I have been thinking about the Finlayson incident - I can't believe players really believe that name-calling and objectification actually puts professional football players off their game, so why do it?
Not that I care, but I still don't know what was said and to whom?! No place for racism, homophobia and whatnot in any form of life, but does feel like a storm in a teacup almost, especially if he just meant it as a sledge and not literally? I don't know

The AFL is using this incidence to make a statement. I'm fine with him being suspended but understand full well that many things get covered up.or swept under the carpet depending on who it is.

Clarko calls a bloke a corksacker and cops a fine.

Finlayson calls a bloke a bundle of sticks and gets three weeks.

Probably safe to say it’s better to say nothing but this is all a bit too AFL in its ill-defined, reactive and selective approach.

We should have had a list of abusive terms with the matching penalty. Set in stone. Published weekly.

A range from “Herbert” (mandatory counselling, no fine, no suspension) to whatever is currently the worst thing you can say.

Intensifiers and adjectives have their own scale.

“You corksacking tuttifruity” bringing more than just “You tuttifruity” but less than “You corksacker” on its own.

“You ****ing idiot, Jordan” = instant loss of four points.

It just depends on who says it

Apparently an NRL player got 4 weeks last year for the same comment Finlayson made.
I’m guessing the AFL were not keen to be seen as softer on this issue than their cross code rival.
Sort of set a precedent they couldn’t really work around.

Why isn't "corksacker" homophobic?

I mean, not many with a cork are against corksacking, but if a bloke called me a corksacker, I wouldn't be thrilled. "Oh yay, I love corksacking!"

Corksacking is not something heterosexual males do a lot of and the imputation that one does it is plainly an accusation of homosexual activity and not a positive and accepting accusation, or else it wouldn't be a slur.

It doesn't get much more homophobic really.

Where am I again?

That's true, but the homophobic element is when you call a man a corksacker - implying that it is an unpleasant or effeminate or otherwise unacceptable activity for a man to do.

Fundamentally, it's plain the speaker intends it as a slur - or else they wouldn't be saying it.

Delving into the semantics is really neither here nor there.

And it's pretty obvious most men who call other men a corksacker are not referencing those brave, beautiful and brilliant women who make a habit of munching dingdong.
