Thanks to the pies, who ironically handed us two premierships, our AFL record of three grand final wins in a row seems safe! I was getting concerned that the Eagles would do what we did (in reverse) in losing a grand final, then winning three. Still the best team of all time!!!:thumbsu:

Best of all time?

I think a certain team managed 4 in a row :)

In a mickey mouse suburban competition of only 12 teams, in the 1920s before salary caps and the draft?

Yeah, thats comparable.

Normally I don't bother coming on to other team's boards and 'troll', but this can't go uncommented. You guys sustained excellence for 3-4 years. We sustained excellence for 20........

Can't really call it the same team over 20 years...

good come back :thumbsu:

Very odd comeback, I'd say.
In 1971, the Hawthorn Football Team went out an won it's second flag.
In 1991 the Hawthorn Football team went out and won it's 9th flag, and 8th in 20 years. With 5 runners up in that time too.
So the team that went out and won the '01 Flag was exactly the same personnel that lost the '04 GF, yeah?
We even gave you guys the coach that did it for you....

No exactly the same, but the leadership group was. The spine was.

Only because of the inequalities that interstate teams had in those days having to play their home finals at the G.

If you were the greatest team ever, it shouldn't have mattered :) Put simply.

You were a great team back then, one of the best I've seen. Nut best ever? I really doubt it.

There have been 3, and 3 only, dynasties in the history of Football, in the true sense of the word: Pies in the 20s, Dees in the 50s, Hawks in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Winning 3 in a row, followed by a runners up, is amazing, especially in the modern era, but still doesn't count. You have to sustain it. And that seems impossible in this day and age.....

Exactly. :thumbsu:

how isnt a team that played in 4 consecutive grand finals and winning 3 in a row in a era of traveling to the other side of the country, drafts and salary caps not the best ever?????

Apparently you can't read, but I'll say it again. Smiddy can probably fill you in on the details of the Pies reign, but, as far as the Hawks go:

Lions: 3 from 4 over 4 years
Hawks: 8 and 5 runners up in a sustained period of true excellence over a 20 year period.

The draft/salary cap was introduced in '87, yeah? We won 3 flags after that. We had to travel to Perth in the '91 finals series, not to mention during the year (and to Adelaide and Sydney) on our way to that Flag.

I'll second that and raise you :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Wasn't a team called the Lions in that "suburban" league then? If Brisbane want to be affiliated with Fitzroy by adopting their colours and knickname surely they must claim some of their history, shouldn't they ;)- if they knew it.

How is this relevant? Are you saying because the Brisbane Lions used to be the Fitzroy Lions the 2001-04 side can't be considered the best ever.
