I have my reservations about there being 19 clubs, but I congratulate Tasmania on getting an AFL team. They sure as hell deserve to exist well ahead of unwanted marketing exercises like GWS and Gold Coast.
This would mean the end of the mid season byes with one team having a bye per round, that’s better for the schedule rather than having smaller rounds in the middle of the season.

North are the popular team for everyone to bash but when you look at how much the AFL is propping teams up it becomes clear the saints are an absolute basket case. That is with having 10k extra members than North & dogs. If that number drops off they are cooked.

Approximate 10-year AFL funding totals (2012-21)

*2021 is estimated

GWS - $203m

Gold Coast - $198m

Brisbane - $160m

St Kilda - $156m

Western Bulldogs - $139m

North Melbourne $134m

That works for the first 19 games but then the last 4 games a couple of teams each have a bye per week.

The more I've sat on it, the more I've come around to the thought of about time for Tasmania getting a team. It's long overdue the AFL shores up that state.

It will be curious to see how the AFL handles expansion. Seeing the concessions given to GWS/GCS were a failure, and tanking has become more prevalent since. So giving Tasmania a bunch of draft picks is just destined to have them at the bottom of the table for a while, and as Gold Coast showed, draft picks mean sweet **** all at a poorly ran shitshow.

The last 4 franchises to be added Fremantle, Port Powah, Gold Coast & GWS have only 1 flag between their combined 77 years of being in existence.

It is very difficult for new clubs to come in and have any type of success, I can't see Tassie being any different.

Player retention more of a concern then the WA and SA based clubs.

I reckon they will use a similar model to the AFLW where they will void some contracts to allow stars to go there. As the player contracts are typically with the AFL instead of the club, if a player agrees to go there, they'll just scrap the contract

Club environment key. Look how much it's changed for Brisbane in the last several years and Adelaide in the last few in terms of players wanting out.

What happened with the bye previously? I'm guessing common sense would be too much to ask for?I don't know if it was a problem or what clubs would actually want but surely for the least impact on finals the last 4 rounds go to the previous years bottom 4 in order or something like that, as they are the least likely to be playing finals?

Or maybe it's better to give the bottom of the ladder the first few round byes or something, whatever is fair.

I just know somehow, we're going to be heading towards finals with a few injuries and tired legs because we had our byes in round 1 and 9 while our opponents are fresh with byes perfectly placed round 10 and 20 or something.

I'm not exactly sure what the clubs would want, but is it something the AFL worked out fairly last time? Or it wasn't really an issue?

That’s what I’m worried about!
Unlikely to be here, as Rankine file suggested. Realised after I posted.

If it somehow stays here though, then, of course the answer is port. Either that or GC or GWS. But nah probably port.

Imagine the club that is excluded. Like the smelly kid not invited to the party. On the other hand, probably have a 20th team in the works soon. There’s already been chatter.

You can understand why the AFL concluded after a world wide search for a new CEO they landed on the guy from the next office.

Imagine the CEO of the NFL or other large national comp arriving here as our new CEO.

"Dang, you'll are telling me you've got 18 teams and 10 of those are based here in little ole Victoria. Tarnation, that has got to change".

Which of the 19 teams will sit out Gather Round in 2027?
Because its Tasmania it could be a "Double Header". ;)

2028 is the target date for the Tasmanian side.

Looks like they're going to market themselves as a defacto state side (ala us in our early days). It won't be easy for them on field early on, but I reckon they'll be packing out the grounds from day 1.

Also, looks like it'll be a fixed roof at the new stadium.

NRL 'expansion' - Hmmm, yeah we'll look at existing markets (Redcliffe), or trying to revive teams that fell away in previous decades (North Sydney)

AFL expansion - Let's look at new markets (Gold Coast, western Sydney/Canberra, Tasmania)

Sounds like a 2nd Melbourne NRL team is being considered. I can see those derbies being huge too.

Funny with the roof. Some are saying definitely, others definitely not. Will blow the budget way out and prob mean an extra 6mths to 1yr.

The way Gil was talking they already think stadium wont be ready by 2028. So on that basis and past experience 2029 is unlikey with a roof.

Nah..

Thats mostly bullshit if you ask me..

Mostnof the players we lost in that 2017-2021 period went to clubs offering them more coin/more years than we could afford to offer or give them. Our salary cap was strained and our later our rebuilding situation changed our needs.

Lever, mclovin, charlie C all went for the massive bags of dollars placed under their noses..

Guys like Keath and greenwood for more money and contract years than we would offer..

We are now attracting players because we have big money on offer..
