Nick Riewoldt, True MVP?

Too true.... milk it! If the umps love u as much as opposition supporters believe, surely they will give you an extra 10-20 secs Nick!

Yeah i totally agree, those shots he missed tonight, he was huffing and puffing. If he had those extra seconds that came 10 years ago, MAYBE, maybe not, he might be able to kick straighter. but who really knows it could just be a biased St Kilda supporters opinion

His kicking from set shots still frustrates me. Misses too many that the greatest CHF's of all time would've made (eg carey). There were three examples in tonight's prelim.

He is a champion but I thought I would raise this criticism at the risk of being flamed :)

Tom Harley made an interesting comment on Riewoldt's goal kicking two weeks ago. He said most people don't realise how spent Riewoldt is by the time he actually gets the ball, how many times he's already presented, or how far he's run from elsewhere on the ground to mark, etc. Harley was of the opinion that this has a lot to do with his inaccuracy.

He has been this good for a long time now. He is obviously my favourite player, but if he wins the premiership this year I think the general football public starts to realise what a great he is and has been over his career. St Kilda have been in the preliminary final 5 of the last 7 years. Even without a premiership I believe that Riewoldt deserves some credit for being clearly the best player on a team that is a perennial top 4 team.

He is a winner, a player that you know as a fan is going to bring his best game every week. The kicking issue is overrated imo, I have never EVER seen a Saints game where Riewoldt has cost us a game with poor kicking for goal. I agree with the posters previous to me who have mentioned the 30 seconds rule and how much it has hurt players like Roo the most; everyone on this board would know from playing football that when you gut run and then take a shot immediately after it affects your ability to kick goals.

Next week I think St Nick finally gets tthe universal aclaime he has deserved for years. He is the player of his generation, you just probably haven't accepted it yet.

+1 to all, except last sentence

Very good player, probably the best mark I have ever seen. Though his kicking for goal particuarly under pressure is abhorrent and that ruins it for me a bit. That being said though, he is a gun and probably in the top 4 or 5 in the comp

Though he also serves goals to his teammates in a regular basis too!

About his kicking for goal, I agree that he would be the absolute best in the competition if it wasn't for this. I get so mad when get misses fairly easy set shots at goal... and then I remember he works his ass off the whole game and he is probably exhausted whenever he tries to kick to goal, even after 20+ seconds of trying to regain his breath. Yet, this is not an excuse, it's his style of play, and he should find a way to improve his kicking to goal skills (I'm afraid the position from which he drops the ball before kicking it is too high and that's why he has some shockers once in a while).

all the praise of CHF's and no Buddy mention?(rieowldts obviously better) but yeah Swan shouldn't have gotten the MVP he has had the best year no doubt but if he didn't play collingwood still would have dominated..

I don't think MVP means if the player did not play the team would be crap. If that was the case Chris Judd would have won it every year he was at Carlton.

Swan well deserves his MVP but I think Reiwoldt when he is in good form is hard to past as the best player in the AFL.

In the end he had 20 disposals and 3 goals . . . good game, but hardly a dominant performance. Only got into the game when StKilda started dominating.

Um, dude?

He was responsible for St Kilda starting to dominate in the 3rd.

Started marking everything in sight and kicking straight. Had about 4 goal assists also. The knock to the head seemed to do it, oddly.

Don't bother arguing with Hodgepodge, he's a ****ing moron.

If he puts in a similar effort to last night on GF day the Saints will get belted. Absolutely belted.

Missed about 4 shots in the first quarter and a half and about 5-6 for the match. Not good enough.

Good performance, but hardly enough to take the MVP off Dane Swan

You say he had 4 goal assists. He actually had just the one.

I understand that we like to go a bit nuts after a high-profile player puts in a good performance, but this is way over the top.

I at no point said that he ought to take the MVP of Swan. Not for this year, at least.

Apologies - wrong term. He was critically involved in about four passages of play in the 3rd that resulted in goals.

What I was disagreeing with was your statement that he only had influence once St Kilda started dominating - he was responsible for swinging the momentum. And that is the reason why people are talking about his performance, it was match-winning.
