Albury, wang, Yarra and lavi are the only 4 senior sides to play in the grand final since 2007. And the last team before that was north (07). 4 teams in 15 years and it will continue to grow unfortunately.

Yes the competition it’s great at the top level but the drop off is like no other league.

Could nearly say that the Hume and talangatta league teams 95% of them would of atleast played in a grand final in that time

Yep, when people talk about the "great standard" of the O&M they are talking about 3 or 4 clubs for the most part. Would have to be one of the most top heavy leagues going around at the moment

You’re including Albury in this when they were buying the premierships which prompted the restrictions to salary caps and points. So if you were to go from say 2015. There has been 4 clubs play off in the grand final in six seasons. Not including Covid years. Plus you also had both Cresswell coached sides just miss out on a grand final birth and Myrt have been close too. If they were successful you would’ve had 7/10 teams play off in grand finals since then. Hardly a dominance of the league really. I know it’s hard to for a couple of clubs right now but unfortunately it’s up to them to turn it around and find a way to get sustained success. Albury beat Wangaratta by a combined total of 133 points in 2015 and Wang missed finals. 2 years later they knocked them off in a GF. It can happen

That’s an amazing stat. Not healthy.

Did Wang have their best players poached from within the league at the start of 2016?

Last year the ovens and Murray was probably the tightest league in the state, maybe Geelong, but when corowa were at full strength, Lavington and Wodonga, would have all played finals in any other country league in the state bar Geelong. But it's less points for clubs to raid a weaker clubs best players than get a ayer from another major league or vfl.

If Raiders had Muller this year, they'd be pushing for fifth, with their other recruits, you add the players lost within the league by myrtleford and corowa back and they'd both be far more competitive for 2023.

How do you recruit, when potential recruits see your best players leave and go to another club in the same league?

Will the corowa clubs survive? 250k damage to the club rooms, not sure about their neighbouring clubs if they got damaged, but maybe it's time 3 clubs become 1

I don't think Raiders would have been pushing for Finals even with Muller they've lost a couple of there good young players as well.

No they didn’t. But Wang relied heavily on local players to turn the club into the success it currently is today.
Get your culture right and the rest should follow.
What’s happening at Corowa with the floods right now is a tragedy, no doubt. Surely a new coach would still sign if there was flooding in November? Got to be more to it doesn’t there?
Agree that poaching of opposition best players has to be limited, I agree with that.
Good luck telling clubs to fold and merge because they have had a few bad years. Forget their entire history the previous 50+ odd years prior to that

The whole town will suffer at Xmas , with Caravan Parks , probably no boating and even the golf course has 18 holes out . Tourism will be right down which will affect everyone.

What’s your point? Just make the club fold and give up? I’m pretty sure everyone agrees the situation is horrendous. Just hope they receive some luck and can turn it around. I’ll personally be up there over Christmas at the caravan park.

Ball Park ? . My point is that the town will suffer and that means sponsors for the footy club

Agree with the sentiments about the sameness of the competition. Like many leagues the same clubs dominate each year which becomes predictable and boring for those non affiliated followers. The “haves” and “have nots” are alive and well in the competition and this will continue. Whilst those will say the standard is fantastic, this is only at the top as the lesser teams continue to battle away and try and remain somewhat competitive.

This isn’t going to change for some time and the gulf will continue to widen. For example footy in and around Wodonga is in a world of pain and will continue to be the case unless something changes. Unfortunately administrators spend way too much time listening to the agendas of the strong clubs and afraid of making difficult decisions in the hope of trying to make the competition somewhat more competitive.

River Gum. Don’t think it was harmed anywhere as bad as Ball Park was. Hopefully there’s a few dry weeks ahead and some sun shines to get the city folk doing their usual escapes over the holidays

Really great article in the border mail about corowa

I wish i could open it . Anyway to put it up please
I'll give it a crack, but basically says they're happy if their juniors go off and try vfl footy or move away and play in Melbourne for footy, but aren't really impressed with the stronger clubs within the league with better outside resources raiding them when they're already losing players moving away and going after them when they know the clubs in a weak spot.

Also they have said it's not through lack of effort and man hours to get a coach, it's a hard caper to lure the right coach that understands how a community club operates and develops their local players not just a coach

Thoughts on this for an idea?
All Ovens and Murray football and netball clubs to be part of a two day preseason round robin event at John Foord oval. Saturday and Sunday.
Have some shortened practice matches rotating against each other.
Function in the rooms, if available, on the Saturday night. I’m sure most clubs could use their connections to get some decent guest speakers involved.
All proceeds go to Corowa to help pay for the damage caused by the floods.
Would also bring some money to the local community with some players and supporters staying in town on the Saturday night.

wow what a mess the O&M is becoming ,,, not just the Corowas, Hoppers, Myrtleford Raiders, but clubs battling to field reserve grade sides on game day .
To many clubs in the region be it the minor leagues drawing players ,
