When the whips were cracking short wasn't good enough.

It's tough, not easy vs elite mids in finals.

The graham injury made it tough too
Not his fault really

Short has never played midfield until this year and he did a great job when played there
But he should only ever be our 7th-10th choice to be played in the midfield

Getting a little nervous about the mids becoming very '1 paced'

Prestia-Cotchin-Martin-Graham-Ross-Taranto-Hopper, none of whom have an explosive turn of speed.

We're really going to have to rely a lot on the outside players to provide that link with speed and delivery, ie: Bolton-Sonsie-Rioli-Rioli-Picket etc.

If we get Taranto then I think Cotchin should retire. He had a great season but with Prestia that makes 2 A grade mids. Martin stays and that is another.

We need to be able to develop our young players through there. I think Cumberland could easily run through the midfield if he trains there, very dynamic and aggressive. Reckon MRJ could also do it. Ross, Sonsie, Banks, not to mention Short who was very good in general for a guy that hasn't played midfield since junior years. We will also draft one or two as well. How will these types develop if the third midfield place is taken by Cotchin, who like Edwards will only slow down further. As good as Cotch was this year, he struggled a bit against the A grade mids, that is not going to get better next season.

Me too. I guess Cotchin will be gone soon and Dusty will probably spend more and more time forward. Ross looked good playing the Lambert role. Bolton would have to be in there too for some pace.

Run MRJ and Cumberland through there as well as Bolton and Sonsie and it's not too bad. Graham will not make it as a full time mid, hasn't so far and adding more top shelf mids will push him further away.

I guess with Cumberland is that he has to be played in the position where he has the most impact, a bit like Baker I suppose, they could both rotate through the middle but do we lose that impact by not playing them where they belong? Same with MRJ.

I'm a bit more bullish on Graham than most, when he's been released from that defensive mid role and plays more outside then he's quite damaging.

Apparently DeGoey is leavng Collingwood it seems.

Look it sounds crazy, even for me its a little crazy, but I live in crazy, I think we should get him.

Why get De Goey?

1. Proven in finals, especially heat and pressure.

2. Better kick and has some speed and power.

3. I want to hit the 2022 draft, I think its very important we stick to it

He is a little older but we have older types to and the youngsters are coming through.

I am still banging on about playing a different way but it still means we need to kick goals and have a midfield. DeGoey does that and could relieve pressure off Dusty and even Shai.

The other thing is talk of trading out the likes of Ralphsmith is batshit crazy!!

in the contest sidewards movement counts for more of the mark speed

Agree, Graham plays the half forward outside/transition role very well, but he needs to be really fit to do it well, unlike the last 2 months where he has carried an injury. But he is not an inside mid. He and Lambert played it well together, no reason why he and Ross can't do likewise.

I think Cumberland if played there could be a very exciting mid. That blend of breakaway pace, attack on the ball and great agility is pretty rare. Is he composed enough not sure, but would be nice to find out.

Taranto (if we get him) is also very effective forward, so obviously is Martin, so it would be exciting to have three enigmatic type mids mixing it through the middle and also forward. Add Bolton to that category as well. Plus it transitions Cumberland into another position if he has a form slump or starts getting heavily marked. Other than Prestia, all our mids have duel roles, you can finally see how that has helped Ross cement a place in the side.

Cumberland is primarily a forward for mine

He was drafted as a mid/forward. If he trains there over the preseason it will help his general game anyway so why wouldn't you trial it. He might be a gun mid for all we know, he has so many traits that could make this happen. The one question mark in his game right now to me is how good/composed he is in traffic. So far he has done well but his possession rate is pretty low, if he could improve that he would be a much better player.

He is a forward.

Plays a bit like Daffy but primarily a good forward hopefully.

Those trying to make him something else is against the applecart and ignoring the grains in the wood of precedence
