Opinion No more flakey flankers

Rendell was on SEN for about 15 minutes, wouldn't shut up when they tried to cut him off to go to the news.

He named names of who was too soft as well as who they were expecting to carry the load of the tough stuff.

He said yesterday he wrote down his best Port 22 for 2022, he didn't know Hartlett was cut and he said he had Hartlett and Jones on the HBF and SPP in the middle. He had a couple of shock omissions - flakey flanker types, but just can't remember who.

He said PF are just about the hardest game of the year to win and you can't afford to have soft players. He said you need players that are physically tough to win a PF, Port probably have too many of them who aren't, and listed some of the older tougher guys who the rest expected them to do it. Rucci was very quiet and hardly said anything in the 15 minutes.

Talks about a lot of them having to have a big preseason in the gym. talks about the players are there but the mix is wrong. Last 2 minutes talks about the coach, says he stays, but they stuffed it up, and they have a few tough nuts in the coaching group - but doesn't mention Ken or Schoey.

I was reading a post I made when he was talking about these players and happened to read the first line of my signature, which I haven't changed for 4 years and basically ignore these days - We need big bodied, big arsed warriors with a healthy dose of mongrel, who are ruthless and brave.

The line I quoted above, I wrote in 2012 and added the last 5 words in mid to late 2013 when Hinkley had many times talked about players had to be ruthless and brave. I thought to myself, this is what Matt Rendell is talking about.

But its become a lot of talk. Ken is now more concerned about meeting Johnny Howard's 1996 mantra of being relaxed and comfortable, than ruthless and brave.

The problem is, we lose that stat and we lose the game. And looks who we have to beat to win a flag...
Yes but that is because we are so inefficient going forwards when we do win it. Other teams get quick entries to functioning forward lines and take advantage of the 666.

Players that were in the centre square at SANFL level this season, and what primary positions they played when in the AFL side.

Rockliff - Sub then retired.
SPP - Forward flank.
Mayes - Forward flank.
Butters - Half forward.
Duursma - Wing.
Bergman - Half back.
Hartlett - Half back then retired.
Woodcock - Forward pocket.
Williams - Forward pocket.
McEntee - Sub.
Mead - (Did not play)
Sutcliffe, Corcoran, Appleton, Westbrook (Not AFL listed)

Pretty much a waste of a years development.

Looks like we might have brought a few more into the club since the last post in this thread, and we had almost a full team of them last night.

Cripps and Packer need a rocket up their arse, and if they **** up this trade and draft period with more flakey flankers, they have to be dispatched.

We don't draft proper KPD for years, lucked out with Aliir and Sydney being generous, and then as cover we pick up a 3 knee reco player as depth and a couple of injuries how lack of depth we have.

Stop drafting, and trading picks away for flakey types.

We almost need a bottom 4 finish so we can get at a elite KPF prospect and then they can't possibly balls it up on draft night. That's what we need with Dixon towards the end of his career and the other three talls being more foils for a Dixon type. Get one in the draft then develop the kid properly.

Sad but true.

No gurantee this mob would take a KPP with a top 5 pick.

The worst flakey flanker on our list is Todd Marshall

We had a top 5 pick and we took Rozee over Ben King. Sad that he has done his ACL but still looks more promising.

3 years on from when I started this thread and its the same bullshit flakey flankers who wont and cant deliver in finals.

Pretty, nicely skilled footballers, as Matt Rendell called them on summing up our season after the 2021 PF lose on Footy SA.

3 years on, I stand by what I wrote in post #1

Flakey coach and flakey flankers are not wanted or needed, in ferocious finals.

and post # 26

I’m sky-high on Dawson and think he’ll be the premier recruit of the lot as he graduates up to full-time mid (and we land him), so it’s an unfair example, but I’m on board with the concept as a whole.

So you blame John Howard for all our ills?
