I’m only a casual observer of the NFNL, as I’m involved with the OPs, but wasn’t Epping going to be a laughing stock ? The comments on here suggested they would really struggle. They still might I guess, but a round 1 victory would put a smile on their dial.

fitzroy blew a 5-6 goal lead

besides that tho beating the stars is nothing exciting, but may prove the difference between staying up or going down as they will both be bottom 2 so a big round one result would’ve been a win for either side

Any match reports?

Was up on the hill where it did not stop raining all game. Made it tough to get a decent gauge. Panton Hill threw everything at Eltham but could not bridge the gap. Panthers goal kicking was not awesome and kept the Hillers in the game but kicked away in the last.

If they do not lose players to injury Panton Hill will get a few wins, especially at home, they looked to have not much in their reserves capable of moving up but they will get some good wins.

Panthers young after the off season of outs. Few injuries to come back after Easter I think. Goal kicking practice needs to be looked at.

Must say, I thought the umpiring was actually OK (considering all but 1 did both games) other than the 7 deliberate out of bounds. This is Div 2 footy in teaming rain, I think the Umps need to understand that it may be OK in AFL but skills and conditions need to be taken into account. Was a few that were clearly just under pressure clearances that came off the boot slightly and could not be called deliberate.

We are in desperate need of umpires and I hope they find them, poor blokes running around for 2 games in the rain is not perfect. Seems to be a state wide issue, hope the AFL can find an answer.

Overall, love heading up the Hill, great people up there (sh*t parking but that's not the Clubs fault) just need a pathway to get 19s (which they tried and were close this year I was told) and they will only grow.

Denny Cranes Hot Dog score, sorry, was a 7.5/10 - Rolls make the Hot Dog and this was fresh but not perfect. Mustard was OK but sauce was a tad sweet and runny for me. Good and would have another but I am very picky on my dogs. (stay tuned for DC Hot Dog Score at every Panther away games...or not, I don't care if you read or not, I just love footy hot dogs)

Denny Cranes Beer Score - You cannot f#ck beer unless its hot but PH have $4 icey cold Great Northerns which is f#ckin excellent. All I would say is maybe move spectators from entrance (just a small gap) so you can get through and order one.

Cannot wait until round 2. Hope you all enjoyed is as well.

Yep I really feel for the umpires who are their and being thrown even more games. I’ve had a few chats with them and the burden is getting to a lot of them.

The pays not good enough.

Less than $100 to run boundary and goal umpire it’s just not enough. Don’t work out an “hourly” Most blokes only want to do 1 game and have their Saturday off.

Imo double all umpire pays. Raise the fees and have the clubs foot the bill. Spend less on players and more getting quality umpires imo. Hell even charge players $5/10 a game and raise the money that way.

How many would come out of retirement if you got $300 to do a single game?

Fantastic win for Watsonia. That’s a good win for a division 1 club beating lower at home.

From all reports lower seriously struggling for numbers in the magoos, maybe not their year?

The pressure and tackling from Watsonia was outstanding. Add on the run off half back and crafty forwards and they looked super dangerous. Stopped Lower completely. They were all over them. Deserving winners , was in front most of the day besides little lapses at the end of the 2nd and 3rd quarter.

On a bigger ground could see them beating them again , even by more. Lower looked slow, sluggish and looked like they didn’t wanna win the hard ball. Was wierd to see. Thought they Played Barden completely wrong, and Turner had no real effect on the game.

Big ups to Watsy, the clash against St Marys this week i think will be another good hard close game for both sides. Can’t wait!

Cool, I can also find examples from the AFL with 4 fully trained field umpires where mistakes are made.
Firstly, i'm glad you compare divvy 2 to the afl. - we had the vfl ump's in one of our praccy matches and i can assure you they were no near? we even got penalized for not having the six six six or someone in the goal square, one of the players bumped into the umps and it was a free kick against.
Secondly, i've hurt your ego and I'm sorry.
Thirdly, what is your opinion of that bit of play, do you agree with the umpires decision? and if you agree how?
Fourth, if you was playing what would be your response?
all we could do was laugh, "play on".

Hurt my ego? Huh?

It was a ball up, it wasn’t holding the ball. I agree.

My response as a player “they have a free, where’s my man” .

I certainly wouldn’t be losing sleep over it. Umpires in every sport in the world make mistakes and AFL imo is the hardest to officiate in the world.

Stop wasting energy on it.

By the sounds of it the umpiring fraternity are on there last legs and would not want any injuries as there is no back up if any go down sad state of affairs. I see in other leagues on the weekend clubs were supplying there own as none were available

Went down and watched St Mary's v Banyule and the reserves game didn't have boundary umpires, the field umpire ended up umpiring both reserves and seniors games. The league really needs to consider giving them more than $100 a game as this will only get worse as the season goes on

Well said, totally agree it was a ball up, but they have to be consistent.

They went through a pay cut last year i think and should've gone up again this year, they deserve way more, hard gig.

2/5 in round 1 missing on Diamond Creek, Watsonia and Epping.

Biggest winner of the round: Going with Watsonia who had a great win over the Lower Bears at Lower. Coming from 9 points down at 3 quarter time to win by 3 points is a huge start for the Saints. Can they make it 2-0.
Honourable mention to both Epping and Diamo.
Epping has had doom and gloom all pre-season but to have a win in first game on back of a 7 goal to 3 second half will give them great belief to try and avoid relegation. Long way to go but banking 4 points in round 1 is a positive start.
Diamo also get a HM with a great away win over the Thomo bears

Biggest loser of the round: Have to say Thomo Bears who apart from the last quarter were outplayed by Diamo. Doesn’t get any easier for Thomo who have to travel to Banyule this week, so a 0-2 start is a possibility.

Leading goal kickers
Damon Marcon - Epping - 5
Kyle Wheatley - Watsonia - 5

Marcon played well inside and out, through the mid and fwd.

Come to the Ammos.

Prem C clubs provide boundary umpires in the seniors and full set of umpires in the ressies. Been doing that for years.

Didn't take long.. Senior assistant resigned Monday night & another assistant sacked by the coach during the week...Woweee

I do feel sorry for fitzroy this week who have lower

they are going to cop an absolute pounding it looks like

imagine lower we’re to start 0-2 tho gee that would be ****ed haha!

Round 2 and some very interesting games coming up

Match of the day sees the battle of the bears with Banyule (1st) taking on Thomastown (7th). Banyule blew St marys away last week and look to have carried their form on from 2021. Stanton comes back but they lose Loton. For Thomo, a disappointing round 1 lose they will be looking to make amends as they won’t want to slip to 0-2. A round 2 game with a finals like intensity is what we will see tomorrow and it’s great for footy. Banyule too good and to move to 2-0, winning by 17 points.

Watsonia (5th) take on st marys (10th) at their new home ground Binnak park. The saints coming off a great win over Lower will look to make it 2-0 for season 2022. The Saints will be looking for consistency and this is a big game for them. St Marys would be disappointed with their first round effort against Banyule. For me this is a toss if the coin, but will go with winning form. Saints by 13 points.

Epping (3rd) take on Panton Hill (9th) and will be looking to make it 2 in a row which would be a fantastic start for the pingers. Not many expected them to win last week and to come from behind to beat Fitzroy would give them a lot of confidence. The redbacks pushed Eltham who kicked terribly and could have won by a much bigger margin. Again another toss of the coin, but will back Panton Hill to open their 2022 account. Redbacks by 19 points.

Lower Plenty (6th) take on Fitzroy Stars (8th) both with round 1 losses, the Lower bears will be looking to take out their frustration on the stars. Lower don’t lose too many games at para rd and will be looking to get back to 1-1. The stars missed a great opportunity to open their account last week when leading Epping at half time. I can’t see it getting any easier against Lower. Lower by 53 points

Enjoy the footy
