I guess I am in the minority here but I actually agree with him on this one. He is an executive at a "company" who is enticed to leave before his contract expires and therefore compensation should be given.

I agree Asst Coaches are allowed out with ease and that the unwritten rule is agreed too and they are allowed to leave if it does happen for them.

But in terms of executives such as Coaching Directors I would believe some sort of compensation is warranted. In regards to the hypothetical about Leigh before completely different scenario because he is a Board Member.

Hypothetically If Leppitsch reported to Voss. Voss reported to Leigh on the board. If Voss was enticed to coach then I would probably expect compensation for us. If Leigh does then I wouldn't.

I can see that point of view. But I think that the position of senior coach is effectively the most desired and high profile at a footy club. I also wouldn't be surprised if it is the highest paid at some clubs too.

Even if structurally it is not an executive role, I think in footy terms it is the more sought after role.

Swings and roundabouts. You will benefit from the "don't hold back people in your footy department from career advancement" agreement just as much as you are inconvenienced by it. This is the same Eddie McGuire who poached a senior coach from West Coast mid-contract.

Recurring theme with Ed... sit there and enjoy all the systematic advantages that come with being the biggest club in the land, and throw an absolute tantrum any time Collingwood is inconvenienced.

Eddie jumped the shark this year, and I sense that the majority of people in footy have had enough. Feels like we have entered the twilight of his presidency as the Buckley experiment unravels, and Ed isn't going to go down quietly.

While at times he is that way definitely, to be fair though he did say his reasoning is because of the salary cap on Footy Department Spending that is now in place so while almost comparable I think slightly different.

I for one am going to enjoy watching the good ship Collipop go down with Ed clinging to the mast. He has made an enemy of every club north of the Murray due to his selfish attacks over the last 15 odd years. He has no idea of the difficulties facing the northern clubs and obviously doesn't care, just seeing us all as easy targets whilst he's safe in the security of his little Toorak mansion. #FUEd

Malthouse was in the last year of his contract at WC. Not mid contract.
He also had a sick mother and another sick father of Nanette who died when he arrived at Collingwood.
WC granted Malthouse compassion and released him in his last year on the proviso Collingwood paid his contract out.

What you're saying might be true but after all the rubbish you posted during trade period I have a lot of trouble believing you.

More than anything I think it actually hurts Collingwood. They attracted Eade to the footy director role as an experienced ex-senior coach. If I was in the same boat and had an offer from the Pies and a team that hasn't acted like this I'd think I'd choose the other team.

With a cap on footy dept spending etc what would happen if it was a Hawks or someone else spending the full cap who needed to replace Clarko and couldn't afford the compensation demands?

I would totally understand the position if it was to another administrative role or a senior assistant or something but an ex-senior coach looking to take that role up again should be able to just walk into it.

Equally if Eddie hadn't been using his media gig all year to advance the Collingwood agenda at every chance in spite of what's good for the game as a whole my reaction might be different. His sense of entitlement makes you wonder why it isn't the Collingwood Football League.

If the Pies now go and poach a new footy director from another club, they should pass on the cheque. Just as Port did last year when they got a cheque from the saints, then poached Shaun Hart from GC and the cheque got passed on like a draft pick.

I love to hate Ed, like the rest of us - but lets play the ball, not the man. The precedent was set by Port.

IMO, Eddie is fair game given the number of times he has played the man over the years. Besides, it's fun.

The precedent was set well before last year.

Just looking at the top 5 teams lists from last year - You'd think at least 2 maybe 3 of the 5 might drop out of top 4 contention by as early as 2016 (maybe even 2015).

Here is a list of players that will be 30 or over in 2015 (using age at the end of 2015)

  • Hawks (5) - Lake (33), Mitchell (33), Burgoyne (33), Gibson (31), Hodge (31).
  • Swans (5) - Goodes (35), Shaw (34), Pyke (31), McVeigh (30), McGlynn (30).
  • Power (2) - Cornes (32), Schulz (30).
  • Dockers (8) - McPharlin (34), Pavlich (34), Sandilands (33), Crowley (31), Johnson (31), Duffield (30), Mundy (30), Sylvia (30)
  • Cats (9) - Enright (34), Johnson (32), Bartel (32), Kelly (32), Lonergan (31), Mackie (31), McIntosh (31), Rivers (31), Stokes (31).
Looking at that you'd say Port and Sydney (they do desperately need a younger KPD though) are nicely placed for the 2016-18 seasons, especially when you look at the age profile for other key players. The Hawks don't have a huge number, but the players listed is a lot of their cream players that they still rely on in clutch moments. Then there is Geelong and Freo, who IMO have a lot of good foot soldiers, but still will rely on those older players to get them past the first week in the finals.

I'd put in order of lists I'd want for the 2016-2018 seasons as 1 - Port, 2 - Sydney, 3 - Hawks, (big gap IMO) 4 - Geelong and 5 - Freo.

Looking at the other end of the ladder, boy the Saints and Dogs seem well set up for multiple years of tanking now that GC and GWS no longer dominate the top of the draft. It's a bizarre step to take given the "success" of Melbourne and Carlton with so many high picks as well.

The saints are especially paddling the brown river in a barbed wire canoe. Look at their b and f results and the player ages of the guys on top.

1. Nick Riewoldt137
2. Lenny Hayes126
3. Sean Dempster101
4. Leigh Montagna87
5. Luke Delaney80
6. Jack Newnes78
7. David Armitage71
8. Jack Steven67
9. Maverick Weller63
10. James Gwilt62
11. Farren Ray58
12. Luke Dunstan56

I know I am in the minority but I am a little bit bullish (boom boom) on the dogs. Good young midfield, their forward line could work well, but lots of eggs in the Boyd basket and off field they are a shambles, so probably tread water.

The Dogs look set for a tough year, but they really should start to move up the ladder after that.
