Paul Roos - not the messiah

SEN absolutely caned Melbourne management this morning. Roos and the CEO have blamed the fans for the negative stink that the club is mired in.

Given that the AFL planted both Roos and the CEO at the club, it now appears that those very people have declared war on Melbourne supporters!
Sounds like Hird's "propaganda" speech.

It is becoming increasingly obvious now that Roos took on the Melbourne job primarily to enhance his own personal brand (and to collect a huge wad of cash) rather than any holistic desire to improve the club long-term.

In many ways the Melbourne coaching gig post-Neeld was the perfect vehicle for 'Brand Roos' - the all-knowing Sydney saviour and self-proclaimed coaching genius strides into Melbourne to clean up the mess left behind by Neeld/Bailey, their improvement can then be directly attributed to his arrival, he places a strict 3 year limit on his time there so he doesn't have to fully invest in the job, and then any improvements after he leaves can be linked to "all the ground work done by Roos". And with the plethora of elite young talent the club has stock-piled, together with the strong off-field leadership team, it was quite easy to predict significant improvement from the nadir of 2013. Unfortunately for Roos, the fly in the ointment has been the very slow progress of the improvement, so 'Brand Roos' has been forced to continually revert back to the narrative of how difficult it has been to breakdown the sins of the past to justify the lack of real improvement made under his watch. Rightly so, the Melbourne supporters (and now the senior off-field leaders) are sick and tired of this narrative being constantly pushed by Roos whenever they suffer a terrible loss (funnily enough the 'bad history' narrative is never trotted out after a strong win).

The Melbourne supporters, who have stuck fat over an extended period of sustained on and off-field ineptitude, deserve so much more from a senior coach on $1.5m a year than what Roos has given them IMO. Coaching an AFL team is an honour and a privilege for the coach - in Roos' mind the honour and privilege lies with Melbourne for having Roos coaching them.

Roos is a fraud

Shocking comments from Roos. For goodness sake you get paid a million a year to run that rabble. The loyal members who turn up weekly should demand an apology. They are the backbone of that club, not an overpaid mercenary.

Roos said the club as a whole.

It was Peter Jackson who attributed to the fans.

Either way I'd be pissed as a Demons supporter

Blaming the fans? Roos should immediately resign and hand over the reigns to Goodwin for 2016, he is out of date and out of touch. One only has to look at the 7 draft selections from 2008 and 2009 to know the seeds of Melbourne's woes in 2105. Good grief, they had 4 top 20 selections in 2009 and still missed Nathan Fyfe!

Why are people so concerned that Roos is a fraud and not invested long-term at the club? The whole reason he was appointed was to sort us out for the next person to take over. You throw a rookie coach into that environment and they get decimated.

Roos has made some questionable decisions but there's some revisionism going on in here with people seemingly thinking he was meant to be our next premiership coach.

To be fair it was John Ralph who has no ****ing clue

I don't think anyone expected him to be the next premiership coach. So far he has repeatedly blamed the previous poor environment for the teams results. Now he is blaming the supporters for the negativity around the club. This, despite him actually saying that the club had a stench of negativity there.

He is the coach, he is the bloke who should be leading this group of men and getting rid of the negativity, yet seems to be constantly focusing on the past.

Surely his job is to ignore the past and focus purely on the future

I feel for Melbourne fans, I'm not yet convinced he is actually leading you towards anything. You've made slight improvement, well so you bloody well should considering that you are bringing in better players and the kids are maturing. That's not coaching, that's natural development and common sense.

Mate, if you are happy with him, all power too you. I just feel that if I was in your position, I would be feeling a little short changed for what this bloke is being paid.

So the club's malaise is the fault of the diehard members that pay his salary despite the rubbish that they've been served up in the past 10 years. The people that actually put their hands in their own pockets who had every right to turn their back on the club but have shown loyalty through a dreadful period in the club's history. Get stuffed.

Yeah pretty much. Roos and co acting like a bunch of spoiled brats with entitlement issues.

No different to Terry Wallace, living in the memory of his coaching genius and still trying to spin his way out of his club's performance. Why Melbourne ever thought the players would embrace a coach that was only ever in it for himself and his bank balance is beyond me, he is probably the only coach in history that has put a timeline on his tenure.

Also never strikes me like he talks about Melbourne like they are his club; it is like he thinks he is above coaching Melbourne.

This picture in the age seemed bizarrely familiar. See what you think.

I think 7 wins was their target for this year, so well done. 2016 target - finals. Big test. I can't see the Roos project being value for money. But they have improved, but so have other teams more quickly. I never like pre-ordaining positions so many years out. Often ends in tears. Roos Longmire though seemed to work. I'll reserve further judgment.

I would like to see consistency next year (no more or only a few blowouts), general skill improvements, higher scoring, and anything over 7 wins would be acceptable to me.

I see 2017 as our year of pushing for finals, which will be Goodwins first year.

That is all I want from Paul Roos, a winning culture and an AFL level playing list.

Looks like its as bumpy a road as he predicted, but we're moving in the right direction.

Won't bring miracles, but is doing exactly what we paid him for at this stage.

Thrilled with a 13th place finish, after the last couple of years...
