MLS games have a higher average attendance that NBA and NHL games, and is one of the top 10 soccer leagues in the world, but keep telling yourself soccer isn’t taking off in America.

And that’s the men. On the womens side, the us team is the most successful team in the world and the most popular women’s national team in America.
USA has the population to support many sports.

Its so much more than young talent. Its revenue, sponsorship, participation, government funding, tv rights, media influence.

As the world gets smaller the World Game gets closer.

Soccer has never overtaken any dominant national game anywhere in the world

People flock to supporting the best leagues, they never migrate en masse to a domestic competition

MLS is not taking off. Attendance at NBA etc is determined by stadium size

TV rights is the battleground for America, and it’s well known and acknowledged that Americans will never give their hearts to a second class product

Are you sure for all 226 countries...

But how can a Sport grow in a market like America, or Australia ....if all the best talent is based overseas ?

And that is the problem

A fan can follow multiple sports around the world through to its best leagues

Just because someone supports Chelsea or Liverpool it doesn’t mean they’ll follow an inferior domestic product.

This is the same demented logic that led us to invest in e-sports and baseball

There are 3 soccer mad guys at my work, all closely follow an EPL club, they discuss all things EPL like we do with footy.

They have never and would never even contemplate attending an A-League game.

That is why soccer in Australia will never be the dominate sport

Die hard soccer fans won't invest time and money following a mickey mouse competition here in Australia.

Exactly!

They’ll support the EPL because it’s the best and the players are the best. They’ll follow the intrigue of the rivalries and transfer windows, they’ll watch or stream games.

And they might, sometimes, for shots and giggles go see a local game

There were 3 million applications for tickets to the recent NFL game in Munich, these people don’t care about the Bavarian Barons or whatever their local team might be called. They want to watch the Dallas Cowboys

Again. Confusing a league with a sport.

The only thing I’ll say is there is a lot of kids playing soccer in Australia and it’s growing. Soccer will never take over as the number one sport in Australia but it will help diminish the talent pool of juniors playing footy

Yep, this is me.

Have been to a couple of Adelaide United games over the past few years, but no desire to go back. I have been spoilt by the atmosphere at places like Elland Road, La Bombanera & River Plate, the lack of passion and noise at Hindmarsh contributes to the lack of a quality product.

There are some decent players in the A-League, but the lure of the $ in places like SE Asia and the Middle East will always take quality away. There is no fix, we simply do not have the population to support a decent national competition.

And sticking the coverage on Paramount instead of SBS is a shocking strategy - the lack of free to air exposure will eventually kill the game in this country. Cricket is suffering a similar fate.

Soccer was the no.1 participation sport in Australia in the 1970’s

This is a very slow burn

This. There is next to no promotion of the A-League now with the majority of games on a platform next to no one has (though Paramount’s recent deal of half price for 12 months may get a few more subscribers).

Have a look at Adelaide United last season. The entire eastern side of the ground was closed off as part of the upgrade works going on at Hindmarsh, yet Adelaide United was nowhere near selling out any of their home games.

Did you know that on a total revenue generated per game basis (all sources including gate, TV, advertising/sponsorship), the NFL smashes the MLS by a factor of 30X.

The AFL smashes the A-League by a factor of 10X.

The AFL is just behind MLS in revenue generated per game.

In 2021, the AFL had the 13th highest income of any sports league in the world.

How do I know, Wikipedia told me so: List of professional sports leagues by revenue - Wikipedia

Kids play fifa. They play as PSG. They play NBA. They play as the Lakers.

They buy Messi shirts. It’s cool to have a Messi shirt. It’s cool to have a James NBA jersey.

It’s an added appeal to soccer to kids that AFL doesn’t have.

Yes, and that’s been true since the old Dr. j and magic tv games on the Atari.

Doesn’t amount to anything

Another factor is video games. Soccer and basketball players especially get the kids attention because they play them on their PlayStations. afl can’t compete with this either.
Yep, ive said for years that the AFL should help fund a top tier video game and market that overseas.
Best way to grow the game internationally imo

was a bit miffed the other week when i realised i was actually home and free for once to watch an Adel Utd game , so loaded up kayo only to find they no longer had the A-League streams

no chance of signing up for a separate streaming service purely for a-league

They do?
Don’t think I’ve ever seen one in SA?
James NBA, absolutely.
Crows jumpers? 10 000’s in fact you’d see more crows jumpers interstate than you’d see Messi jumpers in SA.
It may be popular elsewhere but australia it’s not, soccer hasn’t just been around for a few years, it’s been around forever and it’s not taking off now or ever.

Soccer in Australia has been like netball in Australia.

Played in huge numbers at junior level but for whatever reason those kids don't turn into consumers of the sport later on. Just something you play when you're a kid
