Whilst 24 matches were viewed by more than 1 million people, back in 2012 45 matches were viewed by a million people.

Noting Australia's population has increased by 15% over the past decade.

People don't watch as many games now as the quality has reduced with the increased teams.

Most tv shows are now watched by less people via the tradition methods however since those times it doesn’t allow for streaming services via tablets, smartphones etc.

Acknowledge as well that the quality of matches has decreased.

These numbers take into account Kayo streaming.

It's now easier to access games to watch, yet less people are watching as many games.

There are more options like Netflix & other sport streaming services if the quality of the AFL game isn't worth watching.

Grand final ratings down...

Probably because it was an awful match

These guys are gonna be surprised

Nobody calls it gridiron. Ask any American if they are watching the gridiron game and they will not have any idea wtf you are on about.

And a UK based magazine calling itself Gridiron whilst covering the NFL doesn't mean anything.

Now can we get back to discussing the demise of Melbourne Rules Football.

Idiocy like this isn’t your finest moment

They are on a massive decline.

They had a 99 day lockout this year. If trends continue with their massive decline a lockout in 2027 will be disastrous for MLB.

The game is called gridiron, it is played on a gridiron. Canadian football, NFL and XFL all play on a gridiron. The game is gridiron

BTW Ollie Connelly, the analyst behind Gridiron magazine is a former NFL scout and tier 1 commentator / analyst of NFL content.

They are on an entirely different level to the measly MLS

For example the owner of the LA Dodgers just bought Chelsea. The owners of the Boston Red Sox own Liverpool

And just to put things into some real perspective

“Major League Soccer still has a long way to go if it wants to compete with the other sports in America. According to a survey from Sports Betting, the National Football League is the most popular competition in the United States followed by the MLB, NBA, NHL and in fifth place is the MLS.”

No one cares about the fixture, and I doubt the league cares too much about 1 game in possibly the least cared about World Cup in decades
I found it difficult to believe the AFL had deliberately released the fixture at 6am on Sunday, and it seems (assuming those Twitterers were right) that indeed they did not. Seems they released it at the same time they always do, timed for the Sunday papers.

I doubt the league cares too much about 1 game in possibly the least cared about World Cup in decades
"Least cared about World Cup in decades" is perhaps an overstatement - but I don't think that particular "1 game" was at all "least cared about" in Australia.

It's pretty daft to think the AFL was timing its fixture release because of that, though.

Edit: Quite the reverse, in fact. If the AFL was wanting clear air for the fixture release, they would have deliberately avoided Sunday morning.

“Major League Baseball (MLB) is set to surpass its revenue from 2019 this year, in spite of a 99-day lockout that postponed the 2022 season’s start.

During the 2019 season, the last to be played without interruption before the Covid-19 pandemic, the baseball competition generated revenue of US$10.7 billion.”

During the 2019 season, 68.5 million fans attended MLB games, suggesting just over 65 million spectators have attended games this year based on Garden’s estimates.

TV rights up 17%

“If the nearly 100 days of the league-imposed lockout did any damage to the business of baseball, you’d be hard-pressed to find it. The league continued to find new revenues through broadcast, streaming, and sponsorship agreements that coupled with the ability to push ballparks back to their full capacity should push gross revenues to the rarified air of $11 billion in gross revenues.”

Isn't soccer a winter sport?

Why Isn't it played in winter in Australia?

It wouldn't have to compete with the other international sports of cricket and basketball.

It would only be up against a pissant domestic sport, surely the world game wouldn't worry about that sport when its had the best junior participation for the last 30 years.

i could be wrong but i was under the impression A-League moved to summer to line up with the European leagues' transfer windows and stuff to make player movement easier ?

You don't take the NFL head on. Thats stupidity. You do exactly what the MLS is doing. You keep doing growing slowly and piggy back off of having the World Cup in 2026. Once more its a slow burn. The US has been on the right path the past 30 years, Australian soccer has been on the right path since 2005.

But all signs are pointing to the AFL being cherry ripe. No worries about growth. They feel secure in their place in the Australian sporting landscape. No need to release week 1 fixtures when rival codes are playing their biggest game in 20 years.
Soccer in australia will go nowhere until the current junior / club fee structure is changed. It actively stops many people playing or being involved with the game.
I enjoy soccer but it will never be more popular than AFL here imo.
It will probably be more popular than rugby at some point though, similar level to cricket maybe the best that can be hoped for (although with the way cricket is going who knows).
