Brad Crouch with a big FU to Ross the Boss

Saints’ odd Crouch rookie call and the game that could cost $500k

Brad Crouch was St Kilda’s only pick in last week’s rookie draft, yet his AFL career is all but over. So why did the Saints make the move that left fans scratching their heads?

Crouch was delisted by the Saints in their player cuts during the recent player movement period, but was redrafted with the club's only selection in the AFL Rookie Draft.

However, the Herald Sun reports Crouch is likely to retire in the coming days and has already been appointed as a non-playing assistant coach at Noble Park in 2025.
Sad seeing how injuries have killed off his career early and prevented it from reaching the heights it would've otherwise. Still a solid career, but he had all the attributes to be what we hope Draper is going to be in the future.

Will never forget the 1st goal he kicked!

He looked shattered after losing the GF again. Suspect he'll take 6 months off and come back to coaching after that if he feels like he can lose more hair. Coaching landscape could look drastically different come June 2025. Who knows what any of Adelaide, Port, Essendon, St Kilda offer up in the first half of the year. And there's Tassie on the way although I'm still hearing that one's going to Bucks.

He will have the choice of a few clubs. With his record he is the type of coach that clubs will sack their coach to create the vacancy.

Carr will take over at Port and I doubt Longmire would come to us.

I don't think he would take over a bottom club in full rebuild mode so he might be a good fit for for a Carlton, Bulldogs or Essendon if things don't go well in 2025.

Well if Nicks doesn’t make the finals next year, at least there’s a potentially good replacement option (assuming Longmire isn’t totally burnt out)
Look, I was waiting for this ...getting Longmire to Crows hope. Everybody knows he's going to Port when Ken is sacked this year before Nicks is sacked, and we'll be looking for a coach when all the good ones are already contracted.

The real tragedy is that he was about 7 games short of father son elibility for us.

Carr will coach Port

I made this account the day we drafted Crouchy. Little did we know, 1 year later, we would snag another one.

I saw Brad as the future and while there were great moments, ultimately it didn't pan out.

Sad to see him retire earlier than expected but you gotta put your long term health above all. Hope he lands a good post career.

It's Geelong, not suprised there's dodgy property deals involved!

Longmire won't coach again, going into an Exec position at the Swans. Anyway, we have our next Premiership coach about to start his two year contract.

The article doesn't explain why Brad Crouch was rookied.

Was he already contracted for 2025?

Thanks!

I guess they couldn't afford to pay him out in the 2024 cap

Nice to know we're not the only club who jammed themselves out of a list spot

At least they can free it up I guess

I find it humorous all the SA media be like, fair enough John Longmire is quitting 3 GF losses in a row would really get to you and he's been there 14 years so yeah fair enough as supporters you'd probably want to see someone else.

Next minute Ken Hinkley with 4 prelim losses or is it 5, most of those thrashings, he's been there 12 years and you cannot say a bad word about him and deserves to stay put until his contract ends and shouldn't feel forced to leave.

Didn't we hire a coach that had suffered 3 grand final losses with his previous club back in the mid/late 90's?

Cant say a bad word about a coach who has had 5 years, did nothing close to making finals, only thing he has done is pump games into players with non statistical shape running roles.

On a side note, the timing of Longmires departure is suspicious. I hope its not health related, could have just tried to get through the preseason meetings and thought **** it, im out. But he is up there with the greatest coaches of the game.

Apparently Swans offered him an extended break until Jan. he went to Europe and on his return didn’t have the fire any more as per SEN y/day.

Those GF losses would keep niggling away all the time. Consciously and subconsciously. Even if top and undefeated going into round 20 next year he - and the competition- would be asking “will this time be different “ come GF day (assuming they make it)

Hard not to have some self doubt after 4 straight GF losses but mainly the last 2. An equitable result in 2016 would see him 2-3 instead of 1-4

It’s harsh but I cant say a coach that lost 4 out of 5 GF a great coach, esp when being absolutely flogged the las 2 (and we’re faves this year)

Caro said it was the right call for Longmire to step aside, saying “something was broken” which led to a Grand Final performance against Brisbane which went “horribly wrong”.

“It was the only decision John Longmire could make,” she said on Wide World of Sports.

“It almost became untenable for him to go on after that performance in the Grand Final.”

But her and her mates will defend Ken Hinkley to the death.
