Can someone please explain to me how reservoir have 50 points yet west Heidelberg who haven’t played finals for 30 years is on the same points as clubs such as Laurimar & Mernda? The league is a joke.
Reservoir played above 40 points twice. Most weeks mid 30s.

They had close games with Ivanhoe, West and Lalor. Not getting thrashed every week.

How the league has gone for this is crazy.

Their 7 point loss to Ivanhoe team is now 28 points… so you could bring in plenty of players to improve without getting a massive advantage.

28…

5 Greenwood - 32
5 Edwards - 36
4 Scanlon - 39
3 Sandric - 41
5 Pallazo - 45
2 Cantwell - 46

That’s all players replacing 1 pointers. Is that not enough improvement to allow them to compete?

Few feathers ruffled on here and no one’s won a centre clearance yet.

There is a long way to go before reservoir have any success. They finished bottom and in previous years have been mighty close to closing the doors for good.

New committee have nothing to do with past failures, and thanks to a dedicated crew of people the doors have stayed open and the club is still operating. Remember these people are volunteers.

The comments on here are acting as if reservoir have been given the ability and the funding to go recruit AFL’s current all Australian side.

Everyone just have a breather.

If extra points assist in allowing them to put together a competitive list.. which in turn makes attracting sponsors easier, which makes attracting younger talented players easier in coming seasons, and assists the club in getting off its knees and heading towards long term competitive and sustainable status, then it’s a great result.

And if that means your club doesn’t steamroll them like seasons past, that’s okay, you’ll survive.

If the club just shut its doors and didn’t have the people willing to get onboard and have a good go at it, the comments on here would be about how the league didn’t do enough etc etc.

Everyone’s happy to see a club get a hand to get off the canvas and become competitive again, until they start to think they might become too competitive.. then it’s outrage… and all before round 1

There is getting support for a struggling club and then taking the piss with extra points to recruit for the 'now' at the expense of others.

So let's get serious about it all for once ..... a bunch of mates who all played at elite level and for massive money have decided they all want to play together for a year. They found a guy to bank roll it and the NFNL have given them the points to do it ..... and none of that encourages youth to join them or build for the future. Why not go after Div 1 twos guys in their 20's who are not getting game IF rebuilding is the aim? This is a short sighted go at trying to win a flag for a bunch of older guys who are all mates. So stop with the BS and let's all just be real.

All it does is screw over other clubs with less points doing the right thing in trying to build a sustainable club.

Other clubs are also doing the hard yards with less points and building slowly, yet now have to deal with the inequity and hand outs given to Ressa.

Play with 46 points and everyone shuts up. Simple. And if the NFNL - who read all of this - don't get on the front foot and LEAD to see what this really is - then don't be surprised if clubs get the shits!

Dyson? What’s he worth.. only playing when no VFL duties but he will be a few more

League HQ are at fault here if they signed off on 50! WITHOUT CONSULTATION OF THE OTHER CLUBS!

Thats simple…but standard with these clowns…

Good on Resa for getting players to the club as they see fit..
For the last probably 10 years Heidelberg have had to play VFL players in the 2s come finals due to points and most likely will again this year.

If it’s good for the gease it’s good for the gander…Resa should be on 46…end of story

This is the outrage I’m referring to.

The handouts you are talking about is 4 extra points.

Of course it helps. But you’ve gone a bit hard with your reaction there.

And are very defensive about the club you support, as a passionate supporter should be. However you have made many assumptions. Based on the good old rumour mill.

If you’ve played a lot of footy in your time, you would realise that twos are twos wherever you go. Div one reserves players .. are still reserve players and still don’t get paid (or get minimal payment) so don’t automatically translate into quality senior players at lower levels.

The players that are in and out of the seniors, are not looking to drop a couple of divisions just so they can play more senior games. Unless they are very much at the back end of their playing days.

It’s very tough to recruit those guys that are in that sweet spot of being a semi regular senior player in a div 1 club. To then go to the bottom dweller div 3 club.

Your above comment, shows what I’m talking about.
It’s all good, until a club looks like they might actually be good, then it’s no longer all good. It’s an outrage.

Once again.. reservoir finished bottom, and have recruited the best they possibly can with the players that are available.

We will have to agree to disagree.

I played a bit and been in footy a long time and I'd suggest good Div 1 twos players in their 20's supports 'building' a club more than a bunch of 35-40 year old mates for a year?

We had two Div 1 guys who were in and out of ones and twos join our club from Heidelberg and finish in the top 5 in the B&F. They now have a few mates interested who can't make the senior team regularly and will be VERY good players in Div 3 seniors - and all around 25 years of age.

Get twos guys from Heidelberg, Boro, Mont, West P, Hursty, etc and many play ones - for money in the seniors in Div 3

Secondly we beat Ressa by 7 points mid way through last year. And they get to add these guys with the help of extra points. Hardly steam rolling or outrage and I'd suggest fair to raise - would you not think?

We do disagree on a few points so there is no reason to be going in circles with that.

However your response was really good.

The 7 point game was an absolute cracker.
However that is by far the closest reservoir got to any side bar lalor and west. It was also in very wet and heavy conditions favouring rezza’s big bodied mids. Was a hell of a game though.

Hopefully becomes the standard not the exception for Rezza to be in those winnable positions and not way off the mark.

I wonder if Lalor and West were also approved extra points or if there was any consideration. Going by league approving Reservoir they would feel shortchanged.

All similar circumstances imo. HW surrounded by premier clubs and no 19s coming through doesn’t make recruitment in the local area any easier and if we are talking long term success of all clubs within div 3 they are probably the most starved.

In 2024:

Lalor average losing margin - 63 points
(Beat Reservoir by 14 points and lost to them by 31, beat kilmore)

West average losing margin - 60 points (beat Reservoir by 24 and 16 points down at 3qt both times, close win against OEC and a solid win against Kinglake)

Reservoir average losing margin - 68 points (nearly beat ivanhoe and west both times, beat Lalor)

All teams should be 46 points, simple

With all this said lets see where Reservoir are in 3 - 4 years. If they are still around well done . If not due to these ' Recruits ' retiring during 2025 or at end of year its another waste of time . Feel sorry for the guys that are in the Twos training all the time and the ' Recruits ' train when they feel like it. If Reservoir dont forfeit a Reserves game this year that will be a sign of what is to come.

Unfortunately I missed that game as was working away that weekend - but have just been told we were lucky to win that one.

Anyway, my thoughts are as previously mentioned and I actually wish Ressa well and all the people working hard to lift the club up. I just think the extra points assistance they have been given is being exploited a little for a short term opportunity, rather than some significant plans for long term sustainability. As such that needs to be rectified by NFNL so other clubs are not unintentionally impacted in a genuine effort to support a club that has been struggling.

That just couldn’t be more false. Countless D1 reserves players have had huge impact in D3.

Marcel Moran (more reserves than seniors at Heidelberg)
Kane Veliou (fringe at Heidelberg)
Liam Rushton Mccoach (pretty much full time division 2 reserves at Eltham)
Mitch Thompson (2 years or more reserves than seniors at whittlesea before moving to Laurimar)

Just to name a few.

I wonder how much effort Reservoir has gone to try and scout players looking for opportunity at clubs like WPL, Thomastown, Northcote Park, Preston Bullants even Brunswick who has 3 vafa teams, Glenroy and northern saints.

Aside from WPL any good reserves fringe player ant those mentioned clubs are 2 pointers and senior players 3. More bang for your buck, sustainable and results may not come overnight but it builds something progressively. Rome wasn’t built in a day!!

Joel Tolli ad Sean Desmond for parade were both huge for Parade.

One of the unheralded stars of our season, and especially finals series played 30 games over 3 years in D1 reserves. A couple of others had played a few senior matches, but the majority in the reserves. If you target the right players, the right people, and importantly, provide a great club environment, they'll do the business and likely stay around.

There are so many stats available these days of games played, what division, best players etc that if you're savvy, you can play a moneyball type game. I've always held that teams with a better "bottom" 6 are the ones that do well. Most teams have their top end and for the most part they're pretty even. If you go and get some solid soldiers to back them up then you're on your way.

As for the Reservior points thing, I wonder if there's a way to put some conditions on it? Maybe a minimum number of 1-2 pointers, or the bonus 4 points must all be 1 pointers or something of that nature.

It is not false that reserve players are similar at all levels.
They don’t get paid or get paid minimum. $50 I think is pretty common at D1 level for reserve guys.

Most … most clubs and there is always a few exceptions, struggle to fill a full reserve list come the middle of the year. And the guys playing purely for the love.. are very similar across all levels.

The players that have all been mentioned are those guys in that sweet spot I was talking about that would be attractive for a D3 club. Right age, in and out of the seniors and would have a big impact at D3.

Like I mentioned, very hard to attract those guys to the bottom dweller if they have no previous tie to the club.

Easier if you are in the mix, even easier if that person has a good link to the club somehow.

Reservoir have also targeted these players and have added depth to the list if you look through the careers of some of the guys transferring from templestowe, Bundoora and Eltham.

And those guys that resevoir have added that are those fringe div 1 guys will likely miss for the guys that have come in that are majority 4/5 pointers who will chew the points up pretty quickly therefore those guys won’t be lasting long at Reservoir if they are missing out on games as recruits due to player points. Can’t see scanlon, Edwards, greenwood, Dyson or any of the bundoora/east keilor guys playing twos because they are too many points.

Comes down to the player performing on field doesn’t it.

If you were a fringe player at a higher level, come to a lower level and have the desire and prepare yourself and perform on the field, you don’t get dropped.

That applies everywhere

It's also hard to attract players to your club from Div 4 and 5 Vafa when playing your first year of NFNL season .... with 46 points 😎😎

Just drop them back to 46 this year after significant improvement last year in being competitive (similar to west and Lalor) and a MUCH improved list this year and then ALL clubs are being considered as part of the process.
