Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium)

there have been groups have whinged about, the money can be better spent, eg hospitals etc
people will whinge about the new stadium, then once built think its the greatest thing since electricity!

Some people will always whinge. But I don''t think it goes along party political lines in this case.

By the way, the track and signalling improvements will benefit normal peak hour services on a daily basis as well as when the stadium is in operation. So there is some positive side-effect.

As I pointed out before, they are ahead of schedule, so they are already way ahead of Rio.

Do you think they can just click their fingers and it'll all be done?

If they had done this 6 years ago

I have never seen a process to build a stadium take so long

I worked for department of sport and rec 7 years ago

They were planning it then ......it's taken 9 years to Plan ....I have met the blokes on these planning committee and I wouldn't want to go to war with these blokes put it that way

Omfg .......just build it.

It's not that hard

most places are dead now days. not many people go out now days compared to 3 or 4 years ago, regardless of where you are in Australia

leederville, mt lawley and vic park have taken up the slack

cheaper rents means cheaper food

So nobody goes to Subi's bars and restaurants when there's no footy on, right? And of course nobody goes to Mt Lawley and Vic Park because there's no reason for anyone to go there to begin with

How is Subi comparable with building a new business at Burswood? Businesses anywhere that top up on the 30 odd events are not comparable with a new business at Burswood looking to capitalise on 30 crowds.

i heard the new stadium design has very little parking spaces, trying to capitalise the public transport. where is it in burswood exactly? the burswood casino/dome anywhere near the proposedsite?

Anyone that actually goes out to the entertainment districts (feel like these words fit the best), know that they're undergoing a bit of renaissance particularly as Perth is finally waking up to the fact that due to deplorable service across the board... restaurants will blow people away if you do actually put in that world class effort. As in basically, everything new Perth has been producing lately in the sense of Hospitality has been good and that's only good for the consumer.

Once the transport for the Burswood area is in place considering the scale it's on, the area will light up fast. Stadium, Casino, nearby parks, the Belmont Park developments(which are substantial mind you and have flown under the radar). Also the hotels which the Crown are planning on, which I believe the '6-star' hotel is not the only one in the works.

Plus not sure if anyone has considered just how damn good the aerial helicopter shot is going to be when they do the city wide shot during a finals series, that in itself should count for something.

What a tediously drawn out infrastructure project this is.

Haven't even released the design :drunk:

Wishful thinking from some people. T20s and some big ODIs will move to the new stadium, but tests cant and wont.

Oh they can and will.

Cricket Australia isn't long going to have England sold out at the WACA just so traditionalists can have a wank.

This 'pitch rule', which doesn't exist outside a Dennis Lillee interview, will be worked with if need be.

I really do hate some of the "should be spent on hospitals" nonsense. It's a reflexive statement, made with no recognition of the enormous sums that have been invested into healthcare infrastructure.

It should be spent on middle aged dinks who live in east perth

They cant and they wont. CA dont choose the test venues. They gives games to the state cricket organisations and they choose the venues, and the WACA will always choose a venue they own outright over a venue they'd have to pay rent on. What's the alternative, gives games to an even worse Bellerive Oval while missing out on what will soon be the 3rd biggest city in Australia? I'm sure Channel 9 will be happy to lose their only prime time test match after paying record amounts for TV rights too.

Cricket Australia, WA government and public pressure will ensure cricket is played at the new stadium when it is built.
The WACA if they refuse to move, will have government funding removed (ie. no funding for any upgrades at the WACA, no funding for cricket programs) as well as any funding from CA removed too. The WA government isn't going to spend the money they are going to spend if its used only 6mths of the year.

Which is why the WACA are looking at working with the WAFC.

The WACA doesnt get any state funding for the ground to begin with. No state money whatsoever.

Maybe not for the ground, but they do rely on state funding. There two Platinum sponsors are health way and alcohol.think.again which are both Government departments, and a Gold sponsor is Department of Sport and Rec.

And since CA and ICC have said the WACA doesn't live up to international standards and needs upgrading, where are they going to get the money from for the upgrade? CA won't fund it when they can move to a state of the art stadium, the Gov won't fund it since they are building a new stadium and unless WACA have a spare few hundred million lying around (which I doubt since the Comm bank were going to foreclose them in 2004 for a $3m debt) they can't fund it either.

Cricket would be much better off at the new ground anyway. Better venue for the players, spectators and the sport.

CA didn't give 'prime time Perth' a Test this year. Nothing happened.
9 werent happy and it wont be happening again. When negotiating for the rights they wanted Perth to replace Brisbane as the first test of the summer and I wouldnt be surprised if they get their way after the WC.

The State government arent going to pull money out of grass roots cricket in a stand off with the WACA. That's just ridiculous.

Why not... when I was living in the NT the federal government pulled all money for roads until the NT government removed open speed limits. The NT is going back to open speed limits now as the accident rate increased with a restricted limit.

Governments can do as they see fit with the money. If they believe WACA is holding the game back by being stubborn and refusing to move to a brand new state of the art stadium, then they can remove any funding they want to.
