Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

our expectations of dow is more than what we expect from
Other players , if Dow is not better than Carroll or newnes than duck me those 2 are young or pathetic
It's not what he can do - he's very good in centre bounce, it's what he can't do around the ground. Think of Sexton at GC, is a great kick at goal but doesn't apply F50 pressure and will probably be moved on this year.

Team high pressure acts (22) in just 65% game time. Next best were Cerra (19 in 82% game time), Owies (18 in 89% game time), cripps (17 in 87% game time).

Curious as to what people make of this? Is the 'jogging' around field an issue with pacing at contests rather than fitness? - would love to see what his GPS numbers are

Completely different roles and positions.

Dow does nothing outside of the contest, provides nothing in link up play, and no two way running. The only position he can play Kennedy is far better at.

Carroll didn’t have a great game today, and I expect he will get dropped as well, but he isn’t in the same boat as Dow who has the same flaws 5 years in.

Newnes may not be great, decent and serviceable but has far greater versatility so plays more games. It’s inside mid of bust for Dow.

yup saw that in the other thread - goes back to the original question - 65% time on ground, team high pressure stats but seemingly only covering a small area of the ground.

Is this a pacing issue whilst he is at the contest? (and therefore not having any petrol tickets left for the spread) - or is there another explanation?

no idea and i feel like I'm burying the guy, I don't want to, i would love for him to be a valuable team player.

my biggest concern from the heat map is where his opponent was. Cripps isn't a great defensive runner (although better this season) and we can't expect players to cover for two mids defensively.

Where exactly did you get the Telstra tracker charts from?

It’d Worth looking at our other mids apart from Walsh who is a bit of freak how much he runs.

in the afl app, you go into match centre, then players (where the stats are) then click on the players name

All I know is that SOS stuffed up big time in taking Dow instead of Cerra. I think it’s in everyone’s interests to move Dow on. So what if he ends being better at another club. That will just mean he wasn’t suited to us.

Of course there is no guarantee he will do better elsewhere. Just look at SPS at West Coast.

Dow does win his own ball unlike SPS so he'd go alright at another club, North would love him

I havent written him off yet but its obvious he is fair down the pecking order as a carlton mid.

I think that if North came knocking offering him a starting spot in their midfield, he might be seriously tempted to take it. They could build their midfield around him extracting the ball for them.

More broadly on Dow, I think him and his manager should really be looking at a club that could put his seemingly narrow skill set to better use and given expectation that players need to be "multi faceted" these days that will limit his suitors.

Getting the ball to start with is a valuable skill, bursting from a stoppage with the ball is also handy and I have seen him deliver well by foot but it pretty much ends there.

If he wants meaningful time at senior level I don't think it will be with us.
