Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

gotta be more than that.......

I would aim for a late 2nd but it will depend on a potential club's desire. Is ready to slot straight in to whomever wants him.

I would take him as a first touch extractor: ie 'your job in my midfield is to be at every stoppage while on the ground and get first hands on it then don't chase find an oppo mid and stick to him until the next stoppage"

This is why he ain't getting a game, we already have enough of those guys.

I'm sure Voss told Paddy the same thing he told Kennedy in the pre season.

25-35

Anything worse than that we keep him. Even if it means the following year we get sfa for him.
Given SPS went at 53 i suspect it is unlikely Dow would go any earlier. Looks like we will be keeping him.

It says more about Walsh than it does about Dow, to be fair.

It does.

Looking at the heat map for every other player, there is nothing poor about Dow's. Walsh is far and away above every other player, including Cottrell who you would think would have run a groove between defence and attack on his side of the ground.

Curiously Cerra's was mostly on the left side of the ground. Were we playing that side or was Collingwood playing that side?

It's gotten to the point whereby when he's given a crack at playing in the seniors he appears to put so much stress on himself, he loses all instinct and gets completely lost and bereft of confidence (will I screw this up etc). He appears to be a lovely young man, good citizen and loyal, I want him to have some success but don't think it'll be with us. North, Richmond, and * might be destinations he could look at.

Voss would have likely told him to just go out and play his role but reducing the pressure on him now is virtually impossible.

The only way to take that pressure off him is for Voss to say "I am going to give you 4 games to see what you can bring to the side".

Not wanting to make a single mistake for fear of being dropped can be mentally crippling.

For a first up effort for the season Paddy’s game yesterday was fine. 21 possies, 5 clearances and 5 tackles playing as fifth banana was solid. He’s pushing uphill in terms of competition for a place in the team. A fit Kennedy makes him 6th banana and out of the team. It’s the harsh reality of a stronger list.

Given the coach's comment post game I'm thinking it was more about what he was doing without the ball that didn't impress so much.

Where exactly did you get the Telstra tracker charts from?

It’d Worth looking at our other mids apart from Walsh who is a bit of freak how much he runs.

in the afl app, you go into match centre, then players (where the stats are) then click on the players name

Heatmaps are generated based on possessions, not where they run though, given proportionately does possessions are mostly at the Centre that’s where his heat shows up the most. Heat map will vary depending on the role, position and number of touches a player gets.
Next evolution of this data point would be actual movement data, but doubt they’re letting that out hey.

Ok got it, cheers.

So possession locations are indicated by the dots.

And the possesion number density in a region is indicated by red shading for high numbers, yellow for middle range numbers and green for low numbers.

Not for free anyway

Heatmap doesn't tell you much. It shows where a player got their possession, not where they spent most of their time.

Exactly. I mean there would be a relationship most of the time between time spent and possessions but that’s a different convo 😂

Probably the best they can do as pretty sure the clubs don't even get access to opposition player movement data.

Being at the game today, it's noticeable Dow jogs after opponents. Compare that to walshy, durdin, owies, even cotrell, all sprint like maniacs, like there life depends on chasing them down. Dow just doesn't have that desperation in his defensive running.
I don’t recall the player but he was just cruising behind a player for a few seconds before he actually put some effort into actually chasing him properly and made up some significant ground in nearly running him down…
I’ll have to watch the replay and try and spot it…

Now this is the very thing that many of us are dumbfounded by with the lack of urgency in hunting chasing and running down opposition in the manner required strait away…

It’s a lazy habit and mindset that’s been going on way to long, he can do it he’s just refusing to push himself into making it a nonnegotiable…

He has also lost the ability to run with the ball more, whether it’s instructions or how he now is developed to play, he’s not creating and covering more ground, he’s game has become far to much reliant with handball…

I thought he was pretty solid in his first game back, considering how much we were outplayed for much of the match…

I’m not advocating that we should get rid of Paddy, call it stubborn but i think that we can still develop him into a best22 player providing he meets a few of the requirements he’s game must meet, it will be challenging its all on him…

But
If he and the club came to the understanding that for the betterment of both parties, that they could both benefit from, could we find a youngish player in maybe a direct trade swap that suits our needs list wise…

Might be a much better outcome with a player also with some years of development under his belt but stuck behindplayers looking for a better opportunity in a position we are crying out for, than a draft pick that probably might not reflect true value…

Hopefully he can get his shit together..
