Eddie Betts
:(
Unreal isn't it. It is shameful that a person or peoples have to live their lives having to deal with it daily.

I was exposed to racism very early in my life. Not myself but my cousin. I have indigenous heritage through my great Grandma on my moms side. I do not consider myself indigenous. I am as white as the next person and my dad came out here from Scotland as a young lad and I have more Scot in me than anything else.
I have a cousin who was born on the same day / same year as me. His dad is my moms brother and his mum a first Australian. We basically grew up as brothers and I remember when we went to school the crap he used to get. I used to ask my mum why ? He has dealt with it . I still do not know how but it cuts me up that such a great person who is family has had to cop as much shit as he did . I see Eddie and I think the same. How is it that a great family man like that can be made feel like an outsider in the country he was born .

Kennett (as yet) has not been implicated. Massive campaigner though.
If it was 2013 then Jeff was not there. He stepped aside in 2011 and took over again in 2017. But yes he is a tool.

I know. How resilient is he? Man, I don't think I'd have coped with half of what he's copped. Imagine being made to felt you don't belong in your own country. Shameful.
Yep, loved watching Betts play even more heading him talk. So genuine. Always interesting. Can't imagine it, but he handles it well.

Betts is so tired. So tired of having to speak about this with such regularity and be the 'go-to' point man every time something of this nature comes up.

I cannot blame him one bit.
There is an sad resignation there. It is pretty messed up.

I’m reading Hawks supporters asking for innocence until proven guilty… I mean, it would feel like a genuine, unbiased request if these same *ers had’ve also stood tall in asking for the same due process for Hird and the 34 players who had their characters assassinated through the media for about 4 years. Go * yourselves Hawk supporters (well, a proportion of you), your club might not survive a drawn out saga. Better hope it gets sorted quickly.
Innocent until proven guilty should apply in both situations. FC had Clarkson hung, draw, and quartered which is unprofessional to say the very least. We can only pass judgment after it has played out.

Additional things that have piqued my interest:

1. Broad denials from players. Don't see how it's possible no one knew.

2. Not sure why this story isn't enough. Quarantine this story from a lack of investment in welfare and fans shouting stuff. Silly, boneheadrd and racist as that is, the allegations are not a matter of cultural difference or a misunderstanding or anti social behaviour they are probably allegations of criminal conduct (seriously, maybe work cover should look at this). I'm all for an AFL wide investigation but this is not just another incident and I'm wary even of the way Betts seems to roll it in to everything else.

3. Why has the AFL blindsided North?

Why? Because people are shit.

Honestly, what a load of s**t. It just becomes a race to self flagellate as though that makes any difference.

People are imperfect, stuff is going to be said. It sucks but Taylor Walker is not the last person who is going to make a mistake.

There are allegations that a club was reinstituting the stolen generation and now its a reflection on us?

I'll wear the brutalisation of the permanent displacement of colonialism but not this.

I mustn't have gotten the full text of the ratial tolerance memo because I didn't see any room for separating indigenous guys from their families as being something that was okay.
Bruno, this isn’t about you.

If would be nice if people like yourself and Eddie could stop just being absolute campaigners for one day even.

Eddie McGuire should probably just be keeping his head down on this one I would've thought.

I'm surprised they wheeled him out for this considering his previous issues with radio comments and collingwood.

Eddie is a racist that's doesnt think he's racist, I'm not surprised at all.

A large part of our problems with racism in this country is people don't even realise it is racism or they are racist.

I listened to about 15mins on SEN where gazey and Andy were saying how bad it was and I was really surprised that they spoke like that. Then they finished the segment by saying clarko and fagan are good people that made a mistake.

Well no these aren't good people they are racist.

We just can't keep passing these things off as a mistake, saying a quick sorry and moving on.

It needs to just not happen. If you make excuses for racists, your racist.

It should, no doubt. I’m not going to be in any other club’s corner though after a fair process was barely given a consideration by the football industry during the saga.

You should probably stop, the hole you’re digging is getting deeper every time you post.

I'm not a big fan of Back One Out at times but he's spot on with this post and the reason I didn't want Clarkson at Essendon.

Caught up on this one very late last night. The allegations are absolutely staggering.

My first instinct is that it can’t be as described….there has to be some nuance or context that we remain unaware of. The behaviour described is so far removed from todays norms that it’s hard to process what we have been told.

Struggling to get my head around it tbh.

TBH my first instinct was no surprise whatsoever and had no trouble believing it verbatim when it came to Clarkson. Fagan’s inclusion is what surprised me, but it doesn’t make me question it.

My office has a lot of interaction with indigenous affairs. We have many Aboriginal staff and sadly, stories like this are not even the worst of it and these stories are coming from some of the most level headed and forgiving people you’ll find.

Corporate psychopaths exist in many high performance management positions. There’s been a number of studies on the matter. They are well trained in saying the correct things to appear empathetic etc because they understand they need to to have that role these days. What it takes to win in elite sport doesn’t require such people as coaches, but there are many who can achieve success as coaches.

When it comes to this story, I look at the various sources, the detail and I try to critically analyse what could possibly be gained from sharing their story if it wasn’t accurate. There is so much detail that can be fact checked, cross referenced and verified. Not just with victims, but with the clinic, email trails, phone records and the police themselves.

I listen to how the Hawthorn players have responded and their language has been to believe the players.

Abuse of power happens a lot. Even if there is some minor details or technicalities that differ from the stories to the truth, I cannot see it shifting it enough to matter. You don’t easily forget something like being told to terminate a pregnancy, leave a partner or remove the SIM from your phone or suddenly move house. Your partner doesn’t easily forget your sudden withdrawal from a family or disappearance from their life. They don’t easily forget members of your club arriving to stand over while you pack and leave.

The independent review didn't interview Fagan. So they either didn't have the scope or the information provided in the ABC article. But it's enough to show the "review" was a similar "review" to the Collingwood one where nobody was satisfied, but "something was done".
The review was with regard to the experiences of Aboriginal players following the allegations made by Cyril, so it wasn't deemed necessary to give it that scope. The findings obviously have precipitated the need for 2.0.

Russell Jackson, the journo, has since said he reached out to Fagan by email and phone to offer right of reply but got no response. One presumes, given the gravity of the allegations, that he offered the same to Clarkson and Burt.
