i know i'd struggle. im nearly 40 and i still don't think i'd take a job outside Vic cos of family.

It's why i don't agree with longer term contracts, unless the AFL starts to allow kids to nominate for a state to play in.
Nah if you want to get into a very well remunerated industry where you might have to live somewhere outside of your home city, deal with it or don’t play. Afl is literally the only sport that has this problem. Listen to Touk Miller talk about it and he has the right attitude that draftees should have. Be thankful to the club that gave you the opportunity, get some life experience and hell if you want to move back home after 8 years fair enough, but 1 or 2 years is a joke. Way too many precious mummies boys that can’t handle living in another state. If I was north I’d drive the hardest bargain for port and make them pay overs if they really want him this year.

People are not all robots. It is not the same for everyone . It is all well and good to say listen to Miller but he is not Miller. You are not living in his shoes.

That's where I think 4 year deals for 1st round picks could help. It allows them to mentally prepare possibly for a longer stint interstate even before they are drafted.

As it stands if you go first round and your team has a bad year you could be mentally cooked and want to go home after 1 year.

Where as if its a 4 year deal you would have more confidence to ride out a bit of a struggle in the first 1 or 2 years.

I think that the current situation should highlight how messed up it is when you hear AFL fans talk about these kids wanting to go and live where their families are. A few of you should pull your head in.

I've been waiting for people to make this point ever since the Clarkson story broke. It seems to me there's only marginal escape from a football club. If you're away from your support network and you struggle to establish a new one (And I'd add, "the club" shouldn't count), then I can see the problems. even the off-season is incredibly long (I'd love a comparison to non Aus sports, it seems to me Aus. sports have off-seasons that are much longer). If some of the Hawks players requested a trade for "personal" or "family" reasons, I wonder what the responses would have been.

No doubt it's a tough riddle to solve. but in this case, if Horne-Francis was up front with North before the draft, like Perkins was with non-Victorian clubs, then I struggle to blame him. (I can still blame him for choosing his last name though......)

you could maybe extend entry level contracts for first round picks to 3 years, but if I were AFLPA, I'd be fighting for those same first round picks to become unrestricted free agents after 6 years. (which would hopefully mean we'd see more than 10 actual talented players become free agents each year!)

Some of the s**t being posted about his family is particularly gross.
Yeah that's really not on.

Tbh if my post below is on the money I can't blame the kid. I think there's a young sister involved to? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Please.
Fabian Frances being jailed probably weighed on JHF mind.

Go home and support his mum?

There's a road to the draft podcast last year where JHF was the guest which I listened to, he was looking after his baby sister at the same time as being on the phone. I think she was 1-2 years old sort of thing.

There you go.

Young bloke wanting to go home and look after the family is something I reckon nearly everyone can sympathise with.

Yes people are not robots, but literally all other professional sports people deal with some sort of sacrifice moving to all parts of the world to ply their trade, yet afl players can’t handle living 1 hour away from family.

jeez kennett really is the sheedy of hawthorn - they need to muzzle him pretty fast

Kennett is somehow even worse I'd say. Everyone knows Sheedy is a senile Hird devotee. Kennett is actively making a horrendous situation even worse for the club.

Hawthorn: 'Hey AFL, some really bad shit happened here a while ago but we've got shit sorted now so maybe don't penalise us too harshly'
Kennett: 'What do you mean they let those black people have an opinion? Stop complaining.'

Every sport is different, not every sport has the option of playing down the road from home.

If you're JHF and can do the exact same job in a city where you've got no mates at a shitty place to work, or near home at a decent place to work, earning similar money. What do you choose?
