Questions??

Why is it that two days after Victorian Premier Steve Bracks met with NRL Boss David Gallop there was an annoucement that there would be a $16 million dollar State Govt sponsored upgrade to the home of the Melbourne Storm?

Why is it that the following week, Victorian treasury announced that 3 Melbourne ground upgrades valued at $22 million in total were no longer in the budget mix and were 'not up for consideration' until 2008?

Why is Steve Bracks taking an invitation to attend the July conference as a guest of the NRL?

Why has Steve Bracks recently been talking up league so much? The Australian 22/4?

Is the NRL ground upgrade at the expense of AFL?

Why is it that teh AFL upgrade has been on the agenda since July 2005 and rejected whereas the NRL upgrade was only tendered in December 2005 and accepted?

BRACKS IN NRL SLACKS?

Is Victorian Premier Steve Bracks a league lad at heart?

Only this week the Victorian Government rejected a $22 million dollar proposal from the AFL for Government sponsored ground upgrades tendered in July last year. In the same breath they approved a $16 million dollar upgrade of NRL HQ for the Melbourne Storm which have only been tendered in the last 6 months. Hypocracy or an AFL snub.

We'll keep you posted.

Also the home of the Melbourne Victory thank you very much.

Don't worry, the Storm are sharing that ground with Victory. When Storm go broke and NRL crawls back under it's rock it will just be a soccer stadium.

Because the Bracks government thinks that Melbourne can't be seen as the sports capital of the world without decent facilities for all sports.

Who can complain when the AFL already has some of the best infrastructure and facilities of any sport anywhere. And hardly a cent of it is from handouts.

Besides the government already dished out a small amount for the MCG re-development for the Comm Games.

Who cares if the Bracks government is throwing money at the NRL and A-League. God knows they need all the help they can get, because they are going nowhere without it.

The last thing Melbourne, the world's sporting city would want is to go on record as having a failed sporting franchise. That would be extremely damaging to the city and the state's reputation.

I dont think Brack needs to worry about his Geelong Football Club's financial position at the moment.

I thought that Melbourne was the sports capital because of other events such as the Grand Prix, Melb Cup and other races, Australian Open etc.
It also referred to people going to support sports like footy and cricket where massive proportions of the population would go to watch a sports event. It has nothing to do with needing to have massive support for sports like basketball, soccer or rugby. I don;t see sporting cities in contiential europe playing baseball or cricket. Places like Milan are sporting cities and they play one sport.

Bracks doesn't even know the name of the sport correctly. He called it "rugby" instead of "rugby league". (Not a big deal for Victorians, but there is a difference).

Bob Carr didn't even know the rugby league state of origin was between NSW v QLD...

Get out of here with Milan. With 7,000,000 people and only 2 top clubs they rarely fill San Siro and inter usually play to it half empty. The national game there is watching NBA on television. Italy is a cr@ sporting culture - poor horse racing compared to Ireland, UK France, poor rugby, poor everything and pitiful NRL sized attendances at the soccer.

Sporting cities? no way.

It makes sense for Bracks to support the NRL and A-League investing in Melbourne, rather than the AFL which seems to be more interested in spending its TV rights money everywhere except Victoria.

Lol thats why soccer competitions in europe get around €1.8bn for 3 years for their TV rights, cos they got no sporting culture...

Quite simple politics really with Bracks and the ALP chasing votes!

NewsCorp/Herald Sun OWN the Storm and have been bitching for a long time for the Stae government to waste our taxpayers dollars on a useless stadium.
Remember when the AFL wouldnt let the RL play at Telstra/Colional Stadium? and the vicious anti AFL campaign the the HUN started until the AFL caved in??
The ALP are scared that if they dont give into the Murdoch monopoly in Victoria then the Hun will simply run a very negative campaign against Labor in the lead up to this years Nov election.

Lets see after the election how long it takes to build this massive waste of money on something that will be a major white elephant.
I notice the cost is now $ 190 million will be more like $250 millon when finished that is serious money better spent on our schools, roads and hospitals like the rundown Western General at Footscray.

If News Corp think building a s:D:D:D:D new stadium is going to make such a huge difference to thugby in Melbourne then why dont THEY put THEIR money where their mouth is?

Some Victorians are absolutely unbelieveable. You are joking if you honestly believe you are the sporting capital of the world. FFS you can support more than one football code. Out of the Australian Rugby League team, the Australian Wallabies, the Australian test cricket team, and the Australian one-day side, there is one Victorian - Shane Warne.

I can't believe you are having a bitch about the state government trying to support another code. Gee, you would really hope a victorian team might actually play in the AFL GF this year, wouldn't you?

Melbourne is a sports capital but the sporting public are not easily conned by second rate games like RL.
I dont like MY tax money being wasted on a sport that is dying and will NEVER get a foothold in Melbourne!
As I said if its going to such a business success let the Billionaires Murdoch and Lowry pay for it or better still let the NRL and FFA pay for it like the AFL is for Telstra and the MCG

I saw an ad in the paper during the week stating that the NRL State of Origin is coming to Melbourne this year. WTF?????.

There is one pro in that though. If Melbourne drew a crowd of 50,000 (probably a 2% chance of happening, 30,000 is probably at 60% chance happening), then hopefully the AFL sees something out of it considering it will be in our faces for 2 hours of Melbourne's life and State of Origin comes back into the AFL, and Int'l Rules ends as a result if needed to.

There is no Victorion in the Rugby league or union national teams?? Well bugger me, how surprising. Whoda thunk it. Those teams must be full of Tasmanians, South Aussies and West Aussies then.

They only have Shane Warne to be proud of, and he barely scraped into the best three cricketers of the last century. How pitiful ...

The Melbourne storm have been down there for about 9 years and have only had about 1 or 2 victorians playing in their side. Pathetic. Non-AFL states have produced plenty of AA players. I am referring to the fact that people are having a whinge about developing another code in melbourne, yet they consider themselves the "sporting capital of the world".

Yes, they only have Shane Warne to be proud of - there has been bugger all victorians in the australian cricket team in the past decade.

Melbourne can't support any other football code with the dominance of aussie rules. This is the reason the 4th australian rubgy francise wasn't choosen to play out of melbourne. Give the northen states back the state of origin (crazy decision by the NRL - melbourne don't give a sh1t and we want it back) and leave the major rugby tests in Brisbane and Sydney.

Probably because Bracks is getting kick backs from the NRL for promoting the game. Either that or he has been told unless something changes, the Storm have no future.

You've got to be f**king kidding....the proportion of AFL revenue spend in Victoria would be far in excess of the amount actually generated by Victoria.

Mate ONE MONTH ago the ARL announced that over 25,000 tickets had been sold to that game in Melbourne with zero promotion!!! The game is still 2 or so months away... I'm guessing well over 30,000 have been sold now and it will easily sell out.

And Melbourne people say Sydneysiders are arrogant!

I just think the typical Victorian or should I say Melbournite is isolated, sheltered, paranoid and two face. Example with the comments "We are the shiznitz when it comes to "watching sport" but then in the same sentence see the NRL as a threat!! Beats me..if you are going to claim to be the "sporting capiltal of the world" (laughable and only something stupid thick headed Victorians would claim) then that means a tolerance and love of all sports, not just friggen AFL. Remember knuckleheads, afl is only played here. But i suppose in the past 10 years Australians think the world revolves around us.

And plus who said that being the capital of sports watching morons is a good thing? Its like claiming the title of "nation that watches most TV" its just embarrassing and pathetic. If every single person played sport..then yes, but not when 3/4 of slobs watch sport on tv.

People like Ray Hadley don't want the game to succeed in Melbourne...why do you?
