We've not traded out of drafts though. Took a first and second rounder last year. Unless your criticisms go back pre 2023 (even then we hit the draft quite hard), in which case they are dismissed by the flag.

If you're on board with trading for Houston I'm not sure what your criticisms are. Is it only Schultz? Where we traded for a 24-25 year old who'll play with Nick for 7+ years. It's the Houston deal that will see us trade out of this/next draft for an older player. We traded our pick for Schultz but can get it back if we don't trade for Houston.

Had we not traded for Schultz I'm sure we'd be putting our first round and F1 on the table for Houston anyway, having the younger Schultz as well is a better outcome.

I thought you were pushing for an alternative list building approach, ie. that we should have cut older players and tanked for a couple of years to hit the draft. It seems like your fine with the approach we're taking, hitting the draft as well as trading and FA, you just disagree with one or two moves.
I guess you could say that last line is true, and I don't like the consensus spoken in here re trading vs drafting a team long term.
I'm hoping Flys comments were limited to this year and not perpetually looking to trade out.
Also you do realise Schultz was 26yo (is 27 next month), not 24-25, not against him coming in only the "desperation" cost to acquire of it (which has been doen ro death).

Over paying in direct trades imo eventually leads to an overall weakening of the list.

2 for 1 or even 3 for 1.
Trading out of future drafts also has hurt us, its made the gamble not only on a player but on an entire years results and draft horde.

We are hitting the draft in years where our first picks are high teens early 20s, and have lost picks in years we have high end picks. Save for FS saving us.

When I look at the talent coming through I just don't feel, that theres enough of it going to be that real upper end talent at AFL level.

I guess the language being spoken is we are looking to try do it regularly moving forward.

We have also wasted opportunities in past with over paying trades, trading out future picks early and receiving unders etc.
Overall weakening our draft hands in those years.
Absolutely agree that whenever we've traded out (ie Grundy, Treloar, Stephenson, Henry) or in (Beams, Schultz) big name players in recent times we've been reamed. I'd argue that Schultz wasn't even a big name and we somehow traded for him like he's Houston. We've done very well with the moneyball trades.

This trade period is hopefully different as it sounds like Leppa might actually push hard on our trade bait players like Noble/Richards. If we can turn F1, Noble, Richards into Houston, we've definitely ended up on the right side of the trade equation this time.

All the journos are conveniently ignoring the fact our future first is up for grabs because of McGuane.
They are also forgetting that we got Nick Daicos and he is only 21.

We have drafted in the first round seven times in the last six drafts, including 2023 (HDM), 2022 (Allan), 2021 (Daicos), 2020 (Henry, Macrae, McInnes), and 2018 (Quaynor). If McGuane keeps tracking the way he has been we may still draft in the first round in 2025 even if we get Houston. What more do they want?

2019 was the only year we did not, which was admittedly bad because of the disastrous Beams trade. But you can also top up on young talent via trade, as Geelong did with Henry, and we did bringing in the (then 22-year-old) Bobby Hill and the (then 23-year-old). And trading for experienced players like Perryman and Houston is actually a good way to avoid a leadership vacuum after Pendles, Steele and co retire.

We don't need to get caught up in this moral panic.

I'm not sure if this contradicts his own reporting this morning or of this is the "Dan Houston wants to play for Carlton AND (or) Collingwood"
It’s kind of a moot point what Carlton are offering for 13 if Cameron, and by extension GC, are true to their word by dealing with Collingwood as the priority* on the basis of wanting to get the Noble trade done. Edmund doing his best nahnah impersonation and attempting to will it into existence. As an extension of all this how does the Noble trade get done if GC move 13 elsewhere?

*paraphrasing because I can’t remember the exact wording.

That Carlton offer has the potential to be really poor, especially with all the academy picks next year.
Even if it’s accepted and Carlton end up with 13, how do they get Houston. They still only have 1 first round pick available for trade. They need to use this years 2nd to trade into next year because they must have a 1st or 2nd next year.

If Pies get it they will have 13 plus Joey as a starting point.

Need Leppa to walk in there and remind GCS that we've never poached a single one of their players other than Henry Schade!

Meanwhile they've had Josh Fraser, Danny Stanley, Sam Iles, Jarrod Witts and soon to be JFN.

Not to mention the complete charity that was that Witts trade.

Houston playing this smart.

If he nominates a club that can usually piss everyone off.

Let them work it out behind the scenes.
