Just watching the Blues-Demons game. Great to see Pickett and Marchbank fit and up and about. Been a while since I've seen either. Marchbank was always gonna be good but it could turn out a great move for Pickett if he can get regular AFL games.

Do these pre-season matches give any indication as to how a club will fare in season proper? I've always thought the players' competitive drive ensure they try to win no matter the stakes, but I wonder if some take it more seriously than others?

I used to get excited if we got a win.
They were few and far between

Now we can get excited when we win games in the real season. In fact, I'll get shitty when we lose games in season proper, such are my high expectations of our side in 2017.

I think it gives more of an indication on individual performances and where individuals are at specifically. I don't think you can get too much of an indication when most teams aren't playing full strength sides and competition points aren't at stake.

Not really. Clubs will use the preseason to try different things/variations and increasingly, to get experience into their depth players. The key thing is to get match fitness into the group and ramp up. The AFL will also use the preseason to trial different rules and interpretations with umps.

Some more notable results...

In 2007 Carlton won the NAB Cup. They finished the regular season second last.
In 2013 Brisbane won the NAB Cup. They finished the regular season in 12th.
In 2015 Brisbane went undefeated in the NAB Challenge. They finished the regular season second last.

You'll often have teams resting the more senior players if they've had some stability in the previous years. West Coast definitely didn't field a full strength team in last week for example. Some of the lower teams also take it more seriously, as a few preseason wins does improve their membership story. But in general the only real things you can take away from it is how rookies and other fringe/not best 22 players go against a decent opponent. Sometimes you can pick up a change in a role for a particular player, but in general there's not wholescale changes to game plans in the preseason.

As everyone is claimed to be "training the house down", these games are the perfect opportunity to see whether the "house" is a five bed four bathroom with extensive living areas or the outdoor dunny converted to an inner-city studio apartment.

What would we do without him?

It's ok, I'll see myself out....
Let me think....

It's not such a bad thing. We'll chalk up our first win against Collingwood this year, and probably give them a few thumpings in the subsequent years following. We all want to see his big, round, red face front and centre when that happens, don't we? :)

Collingwood is taking the game right up to the Bulldogs. Collingwood has a dangerous midfield and will cause many teams headaches.

I don't like either team, but if Collingwood can roll the Dogs, it might burst the bubble of a few of their supporters. I still think Collingwood will fall short, though.
