That failed rebuild left us with:

Rockliff (let walk for an end of first round compensation pick 2017).
Beams (traded for 2 late first round picks 2018 & 2019)

That helped accelerate our rebuild under Fagan.

Also:
Zorko
Rich
Andrews
Gardiner (currently out injured)
McStay (let walk for compo pick).
Hipwood
Keays (delisted)
Mathieson (way down depth)

So in 2016 we were in a comparable spot to where you are now.

We then went and traded in 6 best 22, mature players between 2017 and 2019.

I’m genuinely not trying to knock you here, just providing my outside perspective.

And I’m along for the rebuild ride.
Thanks- I appreciate an outsider perspective, especially from a team that went around the block a few times (so saw what worked and what didnt).

My gut feel is we'll do a bit of a Freo. Jump up for a season or two after the initial 5 years but then stall before we add the last pieces of the puzzle.

Started the Colts season with excellent results one BOG , Eagles may have to use a second round pick but doubt we will .
Decent chance Livingstone forgoes the AFL draft to focus on building a strong career at Perth.

So we’re in a comparable spot to where you were in 2016, and by 2019 Brisbane finished 2nd on the ladder.

Bit of a self own there.
So you’re totally ignoring my post where I listed the 6 mature age players we traded in before 2019, two of whom went on to be AA’s, to add to 6 mature agers already on our list, three of whom also went on to become AA’s.

They were the core of our team, 5 AA’s and 7 good to very good role players.

Add 5 first round draftees. That’s not a whole lot of kids in our team.

The last 5/6 positions in our best 22 have seen a constant rotation of players over the last 5 seasons, up until now, where we now have a settled best 22. 2 are later round draftees from our academy, 2 more traded in players, and another 2 more first round draftees.

What some of you have been talking about is climbing back up the ladder in 2025 on the back of recent draftees, more so than solid core of high end talent already on your list.

I’ve just been trying to show recent history doesn’t really back that type of list build as a quick fix.

This idea that there's a correct way and time needed to rebuild is one of the biggest fallacies in our sport.

The systems designed that you have to go down to get access to elite talent, but how many of the teams that have actually won anything recently spent exteneded periods (5+ years) down the bottom?

Melbourne's the only team that comes to mind but to suggest that there's only one way or recipe for success is just not backed by evidence.

If only he was offered to us in the Rioli trade and not some no name they were delisting anyway.
Meh, I hope he recovers well from his injury and has a good career, just don't think he's someone we really need.
Particularly at the cost of a decent-ish draft pick in a draft that's looking like being one of the deepest in years.

Did the Tigers not spend an eternity down the bottom before doing something relevant?

Melbourne also did it wrong the first time - few of the Melbourne 2021 squad were relics from the era of Dean Bailey (RIP) and Mark Neeld, when they went extra hard at tanking and bottoming out. Petracca, Angus Brayshaw and Oliver for example were drafted during the time of Paul Roos when they finally realised that playing nothing but kids is disastrous. None of the top pick disasters (eg Watts, Toumpas, Hogan, Scully, Trengove) were playing in 2021.

Hawthorn will be an interesting current case study on whether you can achieve success by cutting hard and rebuilding from the absolute bottom - I guess if they achieve a Grand Final within 5 years more teams will follow them.
