Pavlich off the boil

There has to be something wrong with him physically. At least that would be some kind of excuse for his really mediocre performances over the last however many weeks. I can't even remember when he played the sort of game we know he is capable of. We rely on him to have big games, we have ZERO chance of beating the top sides unless Pav comes to the party (e.g. like the Geelong game).

I don't recall him even winning one clearance from the middle today, and he put himself in there quite a lot. Couldn't touch it at a stoppage ... Dunn was all over him and he couldn't muster the energy to break free.

Yep, been well off the boil.

A few years ago he was in the top 5 contested marks in the league for several years straight. Can't seem to take many contested marks these days. Falling over a lot in contests. Not the same player he was once it hits the ground - FFS he was beaten by a ruckman (Johnson) for a loose ball.

Hate to say it but age may be catching up with the champ.

What is wrong with him. No point in him putting himself in the middle because he isnt getting near it.

Pav's stats this game

16 disposals
50% disposal efficiency
0 goals 3 behinds
0 clearances
6 clangers (most on ground)

The good:
7 inside 50s (equal most)

If his name was Adam McPhee he'd be getting boos from the crowd with that effort.

You can forgive an off game or two. This has been going on for over a month. What's up?

Either injury or his fitness is letting him down. Looks like he can't get out of first gear.

Only plus I see is we've got time for him to get into form for the finals, where he can win a game on his own.

i agree he's off the boi by his high standards but he still would have been in our top half dozen payers today
havn't done my votes yet but he may get 1

If he is injured, but can still sort of play, it puts us in a hard position. Do we bite the bullet and give him a few weeks off? With the small impact he is having currently ... how badly would it effect the team? There are no easy games in this comp, so there are no games you can pick out where you'd be confident to win without him, but I wonder if we should just give him a rest anyway.

Hmm thought he had a back related problem since the Saints game?

Maybe when we get Tarrant and Mayne back we can give him a break before finals...

Having said that, the mid season break wasn't long ago and the week off didn't help his form...

Pre-Saints ave 3.33 goals a game.
Post Saints ave 1 goal a game. (won 3/4 games)

Niggling Achilles injury. Doesn't need WAFL, needs a rest. They play him because he drags a decent defender.Even Pav at 50% is worth it.

I was watching him in the pre game warm up.

Scott was rolling the ball along the ground to pav, he threw 5 and each one pavlich bent down and fumbled. EVERY single one.

Then Pav picked the fifth one up and walked away from Scott, no words said just a glance.

To me this seemed unusual, it was like they were both aware of why this was happening.

To me all his issues (below pav standard performances) are stemming from him not having clean hands, he seems to take all of his grabs on the chest where possible.

I love the bloke so absolutley no knocks on him from me.

Further to that, after the game as Harves walked past Pav it looked like he turned to him and asked "You ok?" I got a similar sort of impression from that - like they both new exactly what he was talking about.

I'm almost positive he's carrying something. His loss of form has been too sudden and too pronounced to be just age catching up on him. Earlier in the season he was absolutely on fire and was being talked about as one of the top couple of players in the comp on form. Old age doesn't suddenly catch up on you in the week between R12 and R13.

I suspect if we manage to sew top 4 up before the final round (looking very unlikely though) Pav will be given a rest before the finals.

Yeah, I saw that too.

Was quite pleased with how he kept them on the ground afterwards to give them a talking to though.

If he is carrying something, then I think this is close to the mark. Though he couldn't hit the side of a barn from 2 ft today, Kepler is generally doing a good job as a fwd, MJ is playing mostly spare man in def, but with Taz back can become another fwd option as he was doing quite well before the holiday and, most important, Mayne back provides a lead-up fwd who can push to the middle and provides an upgrade in defensive pressure. As soon as both or even one of Mayne and Taz is back then Pav has got to have rest if it's going to help him come up to form for the finals.

Today I reckon he tried pretty hard, often.

I also reckon he had today and has been having, a run of unusual ball happenings (mumbo jumbo).
Add the mumbo jumbo, a bit of poor form and you get a quantum affect. Give a few good deliveries and few lucky bounces his class will re appear.

Good players like him need just that little bit of luck to fully make use of his talent.

Dugrene, i know what you're saying re needing a bit of luck to get on a roll but gee whiz in today's game he was 35m out directly in front after taking a trademark chest mark, and just shanked it by his standards. i also recall him taking a mark 55m out today - earlier in the year he would have had the confidence to boom it between the big ones mid way up the post. if we're any chance to do anything in the finals, we need him back in that kind of form.

I know we aren't entrenched in the eight yet, and unfortunately we play the 5 teams just under us, but it could be a case of seeing where we are at the end of round 17 and choosing a game to rest anyone that needs it. The Hawthorn game would be ideal (Saints did it last year and still won), but then again that might be a position deciding game.

We are definitely in the 8, but not the 4. I'd be tempted to put Pav on the sidelines until he is fit. My biggest concern would be doing more damage to his long term fitness if we keep playing him when he is carrying something. Also, this year it is very unlikely we will pinch a flag. If we rest Pav and drop back to 6th or 7th, then give a few teams a scare with a fully fit side, that would be better than playing Pav injured and limping into the final four and making a quick exit, as well as maybe losing one or two quality seasons off Pav's career.
