It's a fine line. The more they invest in specs, the more it will sacrifice on battery life. Then at which point do you just get rid of the handheld concept all together and just make a console to compete spec wise.

The Switch's battery life is already pretty abysmal, they don't want the form factor to accommodate a decent sized battery. I don't actually think the issues are that much intertwined.

I thought it looked different, A lot of the 'leaks' over the last 2 years indicated it would be a new MK game so fingers crossed.

Anyway poor form from Nintendo not clarifying this already.

Got to wait until the next Nintendo Direct showcase in April to find out more.

I think the reported leak of the Mario Kart 9 'Wheel' looks pretty cool.

I bought it day 1 at retail for ~$450, $700 is absurd.
Yeah really not sure on the finer details but it seems EB Games made out like bandits that day

Got a slight deal as pretty sure it was around $470 on launch the Switch, mine was a lets go pikachu bundle and my memory says it was around $600.

So never say never with Nintendo.

Why do people keep buying underpowered hardware?

$700 would be a bargain compared to some of the lego sets I’ve invested in 😭
Pics or it didn't happen.

Why do people keep buying underpowered hardware?

Cause Nintendo keeps providing many of the most innovative and beloved first party titles and franchises not available on any other platform.

The Mario/Zelda/Metriod/Animal Crossing and Pokemon series will always ensure any Nintendo console will have a massive customer/fan base (the fact they market those games very cleverly media wise also helps)

I am content with my PS5 if I want games with significant power and punch (such as Doom Eternal and other titles) but as an JRPG fan, i like the flexibility of playing brilliant and dynamic games like Octopath Traveller, Dragon's Quest (esp the remakes) and Animal Crossing etc on the Switch, many of which require dozens of hours to finish (in Animal Crossing, a game that can never be clocked in the traditional sense)

Can gladly play my switch and play it a couple of hours whilst watching a dull game of footy (for example)

I think the absolute lowest they’ll go is 3 hours just like the launch model Switch. The fact they’ve gone with what appears to be a 5nm NVIDIA chip instead of cheaping out on an older 8nm chip shows they are focussing on power efficiency and heat.

I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan, I'll always get their hardware. But yeah - you can't release a family friendly console with premium hardware prices and not be close to an equivalent in specs.

Their IP is great but when 90% of playable titles are close to shovelware because multiplatform titles on other systems aren't playable or massively downgraded - cant really expect a family that wouldn't get a system otherwise - close to 1000 bucks.

When handheld systems like Steam Deck, RoG Ally and Legion Go are out, they don't have big aspect that separates them from other platforms anymore.

Sadly suspect that Switch 2 specs are going to be underwhelming along with the price. Can't see it being as successful as the Switch was.
50% of all software sold on switch is third party.

Developers that want to port their games will do so even with the constraints of the hardware. Skyrim and Doom sold well on Switch. Monster Hunter and other Japanese third parties sold very well on Switch. FIFA is in the top charts every year. Even Hogwarts Legacy seems to have sold incredibly well on it despite how it looks compared to the PS5 version.

Of course it doesn’t have many AAA western support nowadays as it’s an 8 year old handled and many western studios were very hesitant to jump on in the first place (their own words) which kind of skews perception of how many third party games it actually gets.

Switch 2 will be the same but with a much closer gap to the other consoles. Even impossible ports will not look like absolutely trash this time around. I don’t expect every game to come, but if the developers think there is a market for it to sell on Switch 2, they will port it.
