The Glenelg info would need more detail to place in context. What were they like before/after him? List quality, player movement, AFL alignment etc.

He might’ve sucked but it needs more info.
Good point. I recall Malcolm Blight, dual AFL premiership coach didn't start out too brightly in his coaching career.

Can only coach the cattle you have as you say.

Plus it's so long ago I'd almost say irrelevant.

Glenelg was a rabble when he took over.

2000 - bottom with 3 wins
2001 - bottom with 3 wins
2002 - bottom with 3 wins

Won 4 and 7 games in his two seasons as coach, then 6 and 10 the two seasons after he left.
So 11 wins in 2 seasons vs 9 in 3 season.

Onward and upward!

We can at least keep in mind this was the conclusion of an investigation conducted by a pretty sizeable team as opposed to a one-on-one coffee date. Does Paul Roos hate us that much to sabotage us by leading the club into signing someone without the ability to coach at the higher level?

Don’t know if assistants running the show is a good description but it certainly seems like it will be a more inclusive with Noble overseeing it all. I thought it was evolving that way anyway.

And a lot of water under the bridge since then. In 2005 he lands at the Crows under Neil Craig in his first full year. They are minor premiers having not got anywhere near the finals in 2004 but balls up a home QF and have to go to Perth in a PF. They are top 4 again in 2006 but stuff up a home PF after leading all day against the Eagles who win the flag. They fall back in 2007 and are eliminated by Franklin in the first week. They're 5th in '08 but mess up another home final against the Pies, and 5th again in 2009 where they thrash * in the first week (like everyone does) but get pipped in a semi by the Pies (right in front of me!!). In 2010-11 they fall away, a new coach comes in (Sanderson) and they immediate contend again - 2nd in the H&A but again stuff up a home QF and lose an away PF by a couple of points. They don't anywhere near it in 2013-14 but win a final in 2015 - not a bad feat given the tragedy of Phil Walsh.

A team of players coached by Noble from the NSW/ACT Rams (1996-97), Western Bulldogs (1998-2002), Glenelg (2003-04), Adelaide (2005-16), Brisbane Lions (2017-2020)

It's the evolution of coaching which has been happening for quite some time now. The coach is more of a figurehead or man manager who although ultimately gets the final say, its actually the assistant line coaches that are the ones making the tactical and strategic moves. Kevin Sheedy at GWS was one of the first to be utilized in such a manner, and Roos at Melbourne as well as Worsfold at * were two that followed down a similar path.

The most successful one as proof the model works is Fagen at Brisbane..

I'd say that Neil Craig at the Crows was the first 'manager' style coach. Then Sheedy although he was more a marketing figurehead. Then Fagan. It's interesting that Noble has worked with Craig and Fagan.

Presser will be fascinating.

The Noble appointment gives the Brown trade a new interesting angle.

Considering how Brisbane play Hipwood, would it be safe to assume that Noble would have seen a place for Ben in North's 2021 forward line?

I think that's the case.

Who knows how the draft plays out but if the Roos select Thilthorpe or McDonald I suspect they'd be happy to get him in early to build the forward line of the future.

You're another one in the "major rebuild" camp mate?
