Stratton Frawley Hardwick
McEvoy Frost Sicily

Henderson Mitchell Smith
Ceglar Shiels Worpel

Omeara Lewis Gunston
Bruest Patton Wingerz

Scrimshaw, Timmy, Scully, Burgoyne

Lots more rotation of mids from the forwardline ie Wingerz and Omeara

Pops not in but honestly hard for me to get him in with all the above players all doing well year

Liam Shiels the shock out. I don't like it but I'm struggling to find a spot for him due to team balance. His lack of position versatility is what has cost him. You could drop Stratton, move Burgoyne to play on opposition small-medium forwards, and then keep Shiels in the side as another inside/outside mid option.

Purely based on training reports I'm unsure if Frost is necessarily ahead of Hartley for CHB. Either way, swap one out for the other.

The bench names have nothing to do with their perceived rating compared to those named on field, but with the fact they are the most versatile players in the 22 and not naming them on field better illustrates how the dynamic of the team might operate.

Based on those players versatility you could quite easily remove any player from this starting 18 and be able to restructure the side so as to allow you to bring in the best available rather than a like-for-like and yet still retain team balance.

The emergency list (not shown) indicates that our depth is far stronger than 2019. Looking forward to adding a fit and firing Jarman Impey back into the side at some point.

Shiels will play, but I understand your views, Clarko is conservative.
Maybe T.O. or Poppy or Scrimshaw instead.
The players who don't get a spot, fill me with confidence for 2020.

I did consider dropping each of these players too.

Kept O'Brien because the training reports indicate that he will hit the 2020 season with the same form (or better) that he finished 2019 with. I can't see the club dropping him for round 1 and risk messing with that form or his confidence (likely the driver behind the form). Dropping O'Brien would move Gunston into the 3rd tall forward spot, but dropping Gunston instead of O'Brien to let Shiels back in gives us another unacceptable result. Gunston is also a higher quality player, very versatile, and currently the VC.

Poppy is probably one of the most on the edge of the 22 and I expect and hope that one of the younger small forward options can break out and actually push him out by mid-season (purely for the sake of the future - nothing against Poppy!). But currently there isn't a better option available. Hanrahan showed good signs in 2019 but the training reports haven't indicated that he's going to be named in R1. Wingard could technically take the spot, allowing Shiels to take the midfield time Wingard would play. But even then Wingard and Poppy are very different small forwards. We lose forward defensive pressure and also lose a heap of X-factor from the midfield group.

Scrimshaw can probably be most sensibly dropped to get Shiels back in. Any of Gunston, Burgoyne or McEvoy could fit in back there and we likely still retain enough in terms of rebounding and intercept ability. But I'd veto dropping Scrimshaw though as he's shown potential last season to be an elite player. He's missed plenty of footy at GCS and with us last season due to injury. If he's fit we need to get AFL minutes into him. There's good reason to believe he could be every bit as good as Sicily - perhaps even better.

Odds are Shiels will actually be in the actual round 1 side. I just don't know who for. It will likely come down to one of the realities around form, injury or match-ups. But it is ultimately a good thing when you have a player as good as Shiels potentially sitting out.

Unfortunately I do think Scrimshaw will miss at the beginning due to tightness for spots and senior players getting preference but I definitely think he will get games if not be a lock by the middle of the season. Competition for spots is really tight. Any underperforming player would have to be nervous. I also think we'll be playing tall.

Starting 22:

B: Stratton Frawley Sicily
HB: Hardwick McEvoy Henderson
C: Smith Worpel Scully
HF: Burgoyne Lewis Wingard
F: Bruest Patton Puopolo
Fol: Ceglar Mitchell O'Meara
Int: Frost O'Brien Gunston Sheils
Inj: Impey

Our Box Hill team will also be exciting to watch:

B: Howe Koschitzke Jiath
HB: Day Hartley Scrimshaw
C: Golds Maginness Ross
HF: Walker Nash Morris
F: Moore Jeka Hanrahan
Fol: Reeves Jones Cousins
Int: Greaves Morrison Glass Pepper Cassar*

Am I missing something here but hasn’t Gunston been out the majority of preseason (ankle surgery) and is still yet to return? If that is the case then in regards to everyone naming their best 22 then it might be Gunners that isn’t named until he gets himself 100% right. He’s got 6 weeks till round 1 but depending on how his ankle comes up I wouldn’t be pencilling him in just yet.

B: Hardwick, Frawley, Stratton
HB: Scrimshaw, McEvoy, Sicily
C: Smith, Mitchell, Henderson
HF: Wingard, Lewis, Gunston
F: Breust, Patton, Puopolo
FOL: Ceglar, O’Meara, Worpel
I/C: Frost, Scully, Shiels, Burgoyne

The three fringe players in this side would have to be Scrimshaw, Puopolo and Frost. While the next three players in line would have to be O’Brien, Maginness and Hartley. If there are any injuries these players will be called up. I could even see O’Brien, Maginnes and Hartley replace Scrimshaw, Puopolo and Frost in the best 22. I’m expecting Poppy to get dropped at some point throughout the year, I just can’t see him going much further. And I am also expecting an early debut from Finn. Possibly even round one.

The 22nd player in 2019 was Daniel Howe. The breakdown in games around him was:

Nash 14 games Wingard 14 Lewis 12 Howe //// 12 cousins 12 Scrimshaw 10 Morrison 10 hanrahan 9
Next was Roughy on 8 and no one above him left the club

arbitarily say the top 16 with 18 minimum games are the 'locks', the 'bottom six' from the 22 were filled by 12 players to one extent or another

so its a matter of who breaks into the top 16, and who breaks into the next 12, nominally playing 8 games or more
No real need to agonise who to leave out of the 22. Although if an older player doesn't crack the best 34, they would be wondering...

Only Glass and Mitchell survived last year

Yeah he misses due to interrupted pre season. Others have done more work on the track and deserve their place ahead of him

You'd have to wait and see after the pre-season games for mine, I didn't think he was playing Rd 1 last year either but some of the quarters he played in those few games really locked him in.

Scrimshaw is a lock. We had no reason to bring him in for round 23 when CJ adequately played that role but the club obviously see him as an important cog in the machine. You don’t go top 10 for no reason. His mark when West Coast were pressing speaks volumes of the kids make up, safer option was to spoil boundary line, but no he elected to pluck it. Great field kick and a big kid, look for more mid mins aswell this year. He’s best 18 for mine
