I find it interesting that FIGJAM doesn't appear on Nathan Buckley's Wikipedia as a nickname only Bucks. My take he pays some uni student to check it twice a day a remove it if and when it pops up.

I'm a big Nathan Buckley fan these days. Very articulate and knowledgeable.

My position on this is well documented over a couple of years ......when the AFL started getting involved with social causes, I warned that once you open these gates & associate Football with politics, you don't get to handpick the causes you'll champion

OK ...the AFL decide to support causes, worthwhile causes .....because it clouds their monumental support for the gambling $

The Players will now start to associate the causes they want actioned .....and use the sport, nay, hold the sport to ransom ....until they get the AFL to support

Of course zero mention of gambling ......but the recent rejection by the bankrupt diamonds, of sponsorship $$, shows where this is heading .....strap yourself in

Once you open Pandoras Box .....there's no closing the lid again .....very foolish by the AFL

Whereas I have no problem with this. Climate change for example is such a huge issue that I have no problem with players saying I don’t want to support a company that contributes to it.

This goes way back to sports teams touring South Africa during apartheid. They justified it by saying “oh it’s just sport, not politics” - except that helped prop up a regime that disadvantaged more than half the population.

For me, it’s about time sport faced up to these issues - including gambling - and organizations realised they can’t have their cake and eat it too.

Thats ok, you'd expect then that the players will drive their electric cars to interstate games only and will not go on overseas holidays. Give me a spell.

Gambling I agree with.

I would consider that a common fallacy that a person needs to be perfect to raise any criticism on an issue.

Just in time, an article about it - “sportswashing”

And not just sport.

Probably too pragmatic but I disagree.
Not being able to sponsor sports or other events - put money back into the community - will only impact the bottom line of those companies in a positive way. They aren’t fmcg products like cigarettes that have competing brands and want to try and be heard.

Mining companies are not going to be impacted by people taking a stand in this way. You aren’t buying something from Woodside when you purchase a petrol car as opposed to an electric model.

Gambling I do agree with you on - as that is a retail product that has parties competing for your dollar. Mining doesn’t - they make shed loads of money and sharing some back to netball as an example and keeping that sport viable is actually a decent community service

They're not doing it as a community service though - they're using it to "sportswash" their image, planting a more positive image of the company in people's minds.

Why is this important to them? It gives them leverage when things like the MRTT roll around, and they want to put influence the Govt to see things their way. It's a whole lot harder to wield influence when the wider public views you as a leach on society, rather than a company that actively supports the community.

Exactly what the AFL is doing ! .....it's part of managing their image ratings .....the great round focus's on MND and Breast Cancer, fuzzies what they're doing on Gambling

Thing is though, all these causes were started by the Clubs ....not the AFL ....the AFL just decided to latch its caboose for the positive flowback

I agree to an extent re the “sports washing”

My point is the only way to reduce the impact companies - particularly mining - has is to implement policies that discourage the use of their products. We don’t buy anything from Woodside or other mining companies so it won’t impact their fortunes at all - unless change is forced via the consumer

How would you protest BHP sponsorship of our AFLW team? We need the steel, gold and other minerals they mine - even if we don’t want them to mine gas and oil.
Ultimately government policies around the world - generally voted in by the netballers and Freo supporters who are protesting (socially conscious people)- is the way to create change.

It's not about reducing their impact (though that would be a bonus) - it's about reducing their influence.

Exactly. Especially with companies like mining companies who aren’t competing for your dollar, like tobacco companies. So why put their name on it? Why promote their brand? Why not just donate money to sport anonymously and put it in their annual report? Because they’re trying to get the reflected kudos from the sport to sanitize their brand

I would say betting & fast food companies have a bigger negative impact on our community.... & should be banned.

I have no issue with our Australian Cricket captain refusing to participate in advertising for a company he doesn't believe in.

What is MRTT?

People need to see through the fake news of the AFL management.

Betting revenue should be the 1st to go.

2018 was what did it for me

Answered media quite honest rather than the bs shit you see from most club officials

As well as seeing how he went out of his way to console the cheersquad when their banner blew apart on GF day.

Bucks is more suited to the media than coaching imo.
