Local footy competition to trial four umpires in weekend’s preliminary finals

In what is likely a local footy first, a metro league will trial having four umpires in a game during preliminary finals with a view to next week’s grand finals.

A Melbourne local footy league will implement a four-umpire trial during this weekend’s preliminary finals.
The Northern Football Netball League will test the AFL-level system during Sunday’s Division 1 matches at Preston City Oval.

The league hopes to then use it in the following week’s grand finals.

The AFL has been using four umpires throughout 2023 but it is understood the trial is a first at suburban level.

Four umpires will officiate the under-19s, reserve grade and senior preliminary finals, with a place on the grand final up for grabs.

NFNL head of umpiring Martin Ellis said the league was keen to be innovative.

“We have to start someone and we thought Division 1 was a good place to start,” Ellis said.

“We’ve canvassed some of the umpires who will be affected and received overwhelming support, over 90 per cent were willing to give it a go.

“As part of my role as head of umpiring this year, one of the key job attributes was being progressive and innovating in the umpiring space.

“In consultation with footy ops and the CEO, we had a discussion about what can we do, what can we do different and it would be great to get the four-umpire system up and running.

“We discussed the benefits and did we have to wait for another league to do it, let’s get on the first foot and be innovative.

“During the NFNL finals the league is responsible for umpiring fees, so we can invest in umpiring further, so we’re going to trial it and see how it works and not compromise umpire pay.”

Preliminary finals are considered arguably the hardest matches to win in football.

With stakes so high, mistakes by both players and umpires are magnified.

The majority of home-and-away matches this season were officiated by just two umpires, with three usually assigned to the match of the round.

Every finals match this season has had three umpires in charge.

Ellis is confident the new system will allow for better decision making.

“We’ll be able to control the game better, always have someone at the contest,” he said.

“There won’t be a reliance on other umpires to work as hard to get to position and it will assist on match management during the day.

“We expect there to be a high percentage of correct decision-making as a result.

“It also spreads the love, it will give more umpires an opportunity to umpire marquee appointments, knowing they don’t have to be the quickest on the list but might be strong decision-makers.

“Young umpires on a career pathway, who might be invited down to VFL/AFL, that they’re familiar with what goes on at the next level.”

Asked about opposition from umpires, Ellis said the only concerns were implementing the system at lower levels with umpires that aren’t able to consistent train.

“The only pushback was around how do implement with umpires that don’t attend training, who do we coach and educate those people, but that’s a long way down the track,” he said.

“Every umpire is invaluable whether they attend training or not.”

“I’ll be there all day Sunday reviewing how it all operates and if it goes smoothly, I can’t see why it can’t continue into grand final week.”

Sunday’s matches will feature Bundoora v North Heidelberg in the seniors, Montmorency v North Heidelberg in the reserves and West Preston-Lakeside v Eltham in the under-19s.

Interesting... I heard there was a big push from inside the umpire "space" (lol) to implement 4 boundary umpires for finals to take the heat off the umps that run the most and ensure better quality decision making/positioning etc of course, but they were given a big no from head office as there wasn't the money for that. Now suddenly there's funds to pay for an extra/unnecessary field umpire to ensure the games are well and truly over officiated ???

Hearing Plunkett to coach Mont
I know your intel is usually pretty solid but I’d find it astonishing that less than a week from finishing their campaign, they’ve moved one coach on and replaced him straight away with another.

That would suggest to me that discussions were afoot prior to finals in regards to the suitability of the incumbent, and they’d already identified a replacement.

Most suburban leagues have had 4 boundary umpires in senior finals for years and it's quite valid. 4 field umpires is completely ludicrous at local level and is a recipe for disaster. It was only brought in at AFL level due to the pace of the game so clearly the NFL is on par with AFL? The umpires in the reserves and U19's will spend most of the time standing and doing nothing. Clearly an over reaction to elements of last weeks game??? Hint - leave it as 3 and add an emergency umpire to supervise and watch behind the play.

There is a fair bit of technique in transitioning to a different system and I'm sure the players in the prelim will be wowed by the fact the umpires are going to be spending more time trying not to trip over each other rather than watching for free kicks. Even the AFL waited for the pre season comp to trial it - not middle of the actual finals!

Ellis wants to be innovative and be the first league to trial 4. Give you a tip - other leagues don't do it because it's completely unwarranted. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The spin in the press release is unbelievable - better than "Yes Minister". What's next - 3 umpires in the U9's? 4 goal umpires because nobody else does it? If this is to help develop umpires moving up to higher levels, next step is VFL - who happen to use 3 in their games lol.

“We’ve canvassed some of the umpires who will be affected and received overwhelming support, over 90 per cent were willing to give it a go." BAHAHAH Translated that means "90% of the umpiring group are too scared they'll be ruled out of D1 finals if they say no".

What the concern is that if the trial doesn't work, 12 umpires one week becomes 9 the next and 3 of the top umpires won't get a GF. Other leagues are watching and the credibility has taken a massive dive this week.

Agree , pretty ordinary form by Mont, cant remember seeing any advertising for the job. Maybe wrong but if no advertising and appointed within 4 days is an absolute disgrace.

Again just shows these blokes running clubs have NO IDEA on football related matters the team finished 2nd for god sake. Why are these leaders all about Egos, maybe they are the problem!!!! Maybe the coach didnt agree with the lagging but the egos of leaders did.

This decision to go to 4 field umpires is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard for a while - Why would you trial something in the 2nd most important game of the year?

Even if they can find 4 umpires who are half decent for the 1's (but will probably over umpire as they have never worked in a 4 umpire system before), imagine what they'll be putting out there for the 2's and 19's...
