For a team without any superstars got to give credit to Ratten. They have an exciting game plan and are overachieving with a meh list. 2 out of the last 3 seasons Ratten has shown he a Pretty good coach. if he had our list he would be top 2 and a genuine flag chance.
Max King is just about there - 3 goals per game is elite in this day and age.

Probably been mentioned already but how badly out of shape is Stringer,

love the guy for his contributions to 2016 but he is a disgrace,

has 2 good years 2015 and 2021. gets himself into shape for 2021 when his contract was up for renewal,
signs a lucrative new deal and comes back fat for 2022.

what is he, 28, overweight, now getting 2-4 hamstrings a year, bad broken leg in his past, on a big multi year contract, wowee, he's done a number on Essendon
And I feel not one bit sorry for that flog entity, particularly as that Kent Dodo screwed us over in the deal.

We killed our hand by dangling that he was persona non grata at the club. Had we kept our cards closer to the chest we would have had more leverage.

Geez we’re gonna struggle with Hawks, the pressure they apply and the way they move the ball will cut us up. Going to be interesting - considering we should be a mileeeeee ahead of them.

Reeves looking really good and another example of how important an actual ruckman can be. Another nothing draft pick too - imagine if we at least tried this method of you know, drafting more than 1 every 6 years

They're a decent side, and unfortunately so are GWS if they manage to get their shit together.

We've played all the bad teams, which is why 6-6 is so ****ing disastrous at this stage.

Bottom line, this list and coaching panel/team selection isn't a finals one.

Lewis Young has more than held his own since playing full back at Carlton. He's grown into the role helped by a pretty good defence. Carlton has placed faith in him and he's become an important part in that defence. Good luck to him. Was very good tonight.
While losing Lipinski hurt as he’s clearly a good player, you could understand it given our midfield. Although I would have still tried to find a way to play him on a flank ahead of Scott and McNeil.

But our management of Young is actually unacceptable. He’s a much better player than either Gardner, Cordy or O’Brien. Yet all three are constantly given games that while Young was stuck in the VFL.

Failing to play him, and Lipinski, is shocking list management. Particularly Young as we literally have no one coming through as a key defender. It’s natural to want to back the club in and say losing the likes of Lipinski and Young is no big deal. But they are both AFL standard which is more than you can say for a large portion of teams we have fielded this year.

Agree that we played a big role in giving them the leverage to do it. Just I am happy that the Bummers didn't come out massive winners, in that Jake heeded the lesson and became a model citizen and went on too become a top flight consistently great footballer
I know that is probably a bit petty but stuff them.

Sam‘s likes and dislikes interesting. discussed what great pick ups Young and Lipinski were for Blues and Pies and talked how Young was played out of position and hoth are easily best 22. He is spot on of course and a lot here knew it. Looks like the Bevo mantra Is wearing thin with even dogs aligned media. Hopefully common sense prevails at clubland and the club realises Bevo used by date is years old and his coaching has been on a downward slope since 2016.

and for irony, Bevo played Young over and over (English style) in the back end of 2017 as if it was worth sacrificing the team performance to get games into a 17yo future superstar, then after 2017 he barely played him. i have heard he wasnt the hardest trainer/worker though.

He still isn’t the hardest trainer/worker. Bevo wanted him to train the house down and show Bevo he wanted to keep playing AFL. Young didn’t and then got frustrated and then still didn’t pull the finger out. I like how he plays BUT he doesn’t train hard enough.

Look at it this way. In the professional NFL, there are coaches who train harder than Young & these coaches know they will never play NFL.

The most frustrating part is he would have one bad game, then get banished to the VFL indefinitely. O’Brien has had some shockers this year, and no sign of getting dropped. Same with Cordy until recently.

Now we need to desperately get someone from another club to play the role Young could have done for us.

It’s just bad management and I’d rather call that out as opposed to looking at it through rose coloured glasses pretending Lipinski and Young aren’t better than a fair portion of the guys who have been in our 22 this year. Lipinski is an elite ball user who could have at least be given a go on a forward flank to have his delivery inside 50. That may have been enough to keep him. Instead they play him in the VFL and essentially force him out.

Who cares about training hard though when you perform during a game?

Lipinski couldn’t play on a flank. We tried many times but he wasn’t up to it. Got lost when they had the ball and didn’t provide a good option when we had it. This was due to speed, he just couldn’t play flank.

Literally made a grand final last year but OK.

Coaches.
He also wasn’t performing in the games. Was making the same mistakes and not learning from them.
Never had a chance to learn as he’d be dropped after 1 bad game, unlike Cordy, Gardner and O’Brien who play shockers with little repercussions.

Ultimately Young has been much better than any of those three this year. Those guys can be the best trainers in the world, but it doesn’t matter if you still a below average player come game day.

Lipinski got plenty of opportunities to nail down a flank/wing spot in our team and showed he wasn't quite up to it. He is a nice kick but is poor defensively and slow, and we prioritise good defensive role players in those positions to cover Smith and Treloar who also aren't great defensively (i.e. Roarke Smith, Scott, JJ). He also wasn't going to get a gig as a pure mid for us as he is nowhere near the quality of Bont/Macrae/Libba/Treloar/Dunkley/Smith.

Young is and always has been incredibly poor 1 on 1. He's a good interceptor but was probably the worst kick on our list which limits his value. If you've got significant weaknesses and not training hard then your prospects are limited. He'll play under 50 games for Carlton.

Lipinski was hard done by, a regretful loss. So many turnovers resulted from Young's disposals out of defence. Had he been tried as a deep tall forward and given the opportunities given to a certain deep tall forward with a double-barreled surname, then we might have won last year's premiership.
