NSW outperforming WA. Time for a WA academy?
There already is an Academy for Fremantle and West Coast, its called the WAFL. Both WA clubs fund it for other AFL clubs to milk talent from except we don't get to bid on the elite players with a shit load of lame late picks.

Does help that they have academies.

Growing the player pool is not good?
IMHO it is a big tick for the academies, established clubs cant expect to have the benefit of father/son OR do you expect a free kick?

Well done to the NSW & Q clubs for doing more to grow the game than plenty of the established clubs with fans who care very little about the game.

Western Australia has been producing some poor results recently in regards to the amount of quality players being drafted. I wonder why that is especially since they are usually a real hotbed for talent.

WA & SA talent has highs & lows & has had for years - go back a couple of years to the underage draft used to set up the expansion clubs, WA trio Jesse Hogan, Jack Martin & Jaeger O'Meara. Plenty of young talent in the system.

I'm not certain on this yet, the swans have at least some local talent but most of the Giants kids come from areas closer to Melbourne than Sydney. Do the the Giants have anyone from Sydney on their list ? I suppose that's the greater west bit.

Thought it was pretty funny that Hopper played for North Ballarat this year.

But was in the Giants academy from age 12-16 before boarding at Ballarat to play TAC cup, and still did some academy stuff last year as well. We'd already laid the foundation and put development into him.

Well we did have Dylan Addison on our list this year before he retired to become our welfare manager. He's from WS originally. We've also had local western Sydney kids play for our NEAFL side this year (including the prelim final) and probably will again next year. Hopefully they'll start to develop enough to draft.

I cannot believe the stupidity that is found within this thread. Yes, the quality of northern state players have matched that of the southern state players this year. But have numbers become a thing of a past? Victoria/WA and SA are producing 3-4x the amount of players to that of their northern counterparts. Hell, northern state players only make up 4% of the AFL playing list, a number that is obviously lost on most of you. If southern states had their own acadamy's, it's clear that northern state clubs would be 'severely' "and i emphasize this word" at a disadvantage. Also, northern state clubs are converting people who should play rugby league into AFL players and anyone who believes that they shouldn't be decently compensated for it is a blind VFL purest who subscribes to Eddie Mcguire's bullshit theory.

All of GWS's picks are from the Riverina.

Hopper from Leeton-Whitton
Kennedy from Collingullie-Glenfield Park
Himmelberg from Mangoplah Cookardinia United-Eastlakes
Flynn from Narrandera.

Is the Riverina club Himmelberg from actually called Mangoplah United-Eastlakes, or did they just screw up saying he was from Mangoplah United, and subsequently "Eastlake" in Canberra?

Are any of those 4 are from the riverina?, which has always been aussie rules territory

Yeah, but can I ask... When was the last time there were 4 kids from the Riverina drafted in a single year?

It's always been Aussie Rules territory, that's true, but it's also been very hit and miss when it comes to the draft. One or two players every couple of years (some great ones, mind, but never really consistent). The academy is putting in a pathway where you should be getting a number of players every year - and we won't be able to take them all, which means they'll be available for everyone.
