Nah. Another s**t year next year, bottom 4 or there abouts.
Around 10th in 2025.
6-8th in 2026.
Not saying we're going to be competing for a flag or anything by then but I think we'll be in the mix for the 8.
I can give you my opinion, in what I would hope is a genuine discussion, but it tends to upset some the locals.

Of course future trades can drastically alter the trajectory of a club, so that’s always the big unknown.

Giving an opinion would probably be preferred to using the laugh react really.

Give your opinion then, I'm under no illusions that the list is not good but 3 years is a long time in football.
If we nail this draft I think we've got the bones of a good team along with what we've already got on the list.
Obviously some holes to fill (number one issue is I still think we need a genuine A-grade midfielder) but we should have a fair bit of cash to spend to fill those spots we're short on after the next couple of drafts.

I agree. Last rebuild I kept hearing it would be at least 5 years away, but we nailed two drafts (08 and 10) and the vets got fit for two seasons and suddenly we were in finals.

I can see it happening again. By the end of next year, our young guys Like Ginbey/Hewett/Hough/Bazzo/Culley etc will have played 30-50 games and be ready to hold down positions on field. If we can trade in some midfield depth this year to help them (ie Robertson) then we will be able to push into the bottom of the 8. Maybe higher if guys like Gov and Yeo magically get over their injuries.

My crystal ball is a bottom 4 finish this year, around 12th next year and finals in 2025 onwards.

Edit: this timeframe is a 5 year rebuild anyway - with us finishing out of finals in 2021,22,23,24

As I’ve said before, I believe your list is currently lacking in A and B graders in the 24 to 30 age group across all three areas of the ground, to see a fast rise back up the ladder.

Even if you nail your next two drafts, you’re going to be so reliant on the kids and second and third year players being your prime movers, especially through the midfield.

Many of your premiership players are old and just about cooked, and/or almost permanently injured and just about cooked.

Reading a lot of the posts here, many members talk about the amount of WAFL quality players currently on the list, that should be delisted, and that’s before you get to the premiership players that will retire in the next two seasons.

That pretty much means your depth is going to be provided by draftees as well. Unless you trade in some quality players, you’re going to so young and inexperienced by 2025.

Look at Gold Coasts and Hawthorn’s age and games played demographics. That will possibly be where you’ll be at in 2025.

I see a lot of parallels with the Lions teams of 2014, 15, 16 and 17.

Your good kids are going to be better than a lot mature bodies you hope will protect them, so you end up playing a lot more kids than you would prefer. And delisting those mature bodies.

This helps fast track their development for when your kids hit their prime at around 24 years of age, but it doesn’t help in the win column while they’re in the 19 to 23 age bracket.

Much like we’re seeing with the Suns now. They have so many high picks and quality kids, but just not enough quality mature players around them.

And we (the Lions) only shot up the ladder because we traded in a lot of in their prime A and B graders.

Cameron, Neale, Lyons, McCarthy, Adams, Hodge. Then Ah Chee, Birchall, Daniher.

And we keep trading in good players, as well as bringing in first round talent through the draft.

I think we will follow a similar path and will see us trading players in as soon as 2024 trade period.

A big difference between us and Brisbane/Hawks/GC is that we haven't already blown our first attempt of a rebuild, so still have mature players around. Guys like:Kelly, Ryan, Darling, Barass, Duggan, Waterman, Cole, Hunt, JJ etc will be there in two seasons when we are ready to move up. I'm sure we'll also pick up a few more cheap role players in the next two off seasons to fill out the list (eg Dev Robinson). We've done OK with that so far with SPS, Hunt and JK (Witherden is also looking like he might come on).

I won't be surprised if some of the fringe players start looking a lot better once the overall team improves as well.

Ahh well, bringing Deven across in the PSD will help with a mature bodied mid at least.
Do agree we've got a massive amount of work to do with the list but I don't think it's quite as dire as you say. Plenty of opportunities for us to improve the list between now and 2026 that don't involve drafting 18 year olds

Comparing our rebuild to Gold Coast’s and Brisbane’s pre Fagan era is rather pointless unless we start having players queuing up to escape the joint.

Why do you think we keep breaking their ankles?

It's for the best

That failed rebuild left us with:

Rockliff (let walk for an end of first round compensation pick 2017).
Beams (traded for 2 late first round picks 2018 & 2019)

That helped accelerate our rebuild under Fagan.

Also:
Zorko
Rich
Andrews
Gardiner (currently out injured)
McStay (let walk for compo pick).
Hipwood
Keays (delisted)
Mathieson (way down depth)

So in 2016 we were in a comparable spot to where you are now.

We then went and traded in 6 best 22, mature players between 2017 and 2019.

I’m genuinely not trying to knock you here, just providing my outside perspective.

And I’m along for the rebuild ride.

IF we cannot draft Livingstone this draft because a Northern expansion club decides to draft Livingstone in the top 40 then you will have a problem until then carry on as far as I'm concerned.

Leave that deed for the Victorian clubs or our trusted friend the Dockers ..

If he proves himself as a genuine KPF and not just a ruck, fair chance we look at him.

Bit of a self own there.

Future trades and the rare instant impact draftee like Judd.
