Man for man, our list bats deeper than theirs now imo and has more talent. Put Hinkley in our coaching group and we push for top 4. Even though I don't rate Hinkley particularly either.

That’s always been Ports problem. Zero depth. They better top 10, ok next 10 but then it’s poor to terrible. Hinkley has no idea how to time the run in the season, so by the time finals come around the depth gets shown up.

Game plan is also based off individual brilliance rather than actual good tactics, so an injured or down player makes a huge difference.

As for Carr, he is part of the problem. I don’t know why Port want him to take over. There won’t be any improvement.

A few Clubs have pointier ends to their lists

Problem with, as you've outlined, is injuries to your better players / key structural players, exposes your list ....this was a key component of our 2024 season as well

Marshall, Dixon, and Houston .....with ???on Butters

Check out Dave Barham's interview on RSN this morning. He's trying to be re-elected as Essendon president. Dripping with mediocrity.

It was quite sad/embarrassing.
Is he aligned to Sheedy?

Unfortunately I can't post more of this article but if you have access it's very much on point and a great read.

Michael Warner: AFL’s hypocrisy in era of identity politics is turning fans against one another

The AFL’s bosses have tied themselves in knots conforming to identity politics, moral grandstanding and radical left ideology, writes Michael Warner. It’s clear a majority of fans have come to resent it.

Only the permanently outraged would have taken offence when an AFL umpire attended a private, post-season “characters of the 2000s” party in an Osama bin Laden mask.
Predictably, it triggered an investigation (and a one-match suspension) at AFL HQ where the game’s administrators have tied themselves in knots conforming to the era of identity politics, moral grandstanding and radical left ideology.

But recent world events and last year’s failed Voice referendum reflect how a growing majority have had enough of progressive lectures and the rise of divisive social agendas and their endless demands.

Persistent Welcome to Country ceremonies, Pride rounds, pre-match knee-dropping and race-baiting doesn’t unite Australians – it creates a growing level of resentment, turning us against each other.
The AFL would do well to follow other corporations in disbanding their DEI department headed by its so-called “executive general manager of inclusion and social policy”.

Football’s capture by the woke movement has always reeked of hypocrisy.
It’s like how the league waved its finger at the Hawks while releasing themselves from future liability during the botched Hawthorn racism probe.

In the year of the Voice they couldn’t bring themselves to reveal that not one but two secret reports had cleared former Hawks officials Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan and Jason Burt of devastating claims of racism.

The two reports went into a lead box and were buried, leaving us all to ponder whether a culture of systemic racism had indeed thrived at Hawthorn during the club’s golden premiership era of 2008-15. The rules of wokeism don’t allow for debate (or even the views in this column), but a growing number of fair-minded Australians know that the nation’s biggest sport has been an active participant in the overreach of the DEI age.

Seems like he's just listed a bunch of stuff he personally doesn't like and claimed (with no evidence) that a "majority of fans" agree and it's "turning fans against one another"

Given his past book on the AFL I was expecting some sort of evidence/inside scoop showing these things were causing a genuine decline in the popularity of AFL

I think any fan with the power of independent thought would agree with him.

Like I said unfortunately I'm not allowed to post the WHOLE article, there's a lot more to the article.

Comments seem to point to the readers agreeing with him 450 respondents so far.

Key point being he is using SEN to canvas the members to re-elect him.

If only Chapman had to do that during his tenure....

Huh? Anyone who can think for themselves will agree with one dude's opinion?

I don't listen to SEN. The caller on RSN after his interview ripped him apart.

His comments regarding the focus fans have about winning a final, 'we're not just trying to win a final' would just piss off the fans.

Highlighting that they have won 11 games each year for the last 2 years and have brought in Goldstein, McKay and Duursma, good lord..

I had some very interesting discussions this morning with people connected to this process

Suffice to say, there is very much still head butting going on between the old and new regimes

The funny thing is these people won’t cancel the same memberships that took them years to get, ie full AFL membership.

All he is doing is showing his own prejudices.

And one of the comments saying 99% would agree with him. I think not even close.

Oh god, that article is terribly written

He has a very good point re: the AFL’s hypocrisy on social issues, but he can do that without coming across as offended and using populist terms like ‘wokeism’ and ‘radical left’

When I think of the AFL, I certainly see an organization that rejects capitalism and advocates for a redistribution of wealth and power socialism-style 😂

Opinions be like...

Not too many of the now 499 respondents see it that way.
