Brisbane Lions:

Coming off a dynamic 2nd half Thursday night where they overpowered and outplayed the Bulldogs despite the early loss of veterans Daniel Rich and Dayne Zorko and smashed them by 41 points in Jarrod Berry's 100th game with Bez, the Suitcase, Lachie Neale, Kiddy and Charlie the best players. A great win under the circumstances of those 2 key injuries. With Geelong playing Melbourne Thursday night the Lions can possibly get a chance to go back into the top 2 by the end of the weekend. Coleman's best game for the club and Prior as the sub was outstanding and had an impact.

Essendon Bombers:

A frustrating season to say the least. Older players not performing, lack of pressure, intensity and structure but by god they've unearthed some kids 21 or under who should be a joy to watch in the next 5 years - Hobbs, Martin, D'Ambrosio, Perkins, Cox, Reid, Caldwell and Jones. Played a sensational final quarter to speed home and upset the Swans at the MCG with their younger players showing great maturity and Jake Stringer lighting it up with 2 last quarter goals. Massimo D'Ambrosio will probably get the Rising Star Nomination this week.

Last time they played:

Round 2 this year where at Marvel Stadium, Brisbane overturned a 24-point deficit early against Essendon to clinch a 15.7 (97) to 10.15 (75) win with Lachie Neale having 41 touches, Daniel Rich 29 in defence and the Suitcase #6 kicking 3 goals and 20 touches.

KEY PLAYERS - LIONS

Lachie Neale - surely the Bombers put some time into him
Charlie Cameron - having a great season with 35 goals already
Jarryd Lyons - underrated IMO but is so smart with the ball and is tough at the contest

KEY PLAYERS - BOMBERS

Zach Merrett - the next Captain of Essendon and is coming off a 3 goal 25 disposal game
Peter Wright - will be tough to match up on and like Charlie Cameron has 35 goals this season to date
Mason Redman - provides so much run from the backline and loves to run on and set up scores.

LINEUPS

LIONS - Richy and Zorks obviously OUT - McStay might be expendable to play a slightly smaller forward line.

OUT Zorko (inj), Rich (inj) McStay (omit)
IN Matho (have to reward his form), Cocky and the Fort - Prior in the 22
COCKY as the SUB

BOMBERS - McGrath obviously comes in - the Dons may play 2 rucks so they'll bring 24-25 players over on the plane
OUT Phillips
IN McGrath
GUELFI as the SUB

Selection: If the LIONS KICK STRAIGHT 50 points. If they don't................. it might get too close for comfort!

Go for the jugular game before our tough run home starts, eventually percentage will play a big role in who finishes top two and given our sketchy finals record, two home finals would be crucial.

Nice preview brutus although I don't agree with your ins and outs for us, no way Matho comes in, him Lyons and Neale in the side simply doesn't work. I'd be very surprised if McStay is omitted, only chance Fort comes in is if Hippy gets suspended. Cockatoo hasn't done enough in the reserves to deserve a spot IMO.

Outs- Zorks and Richy.
Ins- Prior and Wilmot.

Some players I’d like to see in the mix this week -

Prior straight into the best 22 for Rich, he can hold his spot on the wing and Ah Chee can move back.

For Zorko, I like all of the following options - Dev, Cockatoo or Lohmann with Wilmot an outside chance to play back and Ah Chee goes back to the wing.

Sometimes you pick players with the focus on the winning now ... sometimes you pick players with an eye to future ... sometimes you pick whatever warm bodies you have that can see lightning and hear thunder and hope they perform better than and empty piece of grass or a Lion's coloured witches hat.

I don't see Matho being picked for either of the first two ... the highest chance would be if Lyons or Neale goes down but even then wouldn't choice two kick in? I like Matho and if he does get a gig somewhere else I will be legitimately pleased for him just like I am for Keays but he is not an upgrade in his position(s) in our side.

What I really want to see is everybody playing in the (or a) position they are legitimately primed for and playing the game a lot more like the day we were eating hot dogs not the one where we were a tasty snack for ravenous demons.

We like learnings - you can learn from last week just as much as the week before especially since I doubt very much the last game played out the way it was supposed to on plan A, B or C ... and wasn't it fun to see it get shaken up a bit!!!!

If I was an AFL player trying to consolidate my spot in any side, I would really like to have versatility to the extent where I can be considered in playing several positions/roles that would give me a better chance of selection....pretty sure most of the current afl draftee's would think the same.

Totally ... but if I am a mid by training and am being played as a HB in the twos to expand my reppetoire but every time I get to play in the seniors I get tossed in as a HF (where naturally I do not shine) and then back to the twos ...

I am suggesting that in that hypothetical case that the player in question should be being played as a mid or a HB when he is on the big stage.

ah chee to play mainly back, kiddie to assume the bulk of rich's usual kicking responsibilities. tunstill holds. dont know how far off gardiner is but payne is playing super well so he holds too

prior in the main team

lohmann in for zorko
Hope Tunstill keeps his spot, was glad to see him get a second game (even though I thought he may not), and did his role.
Kiddy just super at the moment and can definitely take that Rich role. His kicking is not at Rich level yet, but is till penetrating. Offers more with run and carry and support play.
Prior was unlucky to be dropped, and his game the other night was almost as good as his 3 goal game against the Hawkes.
Payne played reasonably well in his two games as a forward, but his last three games against Hawkes, Dees and Dogs playing in the backline has been really good and despite some poster knocking his disposal, his DE is pretty good and will only improve with more exposure and greater confidence.

Would like to see Micheal get a go at sub with Ache starting at HB n being the swingman if someone forward gets injured.

In: Prior, Cockatoo
Out: Zorko, Rich

At first Cockatoo was not my preferred option due to his form (up until this week) in the VFL, but realistically he ran out the game on the weekend really well and if he's finally conditioned for four quarter football, now may be a good time to give him another shot ahead of finals. If he gets an opportunity and is able to make a consistent impact, he'd be a weapon. Of all the VFL players, he's the one that could be a difference maker in finals.

Good game for another debut.
Wilmot or Carter Micheal, whoever is ready.

I dont think our coach's would promote a young kid into the best 22 and play him where he cant forfill the role they need him to. All our best 22 are selected to play their specific role on the day and all are happy to take up the challenge knowing this is an opportunity to go to the next level of footy.
Hypothetically, if I am on the fringe of being promoted, I would be over the moon the play in any position and role in the team.

Yeah Wilmot is probably been just a little bit better defensively so I would give him the nod over Michael.
I like Wilmot a lot but think Michael is better defensively while Wilmot is better in attack. If they are the 2 being considered, I would select Carter.

In terms of a body of work in the VFL, I'd agree. With that said, Wilmot was fantastic offensively and defensively in the VFL this week and was the better player of the two. I did think about this a bit though and think if Rich were to go down for the season, Michael is physically more developed and IMO would expect he'd be more capable to hold up in a high pressure finals environment.

From my viewing albeit on TV and not live I have thought Wilmot has been great defensively, looks strong and smart 1 v 1.

I think Wilmot is strong defensively, but assume Mighty Lions is referring to his work in a defensive zone as opposed to 1v1 defending.

I think Michael is developing nicely but he does still make some terrible errors with his kicking some times.
Particularly with his short kicking.
I really liked the way that Wilmot seemed to know when to take the game on and when to slow it down in this last game, an area where he has really improved recently.

I really want to see Nakia grab an opportunity by the scruff of the neck, because when he does that he's often grabbing opposition midfielders by the scruff of the neck as well, and his impact can be really frightening.

I mean that in the most literal sense though as well, because when I focus on him specfically in general contested play, he genuinely frightens the **** out of opposition players. The look on his face and the way his body moves when he corales and chases and rides tackles is incredible - he for real looks like he's stalking his opponent with these maniacal faces. I'm serious about this go and check it out if you don't believe me.

Anyway point is he can't seem to maintain the rage in that respect but as soon as he gets his engine back up and running I hope that he can because I absolutely live for watching him tear the heart out of a lippy young outside playing opponent, Temple of Doom style.

As you were Jordy.

I think if we were expecting Rich's replacement to be needed for the rest of the season we'd go with an Ah Chee or Prior and give them a chance to gel with the back 6 an their new role. However for just a couple week injury I think it's a great chance to give another young guy a chance.

Really would like to see one of Lohmann or Wilmot brought in, haven't seen too much of the reserves the last few weeks but it sounds like Darcy has been a lot more solid with ball in hand in addition to his moments of breaking the game open. Loved what I saw from Kai in both grades before he got injured, he has that Kozzy Picket energy to him which we don't really get that consistently from our other smalls, has shown the ability to kick a bag himself as well and with time I think he'd become a very dangerous small forward, especially getting the worst oppo defender most weeks.

This is the single greatest Nakia writeup ever. I want him in even more now.

Yep, he’s running into a bit of form. Two of the past three have been is best of the season. How’s the time.
