Is Travis Head the most current player to be a man out of his time?
That late 80’s early 90’s with him would have been a different beast

Caught up with highlights this morning. Thought nothing would be funnier than Bairstow as an outfielder getting nowhere near any balls hit in his area, then we got to his batting “innings”. Classic.

Good win, well done Zampa.

“There can be no talk of moral victories this time, only acceptance of an era coming to a sad end as Australia knocked England out of the World Cup.

England suffered the deeply galling experience of being eliminated by their bitter rivals. Not so long ago they would have eaten a target of 287 for breakfast. Now they can barely lift the fork to their mouths.

It says it all that of their six defeats at the World Cup, this was the one when they competed for the longest but a 33-run win for Australia is comfortable in ODI cricket. It is now five consecutive defeats for England and they have been bowled out in each game. This once aggressive, dominant batting line up is cowed and broken.

Ben Stokes shouted “oh no” when he paddled a catch to short fine leg on 64, and put his bat down on the side of the boundary as he walked off to prevent him doing any damage to the dressing room. A World Cup campaign he described as “crap” on Friday was about to get worse and he knew it.”

Rusted, busted, done and dusted. I'm betting the king or whatever will be under pressure to grant honourary citizenship to a couple of Afghan and Bangladesh players, along with any African, New Zealand of Iceland players that might want to sell their souls for a Union Jack.

Aggers was able to find a little positive in the fielding of the team that represents England, however, I contend that the outfield was heavily watered before the match started and balls that were carrying to within a meter of the boundary were plugging and stopping almost dead. Sure, a lot of balls were swept up just inside the rope, but on any other day, or at any other ground (apart from the WACA in 1980 or thereabouts) these balls would have bulleted over the rope on the first bounce. I'm guessing about 20 runs were saved simply from the ball stopping dead on the bounce, and that probably caused two wickets to fall due to players having to adjust to deal with the damp outfield during the first inning.

No aregument with Aggers though. He summed it up well.

Aside from the absolute delight from seeing just an arrogant, self-righteous bunch of knobs (and being an Australian cricket fan, I got used to watching arrogant, self-righteous knobs) get their comeuppance, the analysis of how that comeuppance came about is interesting in itself.

I think Brendon McCullum did a great job as England coach. They'd won 1 Test from 17 when he took over - right after losing a series against West Indies. He managed to get them to believe in themselves by not worrying about winning and losing - just entertain. And he achieved that - England, in Test cricket, are clearly the most entertaining team. But they started winning. Their belief in themselves grew from just being entertaining, to believing that they somehow cracked the Test cricket code. The Bazball cult took off. Anyone who didn't play the way they did were somehow inferior regardless of the result. You win like we win, otherwise is it really a win? Play like we play. We're the better team so only dodgy stuff can beat us. We may have lost, but boy were we entertaining and we played like it should be played - unlike you. So yeah, morally we're better.

England's attitude in this year's Ashes was terrible, and egged on by their sycophantic media. It was very pre-Sandpapergate Australia. We're the best, we play hard, we play the right way, we know the line of fair play and not, we sit in ultimate judgement.

I realise that McCullum doesn't coach the white ball team but his fingerprints are all over this debacle. Warm-up games? What for? Bring Stokes in after no ODIs in over a year? Why not, he's awesome, we're awesome! Play basically the same team that won this 4-years ago? Sure.

Their cricket has been lazy and full of hubris and, like Sandpaper Australia, they got what they deserved. They had two assignments in the last 6 months - regain the Ashes and win the World Cup. Both of which they rocked up to totally unprepared. So FAIL and unmitigated disaster FAIL - great teams might not win all the time but they don't come last. So this isn't a great team.

Long may it last.

Watching India v SA and the crowd is going off at Sharma winning the coin toss. Love it.

About this time last year I went to the India/Zimbabwe T20 at the MCG - otherwise forgettable game but for the 90k atmosphere. Convinced me that going to an India match in India had to be on the bucket list.

Would love India/Pakistan to play a Test at the G one day too.
