Seems like the top 7 teams this year are pretty much settled and certain to make the top 8:

Geel/Coll/St K/Freo/WB/Carl/Haw

In my opinion there is a fair gap between these sides and the 8th team. The teams below these 7 have not shown many signs of being competitive against the higher ranked teams.

I am wondering which team it would be "best" for the finals series to slot into the 8 and who people think will make it?

There are probably only 3 chances:

Sydney, Kangaroos and Adelaide on current form.

Sydney seem most likely to make it (esp if they hold on against Richmond) but given Sydney have been non-competitive against the top sides I think it would be better if Adelaide managed to sneak in as they have more potential to be a threat.

Or is it just going to be like 2009, where the 8th team was in the finals by default and didn't give a whimper?

Take Carlton out of that 7. They are average.

I hate Carlton with a passion, so I have no vested interest in standing up for them, but they have beaten Geelong and St Kilda this year and therefore are 'potentially' good for the finals series as they have shown that, on their day, they can match it with a top side.

Also, given Carlton are 8-6 with a good % and get to play the bottom 2 teams in West Coast and Richmond in their run home, it is highly unlikely they will miss the 8.

I don't think Carlton are that good by any stretch, by they do meet my criteria of looking certain to make the 8 and good enough to be competitive against other finals opponents.

Adelaide are the pick of the 3.
Sydney are holding on after a good start, and the Kangaroos are rubbish and currently playing above themselves.

Yet have won 8 games, including beating the Top 2 teams & are the equivalent of 2 games ahead of 9th spot, when taking into account North's very ordinary percentage.

By two games you mean one game? Because it is one game.

Carlton are average and far from a certainty to make the 8.

Sydney do not deserve it at all.

North have beaten all teams below them bar Essendon (who we haven't played yet) as well as Hawthorn and Carlton who are both in your magical 7.

Still have Richmond, Essendon, West Coast and Melbourne to play. If we beat Sydney this week we will be a game clear in the 8 and 2 games clear of the Crows.

All of this despite missing Petrie (who is 2 weeks away), Liam Anthony and Phil Krakouer.

The future is so bright I'm wearing shades.

Please have another read of my post, then you will comprehend that for North to get ahead of Carlton, they will have to win 2 more games than Carlton, in the last 8 games, because of North's poor percentage.

North will probably. They had won three in a row prior to today and didn't play all that badly against the Cats. Probably deserve it more then anyone else.

Agreed. North Melbourne and Adelaide to fill the final spots of the top 8. Sydney dropped their game against Richmond this afternoon and they look to be struggling. North Melbourne pushed Geelong this afternoon and are playing well while I would be very surprised if adelaide lose too many more games this season and will be very hard to beat at home

The fact that you think it could come down to % between North and Carlton tells me you agree that Carlton shouldn't be included in the 7 teams the OP listed.

They should be grouped with North, Sydney and Adelaide

:D
How about Richmond, they have youth and passion, would be great to see them in the top 8 (not gonna happen though)

Only three games out of the 8 now..:D

Most likely finish 9th considering the bookies have already paid out on us winning the spoon.....not a bad result......
