I really thought Cerra would hurt us. But he hasn’t popped in the way I thought he would. Injuries haven’t helped, but but he just isn’t the player he promised.
He had a pretty good year a couple of seasons ago but yeah effectively swapping him for Amiss is a win for us.

Yeah I think Young shows more as a classy inside/outside mid. For a guy that can kick so well he isn’t damaging enough. Pretty happy with Amiss overall.

Right on time for him

I am really really trying to watch and understand the difference with Hawks and us. None of this is ground breaking stuff
1) Two elite kickers in Sicily and Amon is a massive difference out of the backline
2) There is basically no switching. If they cant go fast or a short 45 degree kick, they go long down the line to a contest and back themselves to win. It really doesnt matter how they do it either, just get it down to the next contest whether that's ground or aerial
3) The pressure and speed and running is just ridiculous. Just a constant swarm
4) I can only assume the positioning is some kind telekentic wizardry because somehow someone is always in the right spot for the quick kick.
5) The ability to contest just feels incredible. They have a crazy knack for being clean and feeding out hands to someone

It feels like such an easier way to play and is basically entirely effort based. They are losing on talent at the moment.

And additionally, THE HANDBALLS GO FORWARD. This must make positioning easier or something so that you know where someone is going to be

Watching tonight it is evident that they also use the high handball game. They are just better at it, and know when to kick it, when the handball game has become too hot.

They don't look terrified to bite off the kick.

Someone pulled up an article during the week that was spot on. Our game is similar to GWS but for whatever reason we start going backwards or sideways with handballs under pressure. They go forward, gain metres. This is ENTIRELY coaching and fixable.

They go for their targets too. Last week we’d have players in 15m of space, but we weren’t confident to hit a 30m kick.

Hawks players generally are better by foot than our boys, apart from Young who in our midfield is a legitimately good kick? The rest are all hit and miss. Wasn’t Serong the worst kick inside 50 in the comp last year?

And additionally, THE HANDBALLS GO FORWARD. This must make positioning easier or something so that you know where someone is going to be

Adam Simpson said during the week that when he prepared the Eagles to play Freo they were prepared on the basis that if you put pressure on Freo early they reverted to handballing backwards. He said that it was a feature when they played Ross Lyon's teams towards the end of his tenure and Freo had largely gone away from it last year, but it happened on the weekend

It depends whether the coaching staff can stamp it out. I genuinely think that they now aren't coached into that system but it's one the players revert to when under pressure sometimes, hence why Serong was talking about how they departed from the system they want to play when Geelong put pressure on them early

I hate to say it but one of the big features of 2022 was Brodie's elite forward handball game.

The level of cohesion and connection between the players is crazy good. I noticed that when they are rushing forward there's always a player that hangs a few meters behind the ball carrier in case they get put under pressure. They just know where there teammates are which is a sign of a well drilled team.
