McAvaney was a simulacrum of himself after the first couple of years when he was recognised as a great commentator. And he did his research so knew his shit, but after those couple of years, yes he was insufferable.

How he continued to get a gig is beyond me. Maybe he had photos.

I would like the AFL ( but they are just too lazy to do it ) to use the same principles of high performance re the commentators of the TV Networks who broadcast their games as Augusta do with the US Masters

Pretty sure it was CBS - they had the tv rights for many years - re the US Masters . And in the early/mid 70s - there was a legendary commentator ( similiar to McAveney - did all the sports etc ) - so he had a great track record and was an esteemed commentator - however in the final round he got caught up in the excitement - there was a huge gallery behind the 17th green - and he said " the big mob behind the 17th green " . And as a result - Augusta went to CBS and said thats not good enough - he should have said the patrons behind the 17th green - and we want him banned for the next 3 years - and thats exactly what happened - he wasnt allowed to be part of their commentary team for the next 3 years at The Masters - even though they had theTV rights

And there was another commentator - Gary someone an ex player - a bit of a smart aarse type - and 1 year he had a go about the condition of 1 of the Augusta greens - and for that he got a life time ban - he commentated on the golf for about 20 years - re the tournaments - but never at Augusta

I just wish the AFL would do the same ie - theve sold the TV rights - but if there are commentators who are ratshiit or make crass comments - then we dont want them broadcasting our product

Gary McCord - said that the greens were like they had been bikini waxed. Was never invited back.

I remember Jack, very good commentator, so good that I'd recognize his voice before his face. Even after all these years.
The other guy was a bit after my time of watching golf. He's in the Tin Cup movie I think.

Yeah its all about the standards. Augusta is one of those real old school organizations. They took a real long time letting blacks in as members IIRC. That area of Georgia still has blacks serving in white suits.

I also recall Howard Cosell getting the boot from Monday Night Football for excited calling a rampaging running back a 'little monkey'. Nobody ever thought of Cosell as being racist and most likely wasn't. Story was he called his young grandkids, nieces, nephews, and other kids monkeys and it slipped out. Guy was the best in the booth.

I don’t get the angst over commentary. Yeah it’s annoying when it’s not great - BT is a twit so I’m definitely not immune from having a moan about them but at the end of the day they’re just blokes talking about what’s happening: they aren’t impacting on the actual narrative so really I just don’t care that much

They are 100% impacting on the actual narrative. The relationship between what gets highlighted in commentary and who gets suspended alone is massive.

Couldn't disagree more. They're mostly if not all absolutely appalling. Barely any of them actually call the game and make the game the sole focus. We get unending garbage and blokey crap about the umpires, or what they would have done, neverending nicknames for individual players, and so on. It's utter and complete shit. Watch literally any other sport (soccer especially) and it's not just jarring it's a different universe.

And they absolutely impact on the narratives. Player suspensions one, but possibly worse is the relentless endorsement of whatever insane rule change has been brought in that week. With the possible sole exception of Carey and a couple of others who are under the impression there's a football match going on.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than lining up just about all current commentators, pointing out their worst atrocities, and booting them from those jobs never to return. Will never happen though.

On Jeans..I had direct football experience with him and he was neither smug nor arrogant in my experience of him...he was very good to me as a young footballer...
All well and good. Having never met the man, I can't dispute your overall assessment of his character.

On this occasion, though, his response was just about the most self-righteous and inane drivel I've ever heard from anyone in my life. Someone's face gets caved in through an entirely cowardly act of thuggery and he wants to pontificate about what 'your club' has supposedly done in the past. Pathetic is the mildest word I can think of to describe his behaviour in that moment.

So, in the contest of character on the day, there really was no comparison between the two men interviewed.

Yes, it was appalling and not an isolated incident either...he did a similar off the ball king hit in a State game if I recall corectly..

O'Dea's hit on Greening was arguably worse given the longer term effect it had ...horrendous act of thuggery..

One of my mates back then was Russell Greene, the Hawk with the football in the video when the melee was full on. Did OK captained the Victorian team IIRC. He absolutely loved Jeans and would have run over broken glass if he'd asked him too no doubt.

But it does not excuse Jeans' response, even if inside he was livid which would not surprise me at all.

Again look at Hafey, he was ropeable and could not look at Jeans.

Was also voted the league's Most Valuable Player in 1984.

What I would give to be able to watch on tv with crowd noise only.

A mate of mine is claiming Melbourne will lose another 2 players to covid protocols but can't tell me who. I am calling BS, however at least by putting it here in case he knows something I don't and then I can get a comfy job at the HS writing bullshit articles.
Well he is currently half right with Petty confirmed out with spicy cough.

😉

That actually happened last year? The year before?-in Covid and the commentators disappeared for some of the match and it was fantastic.
I do remember that.

Back maybe 10-15 years ago you could turn commentary off on Foxtel and just have crowd noise in the background. No idea why they removed that feature.

For some reason they think the commentators are entertainment when all they are is trash half the time if not more :(

One reason I love going to games is not having to deal with commentary

At our recent clash with the Hawks, all was going well until the last quarter when the guy sitting behind me took a phone call & started commentating the game to whomever he was talking to

It was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had at a game

I often watch games ( including neutral games) or qtrs or halves of games with the volume turned off - no sound at all

However there can be drawbacks - 2010 Qual final i did that - in the last qtr anyway - when Geel had 20 plus inside 50s to StK solitary one - had them right on the ropes - just had to take the lead - after being well behind at h/t

But when Ling kicked that goal at the death to put the Cats in front - with no volume on - you cant here the umpires whistle - so i was delirious - all good a Geel goal - didnt know there would be any penalty paid against Mooney ( which was a clear freekick for in the back )

So it was a real bummmer - because i thought Geel were in front - however if you had the volume on youd know straight away the umpire had freekicked Mooney - because you could here the whistle clearly

It's frustrating because commentators have a big opportunity to make the game more accessible to people, by adding some actual technical insights rather than discuss the same three tropes or intentionally mispronounce player names

knowledgeable, switched on viewers is not the demographic they're aiming at.

I know how you feel. I was at the game and the crowd was too loud to hear the whistle. Was celebrating like a madman until it got called back and then it took 5 minutes to figure out what happened.

Exactly the same as me. It was so loud and I was going beserk.
Looking back at the free, it was pretty soft. Gwilt (I think the player was) took a dive.
But even if we had won, I think Collingwood would have still won the flag. They were the best team.

Where I was watching from I actually saw the umpire before the ball went through. So I knew unfortunately it was a free straight away.
