I agree with danger - make the games shorter but play more of them, so each team plays the other twice (I'm sure he didn't want the last bit)
I don't, they have a 5 man bench which includes the tactical sub, will they have their salaries reduced pro-rata to the minutes played.

Geelong captain and AFL Players Association president Patrick Dangerfield has declared it’s “time to shorten” quarters, adamant that record ratings and attendances wouldn’t be impacted by saying “reduce the supply and the demand goes up”.
Danger wants us to return to covid quarters... no thanks!

If he can't run out games, then play more up forward, rest from some games or retire.

The game does not revolve around an aging Dangerfield.

We usually have a better season when the Victorians are not rating us...
The Vic media is just selling papers and beholden to the whims of the AFL.

We'll have a better season when WE rate ourselves worthy. So far its all just been fluff and potential. Like a rainbow (looks awesome but not made of anything of substance. An illusion)

Being 8 and 3 at the mid point this season might be all we need to kick start a golden era. Momentum builds belief. Belief builds confidence. Confidence builds good form. Good form wins games and games and games...

We rated ourselves last preseason (remuneration Olsen's speech) & most AFL media had us as the big movers up the ladder.

Not so much this year.

Actually was on radio today (SEN I think) that NBA CEO Silver was discussing whether they also drop quarters to 10 minutes (from 12 currently) for TV viewing purposes. NBA audiences are way down this year
Because it's turned into a perimeter game

I'm unsure how much the players rated themselves last year. But probably they had some level of belief. The public broadcasting from the club however was clearly ahead of the reality. It's as if the players and coaches didn't truly believe in their ability yet.

Several decades ago I worked in an area where motivation and belief mattered greatly. I listened at a conference once to a guy I only ever thought of as a bit of a knob. But it was just the TV persona and media painting of the guy. Lawry Lawrence is best remembered for acting the goat when Duncan Armstrong stunned the world (and himself) when he won gold at the Olympics from an outside lane. We all had our opinion from then on.

However Lawry spoke at this conference and was a remarkable speaker. I was won over by his thought process and most of his methods as a coach. I bought his book and still own it today (Lawrence of Australia). In it he cites a ladder to success and I've used it myself ever since.

I wonder how far up this ladder each individual player at AFC is? I wonder how far up they are as a cohesive team? I wonder where Nicks might see himself. I'll leave you with a genuine nugget good coaches (in any field of endeavour) know instinctively. Getting this firmly lodged into each player is the job. Then just hand the keys over and let the athlete shoot for the stars.

Love the title of his book

Um, no, Patrick. It's not "demand goes up", it's "price (per unit) goes up". Like reducing the number of Tim Tams in a pack.
Is there still 11 in a pack?

I remember that non-divisible number causing a lot of a friction among me and my siblings

You'll be wanting to sign this, then:

That would be the only way I'd be happy with shorter games is if we have games 9 months of the year, Off season is way too long, just enough time for the BBL then back into footy :) ... yes I know will never happen, but I can dream.

Get Bent Paddy.

Show me a graph of AFL player earnings per hour of actual time spent at your job, over the last 30 years (adjust it for inflation if you want, I don't care) and then let's keep trying to justify the need to work less.

Ps still believing Pedlar can make it? Seems hard to see how he is best 25 currently so will need to prove himself in SANFL or wait for an injury to a small forward.
Pedlar's probably the most dissapointing from a "this guy is going to smash it in 2024" perspective. Absolutely went backwards, and then got injured. Cook (well, he went incrementally forwards), Jones, Milera too.

Man, I want to see Cooky come out breathing fire. Just absolute eye of the tiger stuff. Get him a sports psychologist!

Love the NBA but it’s close to overkill with the huge amount of games IMO. Plus finals of up to another 1-2 months after the minor round of 82. Then baseball is double that again…..seriously 160 ish games a year is crazy stuff

MLB is hilarious. Sometimes they play two games in a row back to back against the same team. Games starting at 2 pm weeknights…

No one at the game cares, just there to get in the sun and drink beer.

While I don’t like agreeing with Dangerfield, the game is too long. 3.5 hours to watch a game is madness.

We do need more games though.

I really think we need a longer finals series. Week 1 is great, then it’s 2 games and 2 games before the final. It feels like the entire season runs out of steam. Watching a team win the flag with only 3 games (with 2 breaks) is ridiculous. We need to be watching the best teams play more not less.

I’m not asking for best of 7… but best of 3 straight elimination? 1st v 8th. 2nd v 7th etc. can do H/A/H for higher ranking teams meaning more fans get to see their team.
