Yeah, but I don't include parker in the 6 Cat A list spots. Given not anyone can be put on that list.
max senior 36-38, catA rooks 6, catB rooks 2

total squad max 44

ie. can have up to /max of 6 catA and 2 catB but don't need to carry that many

The narrative that we’re ’all in’ for the short term and that we should towards the future instead is absurd. It’s never all black or all white but what would they have us do instead?

Go with a Richmond style fire sale for top picks? We’d have to put Jordy and Moore on the table to get us anywhere near that haul as our oldies are not going for first rounders. And then what? Have Nick waste 5y of his career running with a bunch of 18yo? Not to mention that had we done this exact strategy in 2020, we would have essentially missed out on a flag.

Or are they saying we should have kept our picks and cap and not look to improve our list with Schultz, Houston, Perryman and maybe Membrey/Tomlinson? Why would we not improve the current best 23 when we’re just 12m away from a flag and after a year we all feel was wasted opportunity.

It really makes no sense at all. Worst case we go downhill fast and none of our current youngsters come on and all that means is we miss out on top pick next year (who cares though because McGuane) and linger at the bottom as we rebuild. It just delays a rebuild by a year or two. That’s nothing against the chance at pinching a flag in the next 2-3y.

We can get as many top picks as we want by being complete shithouse after this strategy doesn’t deliver. Not that I think any of this will happen, we’ll keep being somewhat competitive, top up with free agents and build around Nick for the next 10y.

actually i think melbourne has a good blend
often you see a few young high quality draftees can be good role players in a flag side
we had it with pendles and sidey
brisbane had a few this year
melbourne do so many things terribly as a footy club, but i actually think thier list management is pretty good
(with the exception of giving up james jordan - thought that was a mistake at the time)
As I posted in the Graham Wright thread, both Melbourne's and Carlton's issues owe a lot to their coaching personnel.

Melbourne has the added instability of Oliver and certain off-field machinations at board level, however these weren't seen as insurmountable as they appear to be now when they were winning consistently.

Hi folks. I have Charlie Dean in a keeper league and I'm wondering what's happening with him regarding a contract.
He qualified for another year on the rookie list because he's played less than 10 games, so that saved him - Probably wouldn't have made it if he'd had to be promoted to the senior list.

Any word on Reef there Jen?
Nothing yet. I'm assuming it comes soon, him, dean and long.
Otherwise all three would have been delisted too.

And funny enough, all three were training together last week with Max Viney

I'd do that with him rather than Reef, because Reef has a touch more of a chance to make it - so you don't want him to come on and then be a UFA down the track. A small risk.

The small risk would have probably left us too short on trade capital to recruit Houston if we had have taken it with Richards last year like many of us suggested.

You'd only do it for the ones who want to delist but are keeping due to a contract - rather than the ones like Reef that you're choosing to keep.

It wouldn't have changed anything about Richards' year if we had delisted him and put him on the rookie list last year.

Can't believe we kept Long.
We picked him up in the mid-season draft and he played 7 AFL games for us, and he missed several weeks with injury. He was basically in our best 22 from the time we picked him up.

I'm not saying he will be in 2025, but it's probably a good enough performance to warrant another year on the rookie list on minimum salary, essentially.

If Jack Carroll gets delisted he could be someone to look at as a train on if he wants to stay in Melbourne. With so much uncertainty with our younger midfield he might be better than Macrae, Long, Sullivan.

the last 2 off seasons Oliver has made noises about leaving and Melbourne have caved in.

Oliver can do what he wants because Melbourne wont rip the band aid off.

He would have been a delisted free agent. Once you've been delisted once, you've got FA status whenever out of contract and Port would have just signed him rather than having to pay a trade price for him.vHe wouldn't have been funds for us in the trade.
