Re: The Curtain Raiser...

It seems as thought the AFL has decided to stick with the format of the Dregs first and work your way up, well i tend to think that's a big mistake.
How many newcomers to the game would have switched on tonight to see what this sport is all about only to witness that. ?
A mirror image of last years Curtain raiser  Both sides very ordinary.

Agree. Real bright sparks the AFL. Shocking programming. Just like the ANZAC Day games. "Who cares about the standard just get the muppets in the gate".

Dog sh*t standard football match. With the two new teams coming in how is the AFL going to stop the dilution of quality that is happening every year?

Makes me laugh with these bottom clubs clutching at straws hoping skinny 18 year old draught picks will be their saviour. Its scary that they go straight from being very ordinary SANFL players straight into AFL teams (ie Trengove to Melbourne etc).

Standard is slipping badly and looks like another year where I start to watch games then turn TV off most of them after 5 minutes.

btw - having played Sydney first round now for 3 years in a row.....do you reckon someone at AFL Fixturing land coukd get a little mre creative?....FFS.

I rekon aye, this season would be the third year that Brisbane and West Coast have played each other in round 1 too.

LOL, I thought the AFL had it in for the Blues? Or are we over that conspiracy now?

I assume you agree with Collingwood's draw too for 'strategic' reasons?

Your attitude is typical of most football supporters (especially Carlton supporters) and it's why the AFL get away with rigging the competition for 'strategic' reasons. You don't care if it's your club cheating or those in charge of the competition skewing rules to suit their agenda, provided it benefits your club you couldn't give a continental.

Morally and ethically bankrupt.
That is one huge soapbox you drag around with you. Smacks of downtrodden syndrome. Anything that your own team doesn't benefit from is corrupt and anybody that supports a team that is benefitted in some way is morally and ethically bankrupt. You really do like to generalise about the supporter bases of others don't you? Your arguments might be taken more seriously if you didn't feel the need to alienate garden variety opposition supporters at almost every turn.

You just know that the Firefly had his OP for this thread written in about January and has been all a quiver just waiting to hit the enter button. :D

Gee the Saints fans are arrogant.

i was up watching it, hence my posts late last night. normally wouldnt, but it was season opener and all. didnt watch it all. ****ing uncontested slop with players who cannot execute basic skills and the onus is simply on being able to aerobically outrun the other team. it's not football.

i was drawn to the sport of Australian Football in the early 1990s due to the repeated CONTESTS during the game. but apart from fine displays from teams such as GEE, SK & WB last season, one of the great aspects of the game which should be demonstrated in some shape or form in every match in the elite comp of the game is largely non-existant in the majority of games.

if Dimwit reckons this sort of game will win over the masses of western sydney up here, than he's far removed from reality than i originally thought. fellow sydneysiders would simply brand it as kick-to-kick, and rugby union displays much of that as it is, and look how much that game is popular in the west and bleeding out of it's arse generally. multiply the incidence of uncontested kick-to-kick by 1 000 000 for an AFL match.

and on another note, im heading to melbourne for the AGP for the weekend tonight (as would many other visitors) and was planning to catch a match sat night (before last nights match knocked some sense into me), but cant because there are no matches in Melbourne on sat night. unbelievable! there will prolly be as many visitors in the city this weekend as an AFL GF or Melb Cup day, and an opportunity to showoff the game goes missing. but arguably the game of the round is scheduled when these visitors will be at another event.

Good post, excellent points!!!:thumbsu:

I don't know why its so hard for those rocket surgeons at the AFL ...

Re: The Curtain Raiser...

Should be a game between last year's grand finalists first up IMO, or if it must be hosted at the MCG, the two highest finishing Victorian sides from the previous season.

I disagree with this Winty. I thought last years game between the Hawks and the Cats was a nothing match. Hawks fans didn't care, they were still dining out on the year before and I am sure the win didn't do much for Cats fans. These matches work much better with a big build up, similar to the saints and cats last year who basically both went in unbeaten (cannot remember if they were both unbeaten??)

Let the spuds play each other and the real contenders can build up all the suspense and hype.

Re: The Curtain Raiser...

You have not worked out by now the AFL is all about $$$? Any other game not involving Blues, Bombers, Pies or us won't get as big a crowd and same amount will watch as its on a Thursday and first game of the year. This game probably gets half the crowd in round 11 as it would now, GF rematch or WB v someone probably gets around 50k no matter when its played.

i think youre on the money there..makes perfect sense.
although i'd prefer a blockbuster season opener, and youd think that logical for overseas viewers as an introduction to AFL and new season..however its all about getting the most bang for your bucks, sorry getting the most bucks from your bang??-marketing,demographics,audience/membership targetting etc..and building up to the blockbusters on fri+saturdays.

still, i was quite surprised by the intensity in 1st quarter..didnt last long..theyd all blown their load by 2nd quarter..i wonder how Cuzz REALLY feels about being at richmond? i know, he's been generously thrown a line, and should be grateful etc..but you know, when he goes home after a game like last nite, what goes thru his head..'sheesh,what am i doing h...?'

I don't know why its so hard for those rocket surgeons at the AFL ...

You ever tried to operate on a rocket? Very delicate work.

It amazes me the AFL are so open in addmitting their dollars first/sporting integrity second agenda.

It absolutely staggers me supporters are prepared to do it too.

No team should be guaranteed the opening game for the season - or any other game for that matter.

The NFL award the opening game of the season to the Superbowl winner. It's considered an honour that's earnt. This year, the team from the smallest TV market in the US will kickoff the season. This same team couldn't get a natioal game to save themselves a few seasons ago, where on the verge of relocating and coming off a season from hell. Now they're the Superbowl champion in the most watched TV show in US history and will this year command opening billing and a host of nationally televised games.

That - please note AFL & 'Big 4' sycophants - is what's called equalisation.

Everyone has equal opportunity to succeed.

Agree with that, as a Carlton supporter more than happy to see the season kick off either shared among the 16 (17) teams or for last seasons premiers to have the honor.

Though can we still play Richmond in round 1? Its working quite well for us.

Playing Richmond is good for us of late as an early win can get those membership applications flowing in, and given our tough early draw, it might inspire confidence to get a win on the board early. However, it isn't much of a fixture unless both clubs are in the running for finals, and it would be nice to mix it up a bit.

Given the first sentence, the sencond is rather ironic.

Typically too, you can't debate the argument on it's merits, so you take a personal shot. Not sure why you bother replying to my posts when you misrepresent what I've written in your over-zealous attempts to take yet another personal shot.

Your arguments might be taken more seriously if you didn't feel the need to alienate garden variety opposition supporters at almost every turn.
Some of us post to be popular.

Some of us post to stimulate discussion.

I can see why you're confused.

A few points.
1. Will not be the worst game all year.
2. There will be bigger thrashings during the year.
3. Scoreline is 2:1 in the Blues favour for this fixture over the last 3 years. If St Blunder made the GF 3 years in a row the result will be 3 despairing losses, it's their culture.:) It's time for the AFL to put their thinking caps on and get fairdinkum about promoting the game and ban St Failure from future embarrassing grand final chokes.:D

The reason it's Richmond/Carlton?

Attendance: 72,010

When one team are spoon favorites and a borderline to make a finals appearance...ie, Pretty much worst case.

The AFL doesn't want it's kick off game drawing 30-40k, so the smaller Melbourne clubs wont get a shot at it.

If anyone's going to be banned, it's those who damage the structural integrity and overall fairness of the game.
