Mrs Bertie loves watching Test cricket but, as a convert to all sport by virtue of marriage, knows very little about the rules. After saturation coverage on ABC news last night, she pauses, looks at me and asks, "Aren't you supposed to stay in your crease?"

Out of the mouths of babes!

Personally, didnt like it. Feel its similar to when a bowler attempts to take the wicket of a wandering batsman prior to the delivery and you should give them a warning before attempting a wicket.

That said, its not the reason the poms lost - its just the reason they have now to cry about it.

Batters have been run out at the non-strikers end since at least the 1830s in first-class cricket, and probably earlier in non FC cricket. How much more warning do you need?

Cummins should let him know at the toss

"hey Ben, by the way just so you know, if you leave your crease while batting we're gunna try to stump you. I know, it's f*cking crazy, but that's just how we play"

Poor old Poms have now lost 100percent of their match fee (about 15000 quid each) and at least 6 world championship points.
Luck the captain wasn’t suspended like in the previous rules.

Surely they make up all of those points and then some because of the moral victories and Bazball being far more entertaining than over rates.

I'm not saying that its not been done before, nor if its allowed in the rules. I am saying I don't like it and find it similar to bowlers stumping the non-striker on the way in to bowl.

I also feel that a batter should give the bowler a warning before hitting a six. Only seems fair.

I get where you're coming from Czero..Im in 2 minds about this

Firstly you get taught to stay in your crease from day dot so can understand Carey doing what he did.
But on the other hand he was just off to do some gardening , which every batsmen does, so it seems a bit of a cheap way to get a wicket

Yeah, every batsman does it.

AFTER the ball is dead.

What do we have here...

And that one is 'technically' less out than the Carey one.

Ball settled in the keepers gloves, no further movement from keeper or batsman (deadball, tick). Then he moves and gets stumped.

yeah it comes down to when's the ball dead

he wasn't attempting a run, not attempting anything apart from wandering out of the crease as he believed the ball was dead.
It obviously wasn't and like i say he doesn't have a leg to stand on under the laws of cricket, but not really a fan of the manner of it.

The irony of the whole "you're a bunch of convicts" schtick is that the reason they sent people here in the first place was due to their country having a rigid class system that led to entrenched poverty, little to no opportunity to progress and resultant high levels of crime. About the only thing that's changed in the 200-odd intervening years is that they can't send people here against their will anymore, so the overwhelming majority of the sh*t ones are still there.
