Given how insufferable and puritanical they are I wouldn't have thought that would have made any difference.
Where's the evidence of their puritanism? It's been an old boy's club for as long as I can ever remember. If you were a player of note, they fall all over themselves to pump up your tyres at every opportunity, no matter what your disciplinary record or litany of off-field indiscretions.

Carey has Matthews covered in his sleep for 'unbecoming incidents'. And yet he's routinely lauded as 'the King' by everyone he encounters in the media, week after excruciating week.

No he hasn't.

Jeans trots out the old whataboutism 🙄

The berttochi hams lol
Absolutely disgraceful from Jeans. Just don't turn up and let the matter run its course, rather than offer up such utter tripe to supposedly defend your position.

His statement was complete nonsense from start to finish.

If they were going to be serious about that there would be a few ex-players out of a gig.
More than a few. Which only underlines how little puritanism I see in the standards applied to former players across the media. Play the game reasonably well, and you're a 'champion'. No matter what atrocious behaviour you're come up with off the field.

I'm referring specifically to McAvaney and a few others with that. At times he was absolutely insufferable (more than usual that is) with what standards the game needed to maintain and so on. Made me vomit even more than usual.

McAvaney was a simulacrum of himself after the first couple of years when he was recognised as a great commentator. And he did his research so knew his shit, but after those couple of years, yes he was insufferable.

How he continued to get a gig is beyond me. Maybe he had photos.

Matthews' hit on Bruns was utterly appalling.

Carey's violence against women still has that covered for me, though.

Yes, it was appalling and not an isolated incident either...he did a similar off the ball king hit in a State game if I recall corectly..

O'Dea's hit on Greening was arguably worse given the longer term effect it had ...horrendous act of thuggery..

On Jeans..I had direct football experience with bim and he was neither smug nor arrogant in my experience of him...he was very good to me as a young footballer...

I definitely don’t subscribe to that old school faux hard man crap that ‘what happens on the field stays on the field’ and that you just ignore something because it took place during a game of professional contact sport BUT I also don’t subscribe to the idea that a person can be defined for the rest of their life by one or two moments of being a c***.

Based on the things I’ve done in my life and mistakes I’ve made I HAVE to believe that you can f*** up and still redeem yourself or find a way to become a good person again. I don’t see why a Matthews or a Barry Hall, or yes, even a Carey or Ablett Sr if we extend this to off-field incidents shouldn’t be given the same latitude

Barry Cable it was. Might have been in Perth.

That's very reasonable and agree totally. Obviously the serial offenders - and Matthews was definitely one of them - are a little different. A whole host of players in recent times - Houli, Hawkins, Gaff - all had moments of absolute madness or frustration (even insanity). I wouldn't class any of them as dirty players though. Not remotely.

My personal view is the protests against a current or ex-player doesn't really relate to what they do and what they pretend to care about. Not really. It's a personal bias against that player and/or club they represented that was there already.
