Big fan of Ward as a player, but the compensation for him netted us a 200+ gamer that has been a 3xAA and premiership player. We didn't just minimise damage in this instance, we benefited.

Your overall point is a good one though. Address talent needs now before access to it dries up. A couple of best 22 midfielders with our two first rounders this year will do just fine.
Hopefully if we do lose anyone it doesn't end up like 2012 when Melbourne received an extra first round pick for Scully on top of what we got for Ward (and allowed them to allegedly broker a backroom deal for the Giants to not bid on Jack Viney with the top 3 picks, allowing them to instead get him in the 2nd round and pick up superstar Jimmy Toumpas with pick 4).

Gardner is our only player from Tassie.

It should be Tassie Devils. But is there some argy-bargy over patent rights? Anyway tassie people seem pretty creative. Love their basketball team's name the Jack jumpers.

Well played by the AFL with the Tasmanian franchise. They put up a reluctant, dubious front for years then said only if the state/federal governments fund a massive new enclosed stadium (and the Devil knows what else). Fed/state governments folded and the taxpayer not the wealthy AFL foots the bill.

It's certainly handy being the monopoly provider of the most popular sport in the country.

The question that interests me now is how will the AFL get the competition back to an even number? I'm pretty sure they'll want to achieve that.

Unlikely they'll shut an existing team down so I expect there will be another new team somewhere by 2030, making a nice round 20. Could be Canberra but there's no serious momentum or even push for it within Canberra. Anyway the Giants have just signed a 10 year extension to play games at Manuka (admittedly such a deal is no huge obstacle to the wheelers and dealers). It could be a third team in WA or SA. The trouble is if they give one to WA or SA then whichever of the two misses out will be demanding some sort of equality. So maybe Darwin? I lean slightly toward FNQ.
I think that we need another team in Melbourne.

Just for the LOLs.

The Tassie Oysters. Nah they would go into their shell too much.

The Convicts, (nah another argument about prison bars would start up with Collingwood and Port)

The Van Diemans (clash with the Demons)

It has to be the Tasmanian Devils, surely Warner Bros can’t argue with that, it can be shortened informally to the Tassie Devils.

No chance in hell, it’s basically a country town and would struggle to get crowds even as big as Ballarat does.

Joondalup. There’s already HBF stadium (which often hosts preseason derby’s), and they have the presence of a strong footy club already (West Perth Falcons) with adequate facilities that would only require an upgrade rather than full rebuild. Given Freo is south of river, and West Coast is central, it means a Joondalup side can represent the rapidly growing northern part of Perth.

The only other places I see as remotely possible would be Mandurah (1hr from Perth) or Bunbury (2hrs from Perth). Anywhere else outside Perth is too small, and Joondalup is still probably 95% likely to be the choice
That makes more sense.

Who is changing teams?

As a proud Tasmanian, it’s a bit of a weird day for me. There’s too much love the the dogs ingrained in me to change teams but there’s also an immeasurable connection to my home state. I’ll buy a membership and definitely a training singlet. Think they’ll just be my second team every week other than when they play us.

As another proud Tasmanian I think I'll probably change teams. I'll always have a soft spot for the Dogs but I don't have the same connection to Footscray as I have to Tassie.

Chief is already asking people on their board if they want to change their team on their profile.

Most team names reference something powerful or aggressive, be that animal or weather. But when you think about them they’re usually pretty benign. I’m yet to meet anyone that has been seriously injured by a Lion or a Tiger. Both harmless animals. Giants and Demons don’t exist. The Eagles were a great band but didn’t intimidate me at all. Saints are more sinister but the church argues that’s just a minority of bad apples.

For the Tassie team name I’d like to see something genuinely offensive. Something that every time the name is read out people gasp. I’ve got some ideas I’d love to share but I’m worried they might be my last comments on here.
