I'm a worried Bloods Aunt, Swans ruckman out cold at CHB. Stopped the game. Not sure who :(
All OK, walking off with trainers.
Wish we had the player numbers,
#35 but back on ground so no head knock. Phew!

The game's over probably.

Pretty good turnaround after a couple of weeks to come back from a 31 point loss.

I watched first half U19s on my phone. #26 mid and #34 fwd showed some stuff.

All missed hitting forwards leading at them and generally kicked it anywhere in the forward line. #34 took 2 good marks and good kicks for goal (I think).

Very hard to watch thou on phone and was a scrappy game.

Not just picking the kid or the academy it happens way too much.

I did screenshot one of our going I50 and it sh#&s me to tears. It's not just the academy but our club and I think it is #26.

Our firsts, reserves and the academies do it. Gulden is one that actually looks, assesses and delivers.

Have a guess where the ball goes.

I agree.

FoxFooty put that stat out a couple of weeks ago with Errol being the best I50 kick in the comp. It's what separates a lot of draftable talents, top picks taking the time to assess the correct option in all forms of disposal whilst those who don't assess and look tend to not be picked. The issue is it's very hard to teach a player to stop and wait because many have the natural instinct to go fast and to the hotspot all the time, but, the hotspot kick should only be the last option (this does depend on the system but usually in most systems it is the last option).

Possible
but aged 21 in this bio
so perhaps a brother?

That’s what I meant. Rogers moved from Adelaide a few years ago. His son, Mitch, joined the academy but wasn’t eligible if good enough to have a bid matched by Sydney.

So does anyone know if this player is his second son?

there is a Tyler Rogers playing for Manly Warringah Wolves but was U19 in 2019 and 2020 so I would assume he is now 20?

The rogers in the Academy (Number 3 in the u18/19) is Felix Rogers. He plays for North Shore.
idk about second son or anything tho.

Not sure where to put this, but I thought I would put in a marker post somewhere. The rumour is that the whispers are getting a little bit louder about Vic clubs thinking they would be better off with their own U/19s teams once again, instead of the NAB Cup. This is in part a response to the northern academies. Still early days, but it is a concept that has yet to be dismissed. I would be interested if anyone else has heard anything?

It’ll most likely be Melbourne clubs in conjunction with the private schools running elite under age footy in Melbourne. I’ve posted in another thread that imo the AFL will privatise the system.

As for preparing young players for AFL imo the academies do the best job of this and it shows because it appears players are more AFL ready when they come from this system. I said on this forum a long time ago that junior footies future is with academies in conjunction with the draft. And nothing has changed my mind.

I don’t agree with this. Junior footy is about playing with your mates. The Academies have a role in nsw and qld because there is no generational knowledge of AFL throughout the system so the survival of the nsw and qld teams relies on it.

The Southern states are different. I’m down with Under 19s because those who don’t make the grade will at least have a home to return to. But up until that point, kids should be playing with their home clubs. And the northern states should be aspiring to reach that as well.

Junior local footy is about playing with your mates. Junior elite footy which the highest level U19 comps are is about developing that talent as best possible.
It’s why young players go and play underage state league level footy, they’re trying to achieve the highest possible standard. If they want to play with their mates it’s most likely they stay at a local level.

No, the word is that it could be club-run U/19s again. Once again, this is just a whisper at this stage and may never go anywhere, but it is being spoken about.

Honestly I don’t think it goes anywhere. Unless the clubs are able to obtain these players they won’t have an interest imo it’s a big cost. Sydney does it as it grows the game thus increasing interest in the sport with the club at the forefront of exposure. It makes a lot of sense. It’s just not about junior development. It’s about marketing.

This is where I believe the private school system comes into play. It would be very similar to how Sydney’s academy is. Produce players but also increase the school’s exposure thus increasing the demand to want to go to that school. With a sister relationship with an AFL club.

And long term strips the AFL of a lot of costs running junior footy in Victoria thus saving a massive amount of money with a similar outcome.

I don’t like it but long term I can see it happening.

No issue with rep games etc. But when you pull kids out of their community sport in their mid teens then spit them out of the elite programs at age 18 you are creating a problem.

It’s pretty much what happens in every elite footy program in Australia right now. Whether that be Nab league, WAFL, SANFL or private school system or an AFL acadeetc they’re elite level programs that cater for juniors that want to further their footy career in the hope of getting drafted. And the private school system does it all the time, they offer a sporting scholarship with that teenager getting taken away from their local side and sometimes their local community to allow them to have the chance to further their sporting career as best as possible. Which also in turn allows them a better education.

Lance Franklin is the best example of this, moved from Dowerin at the age of 15 to take up a sporting school at Wesley college. Left his family & friends & local community to do this which in turn means he left his local sporting community.

As for SANFL or WAFL it’s about networking with other parents & businesses that may open doors for further opportunities in life. I’ve seen this first hand a number of times. I’ve seen some not so smart kids end up with very good employment due to being able to kick a footy around at a decent level. My advice to younger players has always been don’t let footy use you, use it the best you can to further your life.

As for the academy system I’m pretty sure it applies exactly as the WA/SA leagues. Use it the same way. The players that graduated froM that system that moved to say the SANFL would be definitely getting looked after work wise and most likely career wise.

Now if your one of those parents that has this idea that little Johnny is the next Chris Judd and pushes everything in the one direction well that’s a parenting issue not a system issue.

what is your alternative?

SWANS ACADEMY V GIPPSLAND POWER - U/19s

If you're out Werribee way how about rolling down to support the boys!

You will also get a glimpse of WillPapley, who imo looks and moves like Tom but is not anywhere as good as his older brother.

The academy side should be able to put a score on Gippsland. They are very ordinary this season.
