I actually don’t know anymore. He had one fantastic year. Is that enough to class him as a ‘Great waste of talent’? There have been plenty of ‘average’ players have exceptional seasons. Old Jakey boy has certainly wasted the talent he has…but I’m not sure he ever had enough to be a great player anyway.

He’s just shanked one out on the full as I write this. Classic.

I think he has genuine talent- he's just never applied himself enough to improve as a player. If he'd worked his butt off over a preseason, any preseason at either club, he could have achieved a lot more.

Last year he was a big reason for bombers making the 8. He just cant back it up.

Yeah, but even then he was good without being great. I saw an article today that said in the back half of last season he was in the top 5 players in the competition. I suspect Bont, Petracca, Gawn, Wines, Baz, and many more would have been ahead of him. He's rarely played games at essendon to his 2015 level, yet commentators fall over themselves claiming he can turn games. Lots of good players with less talent than him become great players because they work so much harder. He can barely last 5 minutes on ball even when unencumbered by injury. Jake's barrier to being consistently good is above his neck.

He is clearly ‘elite’.

Have to disagree, real good player but nowhere near consistent enough to be even All Australian squad of 40 level. That being said he would be one of the first picked in our team.

The media are a funny bunch. Even if you ignore senile Malthouses ridiculous premiership prediction you would find the majority of pundits had Essendon in the top 8 and more than a few in the top 4. Yet at the half way mark of the season you have channel 7 commentators giving props to Ben Hobbs (nothing against the kid) saying it’s a great sign for Essendon to be getting game time into him. They were suppose to win finals this year! The Saints will flog them next week and then West Coast can knock them off in Perth. Swans and Lions away after that followed by the Suns and Pies. This is amazing.

Also we are a mediocre side at the moment but Curnow and McKay were kicking goals 50m out from the boundary against us yet tonight they are shanking 25m soda’s ffs.

He was ridiculously good that year. Forget stats and goals and just remember the awe you felt when watching him. There was no player in the league doing what he was doing. The talent was absolutely there and he could have become one of the top players in the league. An unfortunate side-effect of having so much raw talent is that one can start to imagine that they don't need to train or apply themselves as much as others. He is also a very dumb human, prone to making bad life decisions and desperately lacking professionalism. I don't think anyone who watched him closely in 2015 could honestly deny his talent though.

I’ve watched him a fair bit this year and he’s still ordinary. Other than Weitering, the Blues KPD stocks are actually worse than ours.

I would never trust him in a big game and the way he plays.
