Our Team For Round 1 2012

I like that side very much, Grim. Similar to what I would have. It looks as though it would be easy to fit Brown in, when he returns too. Drop Lisle to the 2s and Lester to the bench. Who is your run-with player though?

Ok here is what I have done

Backs
Patful Merret Golby
Mcgrath
Hanley Goose Adcocok

Throw Mcgrath as a loose defender to fill the hole infront of Clark. He can also be damaging offensively

Mids
Leuy ric Black on the ball
Polec Rockcliff Reddon accros the centre line

Forwards
Banfield Retzlaff Beams
Longer and Patty k out of the square

I know people will query the selection of retzlaff as he is not a huge goal kicker but we know he will work and provide a contest and with better skilled players around him then in the reserves it will creat more opportunities.

Inter Lester (can go forward or back) Mckeever (can cover a role down back if goose is having a shoicker or go into the ruck) Harwood (sounds like he has earnt it)

Sub Crisp (did ok as sub yesterday and I think sub suits him because he is not up to a full game at AFL level as yet but can have a impact for the time he is on)

Emergencies O'Brien (next best) Amon ( I know people won't like this but always should be a emergency because if it is wet he is vert well suited and should come in) Lisle (I know he hasn't been great but always like to have a tall as a emergency and at least he can play either end or go into the ruck.

Also if Hanley susp Lester starts in his sspot jessie O into the team and Josh green as emergency

B Golby Merrett Patfull
HB Lester Maguire Hanley
C Adcock Rockliff Rich
HF Karnezis Lisle Beams
F Banfield Longer McGrath
R Leuenberger Black Redden
B Stiller Polec Polkinghorne
S O'Brien

This is a mixture of how I want the side to be and also who I think will be in the side.

Golby: Has earn't his spot in the side and now it is up to him to cement his spot in the best 22.

Merrett: He play's best down back and that is where he should be come Round 1 IMO.

Patfull: Joel is a key member of our back six and with Drummond out and Adcock and McGrath playing further up the field we need him there!

Lester: Similar to Golby, he has earn't his spot and now needs to play well to cement his spot.

Maguire: It was a choice between him and McKeever and with the form the 2 have been in I had to go with big Matty(even if he did bowl over our Skipper :p ).

Hanley: Provides a lot of run and carry out of the back six and he has a beautiful long kick. Hopefully he doesn't get reported!

Adcock: My favourite player and has played well in the midfield during the pre season so he gets his spot on the wing.

Rockliff: Not much to say here other than we need him so lets hope these migraines stay away!!

Rich: Has had a few inconsistent seasons since his amazing debut year so lets hope he is back to his brilliant best this year!

Karnezis: I almost left him out of the side because he has been in shocking form and some time in the 2's to help him get use to his added bulk would do him good IMO however when he is playing well he is to important to the side to leave out. Especially with Browny out!

Lisle: I decided to leave Merrett down back so therefore I had to make a choice between Lisle, Retzlaff or Cornelius for the CHF spot and from the reports on the 2's match it seems he played the best out of all 3 so he gets the spot in the Round 1 team.

Beams: Ah, my favourite player from the NAB cup games! He has without doubt earn't his spot here for Round 1 and he should play well leading up from the Half Forward flank and kicking some goals :thumbsu:

Banfield: He hasn't been in the greatest from so far this year but he has had limited opportunities at the same time so I wouldn't want to judge him to harshly. We definitely need him in the side and hopefully he kicks a few against the Dee's to help get us a win!

Longer: I am not sure who has been the better Ruck so far out of Hudson and Longer however I am sure that Longer has been the better forward and that is what we need from our back up Ruck almost more than anything particularly with Browny out. I wish him the best of luck for Round 1! P.S. What a steal!! :p

McGrath: With Brown out we need all of our forwards to be able to kick goals and McGrath has the potential to bag 5-6 goals when he is on. Lets hope he fires against the Dee's and helps get us over the line!

Leuenberger: I have been disappointed with Leuy so far however he is our best Ruck and one of our best players so he is definitely our number 1 Ruck for Round 1. Besides, he hasn't played bad enough to lose a spot for Round 1

Black: Please don't retire Blacky!! Ever! He is still one of our best mids if not our best mid and without him we would be in a lot of trouble. He is still an absolute superstar and hopefully he has a good game against the Dee's to help us win the midfield battle.

Redden: This young bloke is ready to take the next step this year along with Rich and Rockliff and if they do we could find ourselves pushing that top 8!

Stiller: He does all of the small things well and he can play just about any position on the ground to a fairly decent standard. Stiller gets put on the bench as our utility and could come in handy against the Dee's. He is very good at clean up work in the back line so look for him to go there if one of the young backs are struggling e.g. Golby, Lester... He provides us with a lot of flexibility. Very underrated on this board IMO.

Polec: Such a clean user of the footy..something we don't have a lot of! We need this bloke in the side and playing well if we are to push the top 8 this year so hopefully he can play well in the first few Rounds and cement his spot.

Polkinghorne: JUST, and I repeat JUST keeps his spot in the side for Round 1, and he needs to play well if he is to keep it when some of the boys return from injury and and the boys in the reserves play well! I believe in you Polks!

O' Brien is the sub because he adds that tiny bit of class to the team that we lack! Hopefully he plays well and can move up to a bench spot or even the starting 18. I have high hopes for Jesse :)

So that is my side and I am confident that all of the boys in there deserve their spot more than the ones that aren't!

Cheers LS!

Have deliberately not tried to read too many other teams but here is my first attempt at a side for Round 1.

B: Patfull Merrett Adcock
HB: Golby Maguire McGrath
C: Rich Rockliff Hanley
HF: Beams Lester Polec
F: Banfield Longer Karnezis
R: Leuenberger Black Redden

Int: Stiller O'Brien Polkinghorne
Sub: Bewick

Stiller I suppose. You may have found a bit of weakness in my team, Nick Lions.

I left Polks in my team as he was running around with Judd in Maroochydore so thought it might be something they were working on. Plus I couldn't pick another run with player. If Raines is up and about Polks will leave my side to allow Raines the run with role.

B: McGrath Merrett Patfull
HB: Golby Maguire Hanley
C: Rich Adcock Polec
HF: Beams Retzy Karnezis
F: Banfield Longer Rockliff
R: Leuenberger Black Redden

Int: Harwood O'Brien Lester
Sub: Stiller

I haven't gone with a traditional tagger however given that we have Adcock and Redden who are very defensive midfielders I'm not sure that we need to have a shutdown specialist - am a big believer that the best way to slow down an opponent is to make them play both ways, this something that both Jack and Jed will force their opponent to do.

Ive got Rockliff up forward two start for two reasons. Firstly, he showed versus Carlton that he is a dangerous forward. Secondly, if he comes into the rotation with Harwood we hopefully don't drop off to much in the clearances.

I went Retzy for CHF, i think that will Longer/Leuy playing forward there should be enough of a contest deep so Im going for the running capacity of Retzy to pull a key defender out of the area and hopefully leave some space in behind - hopefully Karni can take advantage.

Without the benefit of seeing recent matches against Carlton and Essendon (good and bad news!) and barring injury this is the line-up and I would like to see selected for round 1:

FF Beams McGrath Banfield
HF Karnezis Lisle Lester
Cen Polec Rich Redden
HB Adcock Maguire Hanley
FB Golby Merrett Patfull
Ruck Leuenberger Rockliff Black
Inter Longer Harwood Crisp
Sub Drummond

Key thoughts:

• Prefer to maximise defensive capability hence Merrett at FB.
• McGrath is needed in what is a very inexperienced forward line and he is also a proven multiple goal kicker.
• Longer allows the flexibility to go tall in forward line.
• Main worry from Melbourne is Jamar/Moloney combination. Let Crisp tag Moloney. A ‘big ask’ I know but not sure what other options we have.
• Hopefully Drummond can be eased back in via sub.
• Very inexperienced line-up with seven lions under 10 games.
• Melbourne’s scoring power is blunt like our own and so I am expecting a low scoring, scrappy match.

I’ll be travelling down from Brisbane (love the MCG) for what will be a very emotional day.

We certainly have the potential to win this one.

Well, we're a week out from the naming of the team. Here's how I think they should line up.

Full Back: Golby, Merrett, Patfull
Half Back: Hanley, Maguire, Stiller
Centre: Adcock, Rockliff, Redden
Half Forward: McGrath, Lisle, Beams
Full Forward: Karnezis, Longer, Banfield
Followers: Leuenberger, Black, Rich
Interchange: Lester, Polec, Harwood
Sub: O'Brien.

A few explanations:

The back line is pretty solid, Stiller is named in the backline but should play a run with role. He can be swapped with Adcock, however Adcock's pre-season form in the middle has been impressive and I feel we are better served having a big bodied experienced player in the midfield as opposed to defence.
Beams and McGrath are clever players an while I do believe McGrath's skills are very handy in defence, his ability to lead to advantage is also important.
Lisle, while he hasn't impressed greatly since arriving, does provide a big body and flexibility. If he struggles we can swap him with Sauce and don't lose too much in defence either. The interchange players provide a good mix of run and grunt. Lester is also another flexible tall option. Harwood is a solid in and under player who has impressed. Polec and O'Brien provide a burst of energy and speed without losing too much skill or ball winning ability.

Some players who have missed out:
Polkinghorne hasn't provided enough in the pre-season, he can win the ball but goes missing to easily. Quite simply, has been overtaken in the forward line by Beams and the midfield by Harwood.
Crisp is desperately unlucky, probably deserves a shot but experience is more important at the beginning of the season.
Sheldon, seems to be the 'teacher's pet', but other than forward line pressure his game is lacking. With McGrath up forward he isn't required.
Cornelius' inclusion, would for me, mean leaving out Karnezis. While Ace seems the fitter of the two (who knew) and presents well on a lead, Karnezis gives us crumbing ability.
McKeever still needs time to develop and so far has performed the least admirably out of our KPD, other than possibly Patfull, whose experience gets him over the line.

B:McGrath Merrett Patfull
HB:Adcok Maguire Golby
C:Rich Black Polec
HF:polkinghorne Lester Beams
FF: Banfield Karnezis Longer
RR: Leuenberger Redden Rocky
Int: Hanley O'Brien Harwood Stiller

The backline for me needs McGrath, Adcock and Hanley to provide the rebound, which something we sttruggled with over the pre season. The midfield provides a good balance of outside run with inside ability with Hardwood and stiller being the relieving players off the bench. The forward line is young without much leadership down there, but this will provide the young players the opportunity to build as a group and see what they can do. I would start O'Brien as the sub.

This is the way I see our team shaping up for round 1:

B: Golby Maguire McGrath
HB: Adcock Patfull Hanley
C: Rich Black Polec
HF: Polkinghorne Merrett Lester
F: Banfield Longer Karnezis
R: Leuenberger Rockliff Redden
Int: Beams, O'Brien, Stiller, Bewick (sub)

Emergencies: Harwood, McKeever, Retzlaff

This is pretty much the side that took on Essendon accept for McGrath and Rocky in, Sheldon and McKeever out. Although I am not sure Voss will agree with me given his attachment to Sheldon.

Polkinghorne is a bit luck to keep his place, but I think we should get him to play a lead up half forward role that he was used for a couple of years ago and was reasonably good at.

The coaching staff also may not agree with my small backline. However I think this is our best bet to generate run; Melbourne aren't overly big; and we could always shift Lester to defence if we need to.

The last few spots on the bench are a bit of a lottery, but O'Brien has probably shown enough over the pre-season to warrant his spot; Stiller is reasonably reliable; and Bewick has shown a fair bit of improvement.

(I am assuming Drummond and Raines aren't fit enough and won't be picked at this stage.)

FB: Golby, Merrett, Adcock
HB: Patfull, Maguire, Stiller
C: Rich, Redden, Hanley
HF: Lester, Karnezis, Hawksley
FF: Banfield, Longer , McGrath
FOLL: Leuenberger, Black, Rockliff
I/C: Polec, Beams, Yeo
Sub: Bewick or (O’Brien)

Emg. Bewick or O’Brien (one not selected) McKeever, Retzlaff

I have no love for Polkinghorne, Sheldon or Banfield. However Banfield is in my side only because of lack of small crumbing options. I would have liked to see Dyson come on a bit this year to put some pressure in this area, however it appears he has not progressed as I expected he would. Had Zorko not been injured he would have made my team at the expense of Banfield.

Just on Banfield. I believe he is expendable and very tradeable, especially this year in a very strong draft. His skills have not improved in three years in the seniors. He has, probably the weakest fumbling hands in the team if not the league for a player getting regular games.

I think this weakness directly correlates with his strength in his absolutely elite speed. More often than not he will hit a contest at full speed and it's as if he can't think as fast as he can move which results in some sloppy ball handling. Additionally he can still underestimates his speed in certain situations and seems to be prone to rushing which affects his finishing ability. Despite this he has still been out third highest scoring goal kicker two years in a row and in the brief times he's appeared in the midfield has shown some great promise as a line-breaker. As a forward the pressure he brings to our side is invaluable; without him our already unimpressive forward line seems infinitely less dangerous. He constantly chases, tackles and creates opportunities up forward. He's had a poor pre season (like quite a few of our players) but the ball was barely in the forward line for two of our games and he only played about half of the Adelaide game. Valuable and underrated player in my opinion.

I was one of the supporters, of Merrett-to-forward-line gamble.

Longer has put his hand up, I am now leaning towards giving him a FF run until Brown returns. I'll be happy with Longer creating a contest in F50, goals are a bonus. (I think he's very well capable of having a debut season like Darling)

Hey guys, I was just wondering what are the chances of Drummond playing and Longer making his debut? Thanks.

Thanks for the update guys. I went to school with Billy last year, would be great to see him run out on the 'G against my boys as his first game, so fingers crossed.

Not happy with the Drummond news though, was close to my favourite player outside the dees a couple of years ago. Shame to see him being constantly injured.
