Non-Victorians against the Victorian clubs holding back the AFL

Harsh truth, arrogant assertion whatever you wanna call it your club struggles for funds and members. Shape up or ship out for the benefit of Australian Rules Football
North's figures are respectable enough. Their membership beats five other teams, including the entire state of Qld. They made a million dollar profit last year. They also have a decent team who play in front of home crowds not far off 30000. It's not a harsh truth - it's just a stupid assertion...and as a Tasmanian desperate to get the mighty dark green onfield asap to start a glorious quest of smashing the f### out of mainlanders on a regular basis, like the cricket team does, I still don't think we deserve a team ahead of North..we just deserve one regardless, but not at anyone's expense, especially one that has the runs on the board...
North have a spirit (usually) that is never say die, a very long history of battling the odds, they are one of the oldest football clubs on the planet, they are about 25 years older than Collingwood FC.
IMO they add a hell of a lot to the culture of Australian football.

In that case lets heck off melbourne and bring in the Tasmanian Devils. Every club has a history and fans being attached to it. Killing any club will be hard but it will benefit the game long run.

killing off the oldest and founding club of not just the league, but the entire sport, would be a very hard decision with a bigger backlash than you might expect. Morever, while they are reporting losses, they appear to be manageable under the current scheme of things.

I'm still waiting for those who advocate the death of clubs to give me just one good reason as to why it will benefit "the game".

Because its a national game. Increasing the number of clubs again would be damaging the brand and offering lower quality football. Tasmania deserves a team regardless of the population. A whole new Tassie team would get the backing of the whole state. They are a football first state and have had many players make it in the AFL, VFL, WAFL and SANFL it is unfair and bullshit that they dont, but I guess thats the way the V(A)FL ruin our great game.

Backlash? The supporters barely care now why would they care when they are gone.
Their supporters don't have a lot to cheer about, so only the hardcore fans show up. Sure, anyone who waits until they are winning is a bandwagon jumper, but this is true of every club, without exception. Get things right onfield, dispel the many rumours that surround the Dees (tanking, salary cap rorting, drugs...they've had a few over the years), and then you'll see Melbourne right back to were they belong - unquestioned as a member of the AFL. No team outside WC has been free of a business operations controversy since the formation of the national comp (WC instead prefer to hang out with bikers and all of their associated business operations), Melbourne are just the one now in the spotlight...capital punishment is not the answer...

I'm cringing and waiting for the day my boys get busted for I don't yet know what...I'd be very very surprised if they came up squeaky clean...more powder removed from the floor at Hawthorn than the janitor sweeps up at the local Omo washing detergent warehouse...
So 'arrogant assertion' it is. Yes, North struggles financially, and has a lower membership than most. It's made a positive contribution to VFL/AFL for many years, and there is absolutely no need for the AFL to cull North, other than to satisfy the demands of bean counters who don't understand the history, traditions and culture of the game, and would love to see the competition 'rationalised' down to 10 or 12 'franchises'.

I'd say all of the clubs from the football states add a lot to the culture. Even the younger ones from WA and SA uphold the traditions of those areas.

Alright. Fair enough, a team in Tassie would be great. However, why does this mean a traditional Melbourne club which has contributed to the league for ~100 years needs to be culled? How does it benefit?

As long as there are clubs with bigger drawing crowds than others the problem will continue.

It benefits the league in terms of moving it to more of an A rather than V(FL) in perception and also reality. It will move closer to a proportionate representation, it willl move closer to a fairer fixture and travel schedule, it will reward Tasmania for their enormous contribution they have made to Australian Rules Football for over 100 years, It will stop rewarding consistent and ongoing mediocrity as well as getting a seat at the main table just for being there already.
Unfortunately these moves had to be put in place before the introduction of GC and GWS. Too hard now to justify droping a VFL grade AFL club back to the VFL and bring in a fresh Tassie team. Vlad greatest legacy unfortunately.

Again? They fielded a Tasmanian team in the VFL for six or 7 years and it only got a bit of interest despite them doing pretty well. AFL Tasmania decided they were better off building a true state league.

They had the best VFL crowds until the 'management' decided to join with North Melbourne & try to make it Hobart based as the crowds were better. Then they appointed a chap named Darryn Cresswell as coach. The die was well & truly cast for the end of that team. The Tasmanian AFL employees are totally responsible for that fork up.
The decision was then to RESTART the state league. Mind you the same guys presided over the end of the first state league in 2001!!!!!
Another reason not to let them within a bulls roar of running ANY sort of club.
There are not enough players up to the required* standard for 18 teams & you want to make it worse.

By choice, and by draft guidelines as put forward by the AFL. They could easily have done exactly what they did with every other expansion side. And in a couple of years they'll all be twenty...
Every year they now need to find about a dozen new footballers...is that such a stretch...?
