Random question but I’m curious to know…
Back in 2004 when Buddy was lighting it up in the u18s, were we ever in the running to draft him?
I don’t think we were particularly strong at that stage - he went at pick 5 and we would have had pick 7 or 8 I assume?

A player of that quality from WA - surely we were trying to trade up for him, no?
2005 draft.
We didn’t have a pick until pick 59, I think.
Never in the running.

Crazy to think Buddy was pick 5. Richmond got Deledio at pick 1, Tamblig at Pick 4.
Passed Roughead and Buddy twice.

The upcoming derby...................WC have yet another problem.:p If they happen to jag a win and north melbourne lose all their next games, then WC finish 17th and miss the number one draft pick.

I am torn between wanting to smash them or watching them finish 17th and miss Reid.

Don't be, we want to smash them.

We drafted Benet Copping, Toby Stribling and Daniel Haines.

I wonder where those guys are all now

It was the 2004 draft, man we traded all our picks away (11, 27 & 45) for Josh Carr (& 43). That looks like massive overs to me but I wasn't really watching AFL back then.

That was the era of before pick one priority picks if you were rubbish. We didn't do badly enough that year to be anywhere near him.

We weren't close in 2013 either.

Daniel Haines was delisted by us the same off season too.

We got four seasons from both Josh Carr and Heath Black. Outside of that the off season was a waste of time for us.

It's really grim how much that was so in that era. 2006 a very similar result. Miracle we were competing in 2012-2015 tbh.

Please do not even think about saying a bad word about Bogan Josh Carr and his time(s) at our football club.

Zorko not happy that Touk grabbed his balls;

“It’s interesting, you’re allowed to grab the groin region now and squeeze it and do whatever you want to it,” Zorko said on SENQ Breakfast.

“So that’s an interesting rule that’s been cleared by the AFL.

To me it says, “Zorko has dished a lot out, not good at receiving it”.

Not doubting what happened, but cry me a river Zorko.

Absolutely stuffed the drafts back then.
2001-2008 was pretty meh.

2001 was best ever, 2004 considered second best.

I remember Haines playing a few games for us. Pretty sure he had a decent career back at Peel.

I remember nothing of the other 2.
Stribling was an ultra small midfielder and Copping was a tall (backman) who was very thin. I don't think either actually ended up playing a game for us. but then they were like picks 50 and 70 something.

We had some shocking drafts around that time. For some reason we were obsessed with picking up interstate kids with late picks, as if we'd be able to outsmart clubs who had these kids in their own backyard.

It wasn’t until about 2008 that we began to pay proper respect to the national draft.
Getting Hill Walters and Ballas plus De Boer in the same draft was a turning point.

Bit harsh; the only local WA player to be drafted after those two that did anything AFL wise was Jonathan Griffin. Of non-WA players that were drafted after Toby Stribling (Pick 67), there was Eddie Betts, Josh Gibson and Danyle Pearce. And of course a lot of players that didn't make it.

If I was to pick a point to be critical with respect to that draft, we only left ourselves with picks 59, 67 and 69 after trading nearly our entire deck for Josh Carr. The best West Aussie in hindsight after pick 11 (we never had a pick in range of Buddy) was Mark LeCras at pick 39; pick 27 that we gave for Carr would have done that, and I recall LeCras being though of around that point, but we were not hunting for forwards at the time.

Ah yes. How did that work out? You can never have enough good forwards. Never ever ever.
