This is probably a stupid question, but if Broughton is unsuccessful and gets the 1 week ban, do the carry over points for future reports get wiped?

FREMANTLE defender Greg Broughton will face the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night to challenge his rough contact charge over his collision with Gold Coast's David Swallow.

The match review panel offered Broughton a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea for a level one offence in the second quarter of Saturday night's match at Metricon Stadium.

Broughton slid into Swallow's legs while trying to gather the ball.

He risks a one-match suspension if his challenge is unsuccessful.

Well done to the club and Greg for challenging this bullshit charge. It's common sense.

I reckon he won't get off.

He should get off, but agree, I have a nagging feeling that even though it's the least dangerous of the 3 that ghave been up, they'll stamp their authority on it and make an example of him.

Still think they should challenge it because it's a crock to be frank

this whole case is riding on the back of a 'memo' sent to the clubs by the afl...Just ridiculous that over two rounds they can change their interpretation of events based on one freak accident and a 'memo'... If a 'memo' is not legislated it can not be used in a rule of law case...

Not Guilty...

Precedent set by MRP to bring up players for the sliding into player. They are now in 'darned if they do, darned if they don't' scenario - they have to charge players sliding, regardless of the absurdity of it.
  • Fact Thomas got off bodes well for Broughts
  • Fact players are still sliding in legs first means MRP may step up message to League - making Broughts the fallguy

The idea that the MRP is there to look at vision or review reports is good. What I do not like is the pressure it places on club and player to contest - to prove there was no malice etc... surely that comes across in the vision!

If the League wants to tweak gameplay it should not be done via MRP.

.

I still don't know what the alternative is. Was Broughts supposed to go head first instead and risk getting a knee or a boot to the face? Seems to me he was trying to protect himself while he picked up the ball.

I'd hate to see the situation where the MRP force players to go into a contest unprotected. We need to face the reality that the ball is often on the ground, and is often contested on the ground, players have to get down low to pick it up.

He only carries over the 'left over' points so to speak.

He doesn't appeal and accepts ban = 95 odd carry over points, but doesn't get the week off.

He appeals looses, ends up with 125 points, 100 goes towards the one week ban, the 25 are carried over.

I know I've not got those numbers exactly right, they're just a rough estimate, but you get the idea.

As for the appeal - no doubt we should do it on principle, but acting on principle often costs you. Seems obvious to me he should get off, but what is obvious to the rest of humanity seems to elude the tribunal system at times.

Yeah, it's a strange one

When going for the ball there are basically two options:

1) Protect yourself and risk taking out an opponent and fronting the MRP

or

2) Don't protect yourself and risk being hurt/injured and your opponent facing the MRP

The AFL don't even care if you win the ball anyone, which is BS, because most other sports will factor that in - i.e. in soccer if you cruch someone, but win the ball first in a tackle situation, it's usually play on

I'm completely against him being suspended, I think he got there well before Swallow did, and in comparison well before Thomas was with Rohan.

But he will be suspended, if the clubs were sent a memo post Thomas/Rohan he will be suspended.

The thing that's going to vex me, is this incident will happen 20 times more this season and I know this punishment will rarely be dished out.

Absolute joke if he goes - Swallow had plenty of time to realise Broughton was sliding to protect the ball and kept moving in on him anyway.

For Broughton to go in any other way would have been dangerous for him physically and costly for the team if he'd fumbled.

Looking for a positive:

If we lose the challenge, GB will only miss Port. Alternative is to have the carry overs and get rubbed out down the track when we'd probably need him more.

Anyone know when the tribunal hearing and decision are?

Is anyone else getting tired of the AFL removing as much contact as possible from the game? Surely they need to stop, it's getting to the point I'd rather watch the Dockers play in the WAFL under some real rules.

This is correct, but if he is convicted then it affects his ability to plead guilty and get reduced points should any other incident occur. So not only are we trying to get him off but also to keep his record clean.

Usually have the LIVE Now (chat) operating on the AFL.com.au website at 5pm EST so can follow the tribunal... as just the one contest may or may not be up.

So best just head over to afl website at 3pm WST and see if they will have proceeds and verdict live.

EDIT: Believe they just posted scheduled time 6:30pm EST

Even the field umpire paid a free kick to Broughts on Saturday, not the other way round.

Glad we're challenging, but nervous that MRP will make an example of this sort of issue at my buddies expense.....
